HMS Victory - part 23 Copper Plating Begins

In this video i place the final cover piece on the bow and i paint it with a spay gun. Then i mark the water line and i begin the 1st raw of copper plates who is an extremely hard job. This Video comes in 1080p.

John I never thought that copper plating would be one tile at a time. I thought it was a sheet of copper that has the details stamped in it and you would just cut it down to size. You have the patience of a saint and the steady hands of a surgeon. - Mike

Hello my friend!!! It depends ,there are copper strips like you said and they are made of paper and a very very thin foild o copper on top. They are more easy to lay on the hull but i didn't wanted something like that for 2 reasons. 1) they are very easy to destroy them and at the point that they are applied we have a lot of work ahead, months, so to hit the hull to some point is more than certain, and 2) i wanted them to be real copper, like the real thing, looks better, feels better it is better!!! Good morning my friend!!! Thank you very much for your kind words!!! It is a very hard job indeed. I have used around 1000 something pieces for one side. It took me around 18 hours of work but as you have seen the result is absolutely amazing!!! Have a nice weekend too my friend!!!

I know you’ve probably finished by now but next time John you can trim the plates with scissors as well and there’s a gap on the plates where they overlap each other so there’s no exposed wood beneath and it’s made easier to line them up .

Use scissors to cut the plates off the sprue it’s a helluva lot easier…. 😅

She is going to look amazing! What do you suggest? I haven't made my mind yet, i was thinking of some gloss varnish but i believe it's going to shine a lot more than the normal.

Hi John… most excellent work my friend. Could you do a detailed video on wood sealer and varnish?? I am frustrated. I love my yacht varnish. However, I always notice how thick your wood sealer is and I just can’t seem to get the wood sealer figured out. Thanks, Jerry

Thank you very much my friend!!! I use one coat of wood sealer and 2 coats of varnish. In this model i will use an airbrush for the colors and no wood sealer for the hull. I believe i have mad videos for the applying of wood sealer, either in Santisima or Montanes.

She looks great with the copper plates. I shall recommend to wait some time, after all you have a long way until you reach the point of copper plating, and see if Billing Boats makes the extras available :)

Hi Alexandre! Thank you very much!!! I didn't buy them, Billing Boats send me a pack. I have over 3000 pieces but i believe that i will need around 2200 - 2300. I will know of course how many when i finish the copper plating. I believe that they will have them as extra sometime in their site.

Bonjour John, La pose des plaques de cuivre sur la partie inférieure de la coque, va être un travail long et délicat, mais cela va avoir un rendu magnifique. Y-a-il un endroit spécifique pour commencer à poser la 1ere plaque de cuivre ? Combien de plaques de cuivre faut-il poser ? Je vois que pour la proue et la pompe, il va falloir ajuster les plaques de cuivre, ça va être un travail de précision presque d’horloger et avoir beaucoup de patience. C’est la première fois que vous posez des plaques de cuivre, quel est votre sentiment pour ce type de travail ? Bon courage pour la suite et à bientôt. Yves de Lille (Nord de la France)

Hi Yves! I started from top raw in the middle. I found that easy to begin with. I have used 2200 copper plates. This was one of the hardest things i ever done, but the result worth every minute of it!!!
