HMS Victory launch Part 1, the Hull

This is part 1 demonstrating the assembly of the model boat HMS Victory Launch, manufactured by Panart Mantua and purchased from Premier Ship Models. This video focuses on the planking of the hull. Part 2 is in work, and when released will focus on building the deck and completing the boat.

Just found your channel Ken, and I must say I am impressed with your work and study of what you are.doing. I think it is great that you are taking the time to document what you are doing no an easy task. Thanks for doing it, can't wait until the next one. I have been looking at this model for a while and the planking is very intense to say the least.

Just watched your video. I think you built Carvel style. The Clinker starts along the keel and each successive plank slightly covers the previous plank up toward the top.

I've not heard that term, so I looked it up. Yep that's what the instructions discussed. Now I know a it more. thanks

What I have been doing on my planking is I taper the edges of each plank and that has all but eliminated the issue with the gaps. It takes some trial and error to figure out how to get them right but I learned this watching how they make real wood boats and they do this to every plank so they are flush. Although on the real boats they do what is called corking where they take something like Hokum and bound it into the seams between each plank. Not sure if that was a universal method and worth some investigation but I want to build as accurate as possible so my next boat I am going to try and find more historical detail about methods used and if the boat did get corking I need to figure out what material and methods to us to recreate that on the model.

Very interesting. I am a slow learner, but if I stay with a thing, I can usually get good. I have been focusing on planking, and I am better, but still lots to learn. I appreciate your advice, and keep it in mind when I get back to studying the model boat building techniques

Note under Fig 3 states (my translation) "before proceeding with the battens, it will be good to pass a little wax on the edges of the frames (excluding m.B) which must be removed once the battens have been completed. This application will make the gluing of the strips on these less tenacious". I would not solely rely on the Mantura supplied translation...

At the time, I could not figure out what wax had to do with anything. I'd never heard of such a thing. With hindsight, I now see the wisdom of following instructions haha! Ken

Good video, Ken. I'm still gathering info before purchasing my first kit and I'm learning so much from you. If it's possible in the future could you list some of the sources you have found helpful? Looking forward to the next video.

Yes, there are many forums and information that I do not know, but when I finish my 3rd boat, I will send what I know.

If you think about it the real boat would not have an exact fit. Indeed the back of the planking fits flush, but the front has acaulking gap. Additionally you nee to edge set the planking to get it to fit well. It is not easy.

If this is your first boat build, I recommend you start simple! this one was my 3rd, and it was not simple for me. Look at the discussion forums on Model Ship world. They have a discussion on Model Kits

Just found Ken's videos and it just happens that I'm starting my second kit which is also the HMS Victory. Just started watching but couldn't help noting Ken's very smart-looking green "cutting board". Had a quick look around to buy one but don't even know what you call it. Help? Thanks - Wes

Yes, I have learned a lot about planking since then. Especially with the NRG half hull planking project (thenrgstore.org). I am still working to improve my skills, so I will look at a victory build as you suggest. - Ken

As stated in the Description of the video, I bought it from Premier Ship Models. But when I looked at their site, they seem to no longer sell it, and a general web search did not find any other sellers either. :-( So I'm sorry, but I cannot tell you where to buy it. Keep looking. Panart Mantua may make another "batch" of kits one day. I am waiting for the Medway Longboat to come back on the market, since it is currently out of stock.

It's called the Keel Klamper, by Amati. I added a steel base with rubber feet for stability.
