December 10th 1941: The ships of Force Z, led by the sole survivor of the Battle of the Denmark Strait, the King George V class Battleship HMS Prince of Wales and the Battlecruiser HMS Repulse set out to hault the Japanese Invasion of Malaysia. Off the cost of the Kuantan, Pahong Malaysia, the task force was attacked by elements of the Imperial Japanese Naval Air Corps 22nd Air Flotilia. By the time the guns fell silent both Prince of Wales and Repulse had plunged into the abyss, with the loss of 327 of Prince of Wales 1,521 crew, and 513 of Repulse's 1,181 crew.
The conclusion to my Bismarck Trilogy

My grandfather was a serving on board HMS Repulse when it got hit. Fortunately he survived, otherwise I would not be here today writing this.... He never once told anyone in our family about this. We found out from another survivor who recognised our family name... May God bless all who sailed on her that dreadful day...

Thank you for this. My Dad, Petty Officer Writer John Marsh was on the Prince of Wales when it went down, 70 years ago this week. He survived as his battle station was three decks down keeping the ship's ledgers, an officer told him to get up on deck with them just as the ship was going down. He managed to jump UP onto the deck of a cruiser in the convoy as the battleship was so low in the water. He was a wonderful man with stories of Churchill and the Bismark. He died in December 1998, aged 80.

Extraordinary to see this film, especially when I know what happened to him. And an absolute bonus to see him looking out at me.

The Brits hardly underestimated the Japanese - they had trained the IJN. The Washington Treaty, which ended the British military alliance with Japan and ended British naval supremacy and exposed Malaya, was to placate the Americans. Phillips was a poor choice of commander, but HMS Indomitable was earmarked for Force Z. Britain was too pressed defending the home island, keeping open the Mediterranean and supporting the USSR. Not a single modern fighter left for Malaya. Force Z - fight or flight

I knew Fred Williams, a Newfoundlander who served in PoW. Many survivors were picked up by the escorts and returned to Singapore. They were still there when Singapore surrendered to the Japanese. Fred was a prisoner of the Japanese until the end of the war as were many of his shipmates. I believe he passed away some twenty years ago in Picton, Ontario.

I am referring to the report of Lt. Cdr. C. W. McMullen, who describes the consequences of the first torpedo. The 1000lb test is mentioned in the amazing book of M. Middlebrook and P. Mahoney "Battleships". The weakness of the bulkheads astern was mentioned by Buckhill report, but I think they already guessed, that the shaft could be a reason why the POW destroyed herself. They suggested to build future BBs with three screws.

The US Navy took advantage of a loophole in the naval treaty, US Battleships had better armor, but the most important fact is that US Battleships were designed to fight at long range, and with the exception of the older ships and the North Carolinas, many could withstand 16in shells. the only chance Bismarck or a Vittorio Veneto would have had against a North Carolina, South Dakota, or Iowa Class ship was to knock out the fire control and radar early in the battle forcing them into close range

Those 840 men include, C in C of Force Z, Sir Thomas Phillips himself. Admiral, after the order of abandon-ship, refused to leave the bridge, chose to die a dignified death, along with POW. According to the surviver, IJN pilots, when the evacuation had started. ceaced firing, waved at them, even encouraged their rescue work. HMS Express, which the rescued on board, safely escaped to allies-controlling area, Singapore. While retreating, IJN spotted her, but saw her off, doing nothing.

KGV class were small but tough. Prince had been through a hell of a lot through its lifetime. A battleship worth remembering. A battleship is a battleship once its batte'ld with a ship. AKA. Bismarck. Then it survived 6 - 9 torpedo's that had 200 kg warheads up to 520 kgs!!!! I know Prince of wales had problems but it and the crew put up one hell of a fight. Same goes for HMS Repulse. They fought with bravery.

No ship should ever be sent out without aircover regardless of the size of the ship. It was decided at the last minute that the carrier needed an overhaul and it was pulled from the operation, leaving the Prince Of Wales and Repulse at the mercy of Japanese aircraft. The drydock could have been flooded and the carrier put to sea, look how fast the USS Yorktown was repaired after the battle of the Coral Sea.

Have also read that after Bismarck lost rudders and Pow was hit on the shaft brackets the admiralty considered a forward auxiliary rudder for Vanguard but it reduced speed in model tests,Malta class aircraft carriers were to have 5 shafts,3 were also considered, carrier Ark Royal did have 3 shafts,Possible best design 3 shafts or 2 well inboard with 2 parallel rudders as in the king Edward class and also the German battlecruisers.

