It appears as though you started the design of your layout with the location of your buildings first almost as much as you did with the location and layout of the track. I love industrial areas, and it's hard not to if you're going to model the 50's-60's era. I would really love to see a plan view of your layout(s) some time. I'm not sure that in real life, even in that era, you could ever find an industrial area of a large city that's as jam packed and crowed as what yours represents, but that's what's so great about model railroading. You're the boss; it's your layout; and you can do what ever suits your fancy. You don't have to follow any set rules !! I may never get around to setting up my layout, but if I do, you can be sure that I will have been inspired by your industrial area layout, and will definitely be stealing some of your ideas !! Thanks !! Do you have any track on your HO layout that loops completely around the layout ?

I did start with the buildings and some track work I wanted to include. Actually in older industrial areas you could see track work like that. I did environmental consulting years back on hot into old areas and I was amazed at the number of tracks going all directions. That did give me inspiration for the switching layout 😄

That is one fantastic layout, Bill. Really well done. I like the complex track arrangement, so long as it serves a purpose as yours does. I look forward to your On30 adventures- I had a little of that stuff at one point as I first thought about a layout but sold it off and elected for HO scale. I remain intrigued by it.

Beautiful explanation man, love it. I model N scale and just started getting into HOn3, I thought I was craaaaaazy trying to model 2 different scales, you will be doing 3 different scales. Niiiiiiice. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

Look for my episodes 126 for the twist pines and episode 125 for furnace filter trees. All are super easy to do with just a little practice . Have fun!

I need to get educated, but the several smoke stacks coming out of the ground are being fed from underground?? I am just trying to figure out either scratch build a power house with the stack coming out of the roof or alongside the building, but if it's like what it might be that will be great and make it easier to setup. I am deciding to setup a 16 bay roundhouse and turntable for my N Scale.

You bring up a great point . For me I imagine that the stacks are fed from a basement boiler room the way I set them. However they can be set coming up thru a building or be touching a buildings exterior wall. If you are building something based on a prototype from years past you may try to find the area on a Sanborn Fire Insurance map. Older parts of cities are usually covered and those maps provide a great source of details and dimensions on old buildings. Can find them on line at the library of Congress and may local libraries.
