This beautiful HO scale model railroad layout, including steam and diesel locomotives, depicts the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway (“AT&SF” or “ATSF”), which was one of the larger railroads in the United States forming a transcontinental rail route. AT&SF was known for its passenger trains, notably the Chicago-Los Angeles “El Capitan” and “Super Chief”. Also the “Pacific Fruit Express” was certainly well known in the field of freight rail transport.
The Santa Fe Railway was once a pioneer in freight transport and operated a large and varying fleet of steam locomotives in the beginnings, for example, the 2-10-2 Santa Fe type, 4-4-2 Atlantic type, 2-6-0 Mogul type, 2-8-0 Consolidation type, 2-8-2 Mikado type, 2-10-0 Decapod type, 2-6-2 Prairie type, 4-8-4 Northern type, 4-6-4 Hudson type, 4-6-2 Pacific type, 4-8-2 Mountain type, 2-8-4 Berkshire type and 2-10-4 Texas type. Santa Fe also operated a fleet of heavy articulated steam locomotives, for example, class 2-6-6-2, class 2-8-8-0, class 2-10-10-2, class 2-8-8-2 and the rare 4-4-6-2 Mallet type.
Due to the lack of abundant water sources for steam trains in the American desert, the Santa Fe Railway was among the first railroads to receive large numbers of streamlined diesel locomotives for use in freight service, in the form of the EMD FT. For the first EMD FT locomotives the railroad selected a color scheme consisting of dark blue accented by a pale yellow stripe up the nose and pale yellow highlights around the cab and along the mesh and framing of openings in the sides of the engine compartment. Finally, the era of steam locomotives is long gone in reality. Santa Fe retired its last steam locomotive in 1959. In 1995/1996 Santa Fe merged with the Burlington Northern Railroad to form the Burlington Northern and Santa Fe Railway (“BNSF”).
That is why we see both steam locomotives and diesel locomotives on this model railroad layout that was built by the Dutch railfan Gerrit Schoenmaker. During his visits to the United States, Gerrit was inspired by the landscape and by the trains. Therefore, he started building this impressive American model railway layout in HO scale after his retirement. The steam model locomotives are 2197 ATSF 3800 Class 2-10-2 by Broadway Limited Imports (BLI). The AT&SF GP-7 Diesel Engine is from MTH Electric Trains (M.T.H.) and the EMD F7 diesel electric locomotive is the Athearn 3203 Santa Fe no. 228C.

Spectacular video! The audio was so real it took me back to when I was a child. Listening to the midnight train that passed through at the end of our street each night. That train sound was kinda sad. I loved the small details of the train going by while cowboys were wrangling a horse. There was even a advertising bilboard. Nice touch! Thank you for sharing this video.

Thanks for sharing this video. I really enjoyed watching it. I am from the UK where we have had some really interesting locomotives / trains over the years...but I have always been fascinated by the big American diesels. In 1999, I went on the Grand Canyon Railway hauled by the ALCO FPA-4... and in 2004, I went on the Verde Canyon Railroad hauled by the EMD FP7s. The Rail Road Crossing scene at 6.32 into the video reminded me of when I drove down to Tombstone, Arizona and missed my turning off I-10. I exited the freeway at the next Junction (East of Benson).... but had to wait for a really long train to pass. I checked on Google Earth and the road now goes underneath the railway line.

Such a pleasure to see trains running at correct scale speeds. If you crank up the light level on the layout and reduce the aperture on the camera you should be able to get more realistic depth of field.

Steam locomotives have character and stand out on any layout. To be honest yours is one of the silliest comments I've read on any train video. The other being could your trains run any slower.

I have a 1971 Chevelle, it is NOT original, it is hot rodded. I heard some guys say something about the one I had when I was 18 in 1985, I wish I knew then what I know now, for I would have asked; Where is yours? This is what this man likes, leave him be. GREAT work, thanks for sharing from those of us who simply just love to watch.
