HMS Whimbrel - The Last of Her Kind

Surviving ships from the 1940s are a rare breed. Most are either museums, shallow water wrecks, or a handful of merchants still chugging along. And, of course, oddities like the Taiwanese submarines.
But, HMS Whimbrel is an interesting case. The last British ship that was present for the surrender of Japan. One of very, very few old British warships left. And a true veteran, at that. Even if her service life was...mostly uneventful.
Does that mean she'll become a museum? Who knows. The British have tried, several times, but the Egyptians have yet to bite. As of now, Whimbrel- or Tariq -remains high and dry in Alexandria. Assuming, of course, she hasn't been scrapped in the couple months since the most recent satellite imagery.

As one of the last surviving Royal Navy ships from WW2, which is still not a museum, Whimbrel's importance for saving is imperative. Sadly, all attempts so far over the last 20 years have hit a brick wall due to the unreasonable price the Egyptian government asks for this old ship. As for Whimbrel itself, the ship has an impressive list of Battle Honors for such a small ship, even more so than HMS Belfast. She was also among the Armada of ships in Tokyo Bay in 1945. I can only hope that the new Cydle Naval Heritage Centre, which is bringing back HMS Ambuscade of Falklands fame, and where Whimbrel was built also, will take interest in this ship and finally give her the treatment she deserves. If she was there as a witness to the surrender ceremony of Japan she deserves to be preserved as a museum ship not many ships survive from that moment in history..

I know Brazil has probably the last monitor in active service, the pre WW2 era Parnaiba. She serves as a costal patrol ship, with a helicopter pad attached.

There was a plan to bring it back to Liverpool battle of the Atlantic but there was a disagreement with Egypt over the price ?

Regarding the most recent image that looks like some level of scrapping is happening towards the stern, I took that image (March 4, 2024) versus the image just before that (May 15, 2023), cleaned it up a bit, and compared both images using a computer graphics program. The algorithm works using a combination of polygon identification from different angles. The washed images matched polygons, which means what we were seeing are just shadows. To be entirely sure, I compared the baseline images as well, and the algorithm matched all polygons (that is, had a match of over 99.3%) except in the last 4 metres of so of the stern. If any scrapping has taken place, it is most likely confined to there. However, a visual look at the shadow cast by the ship just to Tariq's stern in March 2024 also seems to indicate that there is no scrapping, and what we are seeing are just shadows. As and when we get another updated feed of Alexandria drydock, I'll run the images through the algorithm again. P.S. I had noticed Whimbrel / Tariq on Google Earth. In fact, I have been following some of the older warships still around. Two other warships interesting to follow are the HTMS Pin Klao (the last destroyer escort from World War 2 still serving), and the HTMS Makut Rajakumarn (a frigate dating back to the early 1970s). Both ships serve as training ships or in ceremonial roles today.

Wimble needs saving, it needs to come home and live on as a museum ship! It's so sad that the UK having such a long NAVY history has so few actual ships as museums. And very little from WW2 and even less from WW1. The UK Government must rethink and see the importance of our history and get some of these ships back that were sold long ago!

I'm learning every time a bit more about the fates of the ships I play in various world of warships games, this is the Black Swan tier1 cruiser in Wows Blitz. I just didn't expect to see my hometown Split when the ship was visiting, thanks a lot for this and all other history of the ships

Unfortunately, the last Bar class boom defence vessel from WW2, has just been scrapped in South Africa, having apparently failed as a museum ship. SAS Somerset was the former HMS Barcross, the last WW2 survivor of ships built in my home town of Blyth in 1941. D

The “list” your seeing is most likely just off nadir issues. This occurs when the satellite’s orbit is off vertical from where the target is and creates a geometric distortion. It’s pretty typical of Google Earth imagery and most large area data collections where a wide area is collected rather than an exact spot directly under the sensor.

In 2010 I used to chat in what was the Portuguese Club to a few red neck US shipyard workers who worked in the Alex docks. It was part of the continuing Camp David agreement where Egypt gets military equipment and old US ships that need refurbishment. There was a likely urban myth they talked about regarding some presentation made to the Egyptian admirals where the contractor used Google Earth images of the dockyard. This caused consternation in the Egyptian ranks and a demand for the presentation to be immediately stopped since such images were obviously highly classified details. As I say it's likely a myth but anyone who has worked in Egypt could well imagine it being true.

There were 2 different vessels in front of Wimberel in the last 2 dry dock photos. This would indicate that she was moved out of drydock and the other boats pulled in, and then she returned to her original drydock position. What boats were these and why that order in the drydock.?

Complete ignorance here. What is the difference between a sloop and a corvette?

I think a sloop fits between a corvette and a frigate in terms of size.
@jerry2357
@jerry2357 13 күн бұрын
Sloops were proper warships, with steam turbine engines. They had a much heavier armament than a Flower class corvette (which had triple expansion steam engines), and because Whimbrel etc. had six dual-purpose 4 inch guns, they were much better for anti-aircraft work. After the war, sloops were reclassified by the Royal Navy as frigates. The term "frigate" was only revived when the River class came into service (these were originally described as "twin screw corvettes", and had two piston steam engines of the same type that the Flower class corvettes used).
