Ondine is a romantic three-act magic opera by the German musician ETA Hoffmann (1776 - 1822). Although Hoffmann was also a great poet, he had his friend Friedrich de la Motte Fouqué write the libretto, according to his own fairytale short story. The first took place on August 3, 1816 in Berlin, on the occasion of the anniversary celebrations of Friedrich Wilhelm III. of Prussia.. . In the original score, the musical or sung numbers are linked by spoken dialogues.

Intérieur d'une cabane de pêcheurs le soir,
inquiets pour leur fille adoptive Ondine, qui aurait dû rentrer depuis longtemps. Le chevalier Huldbrand , qui a trouvé refuge chez eux pour fuir la tempête, apprend du couple qu'ils ont eu une fille il y a 16 ans.Mais le destin leur a été cruel, car après un an, la fille s'est noyée dans le lac voisin. Peut-être qu'elle a été kidnappée par un esprit de l'eau, car son corps n'a jamais été retrouvé. Par un coup de chance, cependant, Ondine leur a été amenée le même jour. Ils l'aiment comme leur propre enfant. Huldbrand déclare qu'il sort dans la nuit pour aller la chercher.
Au bord du lac où elle s'est installée,
Ondine se querelle avec son oncle Kuehleborn, le puissant prince de l'eau. Il l'avait souvent mise en garde contre les humains, mais Ondine avait quand même insisté pour quitter son élément liquide afin de trouver un mortel pour l'épouser, seul moyen d'acquérir l'âme humaine qui lui manque. Alors que le différend s'intensifie, Huldbrand apparaît et Kühleborn disparaît dans le lac avec ses esprits aquatiques.
Huldbrand est charmé par la beauté d'Ondine et attiré par elle. C'est le coup de foudre : Huldbrand lui demande de l'accompagner dans son château. Des profondeurs du lac, les appels d'avertissement des esprits de l'eau atteignent à plusieurs reprises les oreilles d'Ondine, mais elle y reste sourde et accepte volontiers l'invitation du Chevalier.
Lorsque le couple d'amoureux revient dans la cabane du pêcheur, ils découvrent un visiteur, le Père Heilmann, religieux en pèlerinage qui s'y est arrêté. Cet évènement convient très bien à Ondine et Huldbrand. Sans plus tarder, ils lui demandent de les marier. Les parents adoptifs d'Ondine n'ayant pas d'objection, leur alliance est prononcée.
Au matin, Ondine, Huldbrand et le Père partent pour le château du Chevalier, secrètement suivis par Kuehleborn, toujours inquiet pour sa nièce et prêt à l'aider.
Au chateau, Ondine rencontre Berthalda, fille adoptive des châtelains ... virtuellement la promise
du chevalier ....
Inside a fishermen’s cabin in the evening,
Worried about their adopted daughter Ondine, who should have been home a long time ago. The Chevalier Huldbrand, who found refuge in their home to escape the storm, learns from the couple that they had a daughter 16 years ago.But fate was cruel to them, because after a year, the girl drowned in the nearby lake. Maybe she was kidnapped by a water spirit, because her body was never found. By a stroke of luck, however, Ondine was brought to them on the same day. They love her as their own child. Huldbrand declares that he goes out in the night to go and get her.
By the lake where she settled,
Ondine is quarrelling with her uncle Kuehleborn, the powerful water prince. He had often warned her against humans, but Ondine had still insisted on leaving her liquid element in order to find a mortal to marry her, the only way to acquire the human soul that she lacks. As the dispute intensifies, Huldbrand appears and Kühleborn disappears into the lake with his aquatic spirits.
Huldbrand is charmed by Ondine’s beauty and attracted to her. It was love at first sight: Huldbrand asked her to accompany him to his castle. From the depths of the lake, the warning calls of the spirits of the water reached Ondine’s ears several times, but she remained deaf and willingly accepted the invitation of the Knight.
When the couple of lovers return to the fisherman’s cabin, they discover a visitor, Father Heilmann, a religious pilgrim who stopped there. This event suits Ondine and Huldbrand very well. Without further ado, they ask him to marry them. The adoptive parents of Ondine having no objection, their alliance is pronounced.
In the morning, Ondine, Huldbrand and Father left for the Chevalier’s castle. They are secretly followed by Uncle Kuehleborn who is always worried about his niece and wants to help her if she should be in danger.
