We demonstrate the Hobbing process to make gears. The simultaneous rotary motion of the gear blank and the Hob (Cutting Tool) generates the Involute gear tooth form. While there are other methods such as milling and shaping, hobbing has a clear... bit.ly/3onfQon
advantage in terms of speed and accuracy. No wonder probably 80% of modern torque transmitting gears are hobbed.

For every rotation of the Hob - the work (gear blank) will rotate one tooth space. 1-thread hob.
For every rotation of the Hob - the work (gear blank) will rotate two tooth spaces. 2-thread hob.
For every rotation of the Hob - the work (gear blank) will rotate x tooth spaces. X-thread hob.
The MATH: (YEP FREE CALCULATORS TO KEEP IT EASY)
To process a gear with hobbing there are very few things you MUST know; (INPUTS)
1) The # of Teeth in your Gear(s)
2) The pitch or module of the gear teeth
3) The Pressure Angle

To setup your hobber you must match the ratio of the machine to your change gears;

You BUY/RENT the cutting hob and the involute shape and pressure angle are already in the cutter;

Hob the gear and then do the QA/QC work to measure the gear. Using the MOP calculator you can check you gear and make adjustments to your process until you have the pitch line just right. All based on the inputs above. You can also make modified profiles if you are more advanced and lower gear noise.

Manual Equipment Used
Okuma LS Lathe, Capable of many normal engine lathe operations and also includes pitch and module threading capability that is useful for making Worms, and Hobs.
Equipped with a 6-Jaw Pratt-Burnerd chuck, Swiss Multifix QC toolholder, Koolmist, VFD to manage speeds more accurately and provide some novel additional capability.
DuMont press, broach and bushing sets.
Pfauter RS00 Hobbing Machines circa 1950 & 1970. Electronics rewired with PLC system and a few lines of code to replace the relay logic of the original system(that you cannot find parts for).
Yes, we do have a CNC lathe for large count precise gear jobs. We have 4 Pfauter RS00 machines giving us good capacity, along with shapers and bevel gear machines. Give us a try, send us an RFQ. If you look closely we used two different hobbers in this video, one processed the gear and the other the pinion. 2-Machines finishes a job quicker, and lets you check both gears with MOP and in-mesh to make fine adjustments. Parallel processing gears is cool.

The history of gears is surprisingly interesting - the process of milling and hobbing gears plus the transmission of torque and movement all find a place here. We will open the "Secret Gear Case" to YT as well through this channel - a personal mission
