HMS Eagle, originally planned as a battleship for the Chilean Navy named Almirante Cochrane, was converted into an aircraft carrier. Commissioned in 1924, she served in the Mediterranean and the Far East during the interwar period. In World War II, she assisted in hunting German commerce raiders in the Indian Ocean and served primarily in the Mediterranean. On August 11th, 1942, while assisting in Operation Pedestal to supply Malta, she was torpedoed by U-73 and sank, with 160 men lost and 789 survivors. As a disclaimer the map animations shown are not entirely accurate. They are there as a visual aid to help you see where the ship is going.

Hey everyone! I like to be there for the Premieres so I can talk to you all. But I have some other obligations that I must attend to and therefore can't be there. Please stick around to the portion about Operation Pedestal in the back half of the video, as I have footage (courtesy of the Imperial War Museum) of the convoy. I hope you all enjoy this; I apologize for not attending the Premiere.

Interesting thing about the convey in Pedestal is that they only selected freighters that could make 16 kts. That's more than double the speed of the average convoy. But they still got plastered.

My father served aboard Nelson when Eagle left Cape Town. Ultra helped the sinking of Bismarck’s Supply ships which operation was staged so as not to reveal that their Enigma signals were being decoded. He retained photographs of Eagle’s demise having been on the Malta convoys being torpedoed on one. 👍🏻🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

That Dreadnoughtly look of old Eagle, ram bow, vestige embrasures, great rounddown, 2 stax, garnished w/ Hurricanes, has always had me. Her busy career showing what a handful of planes being shuffled around @ 20 knots can do adds 2 her mystique, & her end via U-73's jackpot strike is as poignant as the death of any carrier & crew can B. ❤️

She is believed to be the World's first full-fledged carrier, commissioned for service just one day after HMS 'Hermes', the famous World's first carrier built as such from her keel up. In our Navy the name 'Eagle' is reserved in a way for subs. No wonder - Eagle is our NATIONAL BIRD!🙂♍🇵🇱🇬🇧

1:05)One of the 5 surviving ships of Operation Pedestal was the Us oiler "Ohio". It was pirated when in a limey port. Sturmtruppers boarded the ship. The crew was arrested and held incommunicado. 1:57) 6.5 inch and 14.42 inch guns.

My great grand uncle was a plate rivet aboard the Eagle. We never knew what became of him other than he went down with the ship.

‘Loatringen‘. ‘oa‘: long, closed o like in ‘load‘. ‘th‘ in German is the same as just ‘t‘. I didn‘t understand the name of the other ship (Elfe?).
