I remember the HMNZS Taranaki very well. I was onboard HMAS Diamantina during 1971/72. The Taranaki Berthed Astern of us alongside Victoria Quay in Fremantle. I was on Duty Watch on the Brow as Bosuns' Mate at the time One of the Ships Company got so so drunk ashore, he clambered up the Head Rope and only got as far as the Rat Guard. He came back ashore, came over to the "Tina", and asked the Quartermaster to go over to the Taranaki and say he had been with us. How he got away with that excuse has ALWAYS had me fucked.

While in the US Navy I was on a Destroyer which may as well been a bottle in the water. While underway in the Pacific we got stuck in the tailend of a storm. the ship was actually sideways (almost) but there were footprints on the bulkheads...wild times

"Designed and built for it...". A lesser ship may not have survived. I was on-board a 200 ft, 1,000 tonne supply boat when we got caught in a 100-year-storm. Even though I'm the only crew member to not get sick that night, I was among those who weren't convinced we'd see the next dawn. I've never been on a ship that took that kind of shit-kicking, before or since, and I never want to be. Thankfully, there were no rogue waves about.

You need a coastline nearby for the waves to break along. Otherwise there’s nothing to surf.

Not quite... the 100 tonnes overweight from construction yes, but well within operational weight. It will only really affect the vessel (and sister ship HMNZS Otago) later on in life when the RNZN wishes to do upgrades. Meaning limitations with upgrades due to the weight issue. If they go over the weight the ice belt will be too deep in the water leaving the upper hull unprotected.

The Patrol Force being distinct in capabilities and operational use to the Combat fleet, I expect we'll just see them being used more often in the areas for which they are better equipped, rather than treating the Frigates as a one-fits-all vessel (which they clearly are not).

According to Wikipedia (don't all shout at once) this ship was thought to be unfit for antarctic duties due to being 100 tonnes overweight - seems to be doing alright in this vid though.

He said waves to 10m which is 30 feet. It looks bigger than that to me as well, but you don't really get an accurate perspective from a video.

Hello! I am a 15 year old male in the United States of America. I plan on Enlisting in the New Zealand Naval Services, Air Force or the Army. Please don't ask why, I am tired of the USA's Corruptness and I have strong British roots but found some difficulties to joining them so here I am now :). I have a few questions I'd like to ask. 1. I am in sports, good with academics, and can do 20 pushups in 1 minute, 57 situs in a minute, and run a 8:32 minute mile, I'd be willing to improve as fitnes
