Scotland, made up of some of the Celtic team that went on to win that year's European Cup, were simply were mesmerized by Best's brilliance as he danced around their players, running every inch of the Windsor Park pitch.
Dave Clements scored Northern Ireland's only goal in the 1-0 win, but if ever a player defeated a team on his own it was George Best that day.

I remember being all of 9 yrs old and being at Windsor park that day with my father.Gteat walk down memory lane thx to George Best.. What a day.

The trouble with Scotland back then was that we had great players ( Best and Jennings apart , the Scots were individually superior ) but they just couldn't bring it all together and perform as a unit . Best was irresistible this day .

Remarkably, the team in green were then referred to as Ireland.in those days. After they were forced to play away for 8 or so years( due to Scotland "the brave" refusing to play in Belfast),they were subsequently known as Northern Ireland as the political divide hardened.

I remember being at this game, when the Home Internationals were played throughout the year. I remember the huge crowd and as a young lad the phenomenal roar when Clements scored. Northern Ireland dominated, and Best was at his absolute best. I remember his boot coming off at one point when he was about to take a corner. He just hit it with his left foot like it was no trouble at all.

This is one game . He had very very few games like this throughout his career . Best had serious flaws in his game . He was a ball hogger and not a team player . People who claim he is the greatest player of all time are deluded . Against the best teams at the time such as liverpool. leeds , man city etc . He did nothing . Go ask any fans of those teams where Best was during those games they will say he was in their defenders pocket. Maradona,Messi , Cryuff, Pele etc were unstoppable against any team . George Best who could be neutralised . These are uncomfortably truths for you Best fan boys who spout nonsense about him being the greatest.

@@the-np4mrhe is British, If your born in NI your a British citizen and hold a British passport, Ni is part of the United Kingdom, People in NI can also identify as Irish but doesn’t take the fact away you are British, Best was also born and raised in Loyalist East Belfast were you won’t see anything Irish at all,

Scots remind us English that they beat England at Wembley, but they don't remember this game. These matches were for qualification for the Euros in 1968. If Scotland had won in Windsor Park, they would have qualified.

Not quite true, there were only 4 Celtic players in Scotland team: Ronnie Simpson, Tommy Gemmell, Bobby Murdoch and Willie Wallace. Pity Jimmy Johnstone wasn't playing - him and Best on same park at their peak would have been something!

Oh for sure, still would be. I suppose we'll have to wait for unification before it happens, which is a shame-the rugby team has shown what's possible when the whole island works together.
