Hobie fishing kayaks in SHALLOW rivers (why they are IDEAL)

I always hear people saying you cant take hobie kayaks on the river, in shallow water, or small creeks. I hope this video will showcase why the mirage drive actually is one of the best systems to have especially when on the river in current, when you're fishing. This will showcase the drive system and other options for river fishing from Hobie, and what sets them apart.

Just discovered your channel and have subscribed. Thanks so much for this video in particular. I have a 2020 Hobie Outback and have been hesitant about bringing out in a local river here in E TN, but after seeing this, I’m going to try it. I wasn’t as worried about the pedal drive as I was the rudder, but again, this video made want to try.

Nice yaks for sure , bin using my slayer propel 10 in rivers around me , the drive just pops up if i hit anything as i don't lock it down , as for really skinny water i just prop it up a bit and drift through or paddle if need be , once clear drop the pedals down and oof you go...lol The slayer p10 is light weight and easy to handle on/off the water , just a great all around pedal yak that does paddle okay , but it's a pedal yak first.

Thanks, Kristine... NOW ya tell me...! (About the break-away drive from Hobie, that is!) The did'n't have that when I tested the Outback against the Titan. (Ran over 5 stumps, bent everything, and "opted" for the Titan-as it just "kicks-up" when you hit underwater structures!) Now...to start saving for that Big Pro Fishing Hobie, for my NEXT one... Haha! Thanks for the Video (and make sure you say "Hi" to OLA, she's upset - not being able to fish the Spring Spawn, I'm sure!)...

I've used my Lynx only a few times but so far it has been phenomenal. One time on a river but with much less current and rocks than in the video. The low weight makes it a great option for people like me who struggle loading heavier kayaks. The hard shell ACE-TEC construction resisted gouges better than expected when I had to drag the fully loaded kayak over boulders to get in and out of the river. Looking forward to Kristine's videos about it.

The issue is paddling when you have to take the drive out and move the heavier Hobie PA through fast water. I have had mine for the past 3 years and that has been the issue. I do say that yes you can do all of the things you showed but again it is all about the maneuverability without the drive in since it is so heavy.

I plan to be on the New and the James later this spring and summer. I do a lot of fly fishing so I have to be able to stand. I am a little concerned about the weight. Do you trailer? Not sure I want to lift one up on a full size pick up rack. I love river smallies but now live in Clearwater so the boat has to be able to hit the inshore game. Will the Mirage be enough boat?

I always bring a spare drive - just in case. And also do floats so I don’t have to worry about the going against current haha. But several models paddle well. The outback is exceptional. My pro angler.. I can paddle it.. but it’s not ideal . It’ll wear you out

So it definitely looks like shallow waters in this video, but we’re the kayaks actually scraping across any rocks? I know the fins kick up but what if rocks scrape across the drive portion that is below the kayak? I’m just asking because I live in NC and the New River can get low in my area and looks like the drive could get damaged if it rocks scrape the bottom.

Hi, awesome video! How well does the mirage drive deal with being drug over rocks? I do a 5 day trip on the Greenbrier River and there are occasional sections where, if the water is low like this year, you will have no choice but to drag your kayak across short sections of shallow, rock strewn sections where a loaded kayak will drag. Thanks!

Hobie's are NOT good river kayaks. Who wants to drag their heavy $3,000+ kayak over rocks all day? Or get their drive stuck on structure? Maybe pro staff folks who didn't pay full sticker price, trying to sell kayaks, would think it's a good idea. But your average Joe Kayak Angler isn't going to go the Hobie route for for river fishing. It's like taking a 2020 Mercedes 4MATIC to an off road park for some rock crawling.
@kristinefischer2289
@kristinefischer2289 4 жыл бұрын
I can understand your thoughts on that- but there have been many river rats (not on Hobie’s team) that had those same thoughts, then demoed a Hobie and never looked back. They actually are incredible river kayaks, you just have to get the right one for where you are. The outback isn’t heavy at all, and on wheels it’s extremely manageable. I’ve hauled my pro angler over A mile through the woods and down a steep bank to access backwaters .. and that SUCKED. But there are models that are much more suited for that. Also- the hulls take a beating. I have been in several brands and this is the only one I’d want on rivers just because it makes fishing a breeze. Respect your thoughts tho! Happy fishing!
