he composed it, he sings it best ...... ..... this is not his first version -they were purely instrumental ... it's just his best early vocal ... a real masterpiece

And now the purple dusk of twilight time Steals across the meadows of my heart High up in the sky the little stars climb Always reminding me that were apart You wander down the lane and far away Leaving me a song that will not die Love is now the stardust Of yesterday The music Of the years Gone by Sometimes I wonder why I spend The lonely nights Dreaming of a song. The melody haunts my reverie And I am once again with you. When our love was new, and each kiss an inspiration. But that was long ago, and now my consolation Is in the stardust of a song. Beside the garden wall, when stars are bright You are in my arms The nightingale tells his fairy tale Of paradise where roses grew. Though I dream in vain, in my heart you will remain My stardust melody The memory of loves refrain.

I apologize Garry, I was mistaken about Stardust and the theme from Picnic. The Picnic movie theme was combined with another song called "Moonglow" at the time. It was a big hit but it did not involve "Stardust."

NEVER EVER NEVER WAS THIS SONG EVER ONE UPPED! I have truly found the works of H. Carmichael to be the MOST amazing pieces ever played in the Century and will only age like the BEST of Wines with time. A "One Hook" Con Artist, I mean Rock Star, I mean American/England/Canada/World Idol, EVERY DAMN MUSICIAN after, they heard how sweet the sound, REALLY IS could never play better. INCLUDING THAT DAMN DEVIL FROM DOWN IN GEORGIA. There is nothing stronger in so many parallels of mankind, than MUSIC. And Once the World heard HOAGY CARMICHAEL'S Compositions, THAT IS WHEN they themselves became better musicians. L. Armstrong's version among some others is proof positive. There was "something" within this great man's music. I TRULY BELIEVE IT WAS HIS CREATOR. He like so many others struggled with their own talent, I mean he obtained a Law Degree, I assume because he was wise, but he Wrote/played from more than the Heart. GOD ROCKS! I hope to meet, greet, and take a seat at the keys with him in Heaven. GOD Rest his Soul, may his Sweet Music play forever and ever. AMEN!

I played at the Stardust in the 1950s and Hoagy came in a couple of times when I was playing piano there with a quartet. For us he was a movie star (To Have and Have Not) but he shook my hand. The owner George Lycas always made a fuss over him and he seemed to enjoy it. The Stardust did not exist prior to the song, it was named after the song. Some people thought erroneously he had composed the song there, but according the legend he was near Dunn Meadow on the edge of the IU campus and he ran to the Book Nook on the corner of Indiana and Kirkwood where there was a piano and he worked up the song. There may be some truth to that legend.

I have never heard a bouncy, lilting version of Stardust like this. Interesting that Hoagy Carmichael seems to have had this different sound in mind when he wrote it. You would never know it had a weary, mystical, ethereal mood when played slower from this version. I'm singing it to myself now with a half way in between tempo compared to a slow version, and I like it a lot that way.

Did you know that the Fortune 500 did a complex study on success in life, factoring in of course wealth, health, etc., and the one thing that was a TRULY REMARKABLE TRAIT in the most wealthiest and successful people, (According to the standards of F 500) ? EVERY DANG DIDLEY DANG the MOST ABSOLUTE AND CONCRETE CONNECTION: Was that they had ALL taken Music in High School and beyond. But the Strength of Music, and that of Beautiful Music, will never be removed from the face of the Earth for Ever and Ever Again. Albeit they have all tried since this and H. Carmichael put Pencil to Paper around the Black and White Keys, or in the Cafe at School, he was an amazing person, I truly feel a bond. I have the utmost respect for the Wisdom shown and used by some, not all, Lawyers. Which since H. Carmichael was one, he is sort of my HERO.

@OffGrid910 жыл бұрын
I wonder why Carmichael only sang the main section, skipping the intro. It's the only song of which I'm aware that has that structure, with both halves being equally lovely, equally memorable, equally famous. The introduction has two stanzas, written in strict rhyme (a b a b, a b a b) and more-or-less even meter, to that perfect cascading melody, the words expressing a general melancholy and nostalgia that beautifully introduce the main section, which describes that moment (the last moment?) of a passionate love affair. This main section definitely does have a rhyme scheme, but it's fractured; and the structure of the lyrics almost defies definition, tracking the melody, not worrying about a metric pattern. The tune of this part of the song, and the lyrics, seem to flow naturally, like a spring rising from the earth, following the wayward thoughts of a man recalling that perfect moment with a woman he loved and lost. I can't imagine why he left out the intro....
@tuxguys9 жыл бұрын
What we now think of as the "Intro" used to be thought of as the "Verse," with the main body of the tune as the "Chorus." You're right, it's equally magnificent... ...so much so that Sinatra made a recording of "Stardust" that was only the "Verse:" kzfaq.info/get/bejne/aOBdod16usm6cXU.html
@benjaminroe311ify8 жыл бұрын
+OffGrid9 In other vocal versions earlier he did sing both parts. If you listen to his instrumental versions posted here to KZfaq you can hear him play both parts beautifully and transcendentally as well.
@PZBrooklyn11 ай бұрын
Many performers skipped the first section-- Louis Armstrong, Coltrane. Interestingly, Sinatra skipped it in his first version with Dorsey, but in his 1962 version he only sang the first section and skipped the rest!
@PZBrooklyn11 ай бұрын
@@tuxguys it's a very unusual structure. The sections don't alternate like verse/chorus songs. And it's hard to call the first part an "intro" when it's actually half the length of the song! It's more like a medley structure, with 2 songs put together, almost like some Lennon/McCartney compositions.

What's interesting is that Hoagy didn't write the lyrics at all, and it was originally done in jump tempo, not as tear jerker at all- circa 1927. The lyrics came along 2 years later, and it was others who chose the now iconic slow tempo.

This is just a cover of another song. My theory is that Hoagy Carmichael stumbled into a time machine and zipped ahead to 1959, where he heard a chart-topper called "Sleep Walk" by Santo & Johnny on the radio. Then he went back to 1942, covered it, and made it famous. Because he did it first, everyone thinks he wrote it, but American Bandstand knows the truth: They're on TV!

Thank you sineaddg (you look familiar, and very pretty - something about your eyes). I saw your other comment here, but I have to respectfully disagree, it sounds like 1933 at the earliest to me, more like 1927. (I have the complete Louis Armstrong recordings from 1924 to 1929, and the sound quality was moving beyond this by 1930... ...though, it could be some kind of home recording, or lesser studio. Things were pretty slick by 1942, well, for artists as big as Hoagy Carmichael was anyway.