I know you love the KGV class, but we have to see the fact, that this one hit blocked 3 from 7 power plants. Engine room B, boiler room Y and the harbor engine room were flooded instantly and engine room Y ran short of steam. 5 from 8 dynamos stopped production. And most dangerous: the whole stern was without electricity and the crew failed in building energy supply from the working dynamos to astern. I think we have to talk about the design...

adm. The British Navy had many many carriers at their disposal. Planes from these state of the art vessels were used to inflict massive casualties on the Italian and German navies. It was because of these successes that Japan decided to try the same, albeit with older fashioned equipment on Pearl Harbor. The planes used by the British included the Fairey Swordfish, first flown in 1936. This meant the plane was only 5 years' old. A plane first used today in 2004 would be considered quite modern.

2nd. At Ceylon the RAF was able to win the aerial encounters with Japan's best carrier pilots. This loss of so many top Japanese pilots at Ceylon had significant effect. The absence of those experienced crews at the battles of the Coral Sea and Midway, some 2 months later, may well have tipped the balance against the Japanese, turning the tide of war in the Pacific. The Americans were able to sink 4 of those Japanese carriers at Midway with the loss of one carrier, the USS Yorktown.

Max speed for a A6M2 was approx 330mph, a Mk1 Spitfire was around 350mph, & a Mk1 Hurricane was approx 310mph. Armament wise, while the A6M2 did have 2 20mm cannons, the primary weapons were the 2 7.7mm mgs. Because the cannons had a much slower rate of fire, the mgs were used to primarily 'spot' the target before switching to cannons.

The Zero was well known for being extermely agile, and was faster and better armed then the Spitfire and Hurricane, however the Zero sacrificed armor in order to achieve that speed, while the Spitfire and Hurricane were able to take a lot more damage then the Zero. However it ultimatly comes down to how good the pilots were. the Genzan Air Group element that attacked Prince of Wales and Repulse were veterans of the war in China and the Invasion of south east asia

Part 1 ..Part of the reason that POW and Repulse were sunk was that the allies found themselves without their respective modern air forces. Both had one a piece. It had been decided by the allies, reluctantly in the case of Britain, that the British modern airforce would be given to the Russians (Stalin was complaining about allied sincerity) and so it flew off to Russia.

For those who thinks the British were ill equipped to fight the japanese in Malaya are wrong. They were just ill coordinated and shaken from the attacks of Pearl Harbour a few days earlier. The japanese were all speed and surprised attack. Had these two ships survived this battle they would be sunk somewhere else still. Battleships were already an obsolete since the beginning of Ww2. Every battleship is high risk for the crews. A sitting duck for submarines and torpedo planes.

@polygamous1 You're right, when it comes to numerous factors contributing to victory in the war. the Battle of Britain was the first time a major defeat had been inflicted on Germany, El Alamain and Stalingrad were the first major defeats of a German Army in battle, Midway was also the first major defeat of the Japanese in their history and Guadalcanal was the first complete defeat the Japanese had ever suffered, and for the first time people began to see that the Axis could be defeated

a few others you missed, Arizona, Oklahoma, Musashi, Haruna, Ise, and Roma are a few of the BBs sunk by air power in WW2, yes they played a large part but as fire support not much else

Yeah out of all the ship's in the KGV class, she seemed to get the shit end of the stick. Getting pummeled by Bismarck at the Denmark Strait when she wasn't worked up enough, and then Dec. 10th, 1941.

The Japenese must have been absolutely elated at their success.Having previously crippled the US Pacific fleet at Pearl Harbour the sinking of the two British battleships virtually ended Anglo American seapower in the Pacific.Did Japan know what was instore for them.He who sows the seeds reaps the whirlwind.

Yes they knew. Isoroku Yamamoto had discussed with other Admirals that he knew there was no way to win a war with the U.S. because our manufacturing and oil production would keep our nations armed forces supplied. He was hoping the U.S. wouldn't fight but just simply say "just keep what lands you've invaded and leave us alone!" of course he knew there was a big chance the U.S. would fight. So Pearl Harbor was not only to knock out the Pacific Fleet but a diversion to allow the Japanese to "dig in" with their stolen gains before the U.S. had a chance to respond. I think "The Doolittle Raid" morally freaked Japan out.

HMS repulse put up a good fight against the huge wave of torpedo attacks, that the japanese respected the english who them selves left a basket of flower in respect of both their fellow pilots and english crew who bravely defended the battleship

as I recall the Repulse & Prince of Wales were sunk by land based aircraft. Against bombers they may have stood a chance and given the fleet enough time to retire...

@PaladinusPL i've had this agruement before, just how on earth was the british and french suppose to attack the western boarder when they were getting beaten and pushed backwards? The poles had next to no airforce left after the first few days of the war and the luftwaffe had complete airsuperiority so to organise defences is next to immposible when you are being dived bombed by Ju87's and straffed by 109's.

The RAF did stand alone, but it was an umbrella organization made up of many nationalities, not just English. The English only had 3 of the top 10 air aces in the battle. The Commander of the defense of London in the Battle of Britain was a New Zealander.

I think Prince of Wales had the most advanced ship to air AA at the time but it failed due to unforseen problems in the climate out there
