I think that the fact they actually ported such a huge game, and actually made it playable on the worlds most popular console at the time. It's impressive in my opinion. People forget the switch chip is 6 years old and VERY limited.

I've played the Switch version for about 6 hours so far and I'm really enjoying it. Okay yeah the graphics aren't amazing, but it performs well. I don't have a PS5 or a good enough PC to play it, so I'm just glad I can still enjoy the game on Switch.

I found it interesting that the Switch version is "less open world" with loading times between areas, is this due to the Switch not having an SSD or because it only has 4 GB of RAM? I was curious if the PS4 and Xbox One versions that use HDs are also like this, does anyone know?

@@MoonSarito entering a shop in Hogsmead on Xbox One requires waiting almost half a minute for door to open. So yes, older consoles with HDDs also struggled with loading some areas.

@@MoonSarito It think it's a mix of factors. Surely the low ram is one of the biggest problems, but also the not-so-powered mobile cpu couldn't guarantee a good transition between different areas. Right now you can see the popup (understandably) when reaching the ground (if flying) or reaching too fast certain zones or even when loading the game after a reboot. Just think about reading and rendering even more areas, there's not enough power. Not even mentioning the lack of ssd or even a good HDD. But, we must admit, it's still a great porting, surely better than MK1 and GTA trilogy

I think every single review thats talking about the visuals is forgetting one thing.. THE SIZE OF THE SWITCH SCREEN. In person the game looks beautiful. Not its not a ps5, but all of the KZfaq videos are showing the game blown up in size.. basically magnified..but when played in handheld mode with a much smaller ratio, it looks about 10x better then every single KZfaq video

I consider the Switch version a great opportunity to play the game. Although the graphics are obviously downgraded, it is still amazing that I can play the game on a 6 years old platform, also considering that my PC is too old to play the steam version.

I think having a game like hogwarts running on a system that has a gpu thats around 1/3 the performance of a GTX 950 is incredibly impressive. The devs did alright with this. I don't think they could have done any better.

on PS4 a lot of things in the game were simplified to give good performance. One that I noticed was in the castle, the bridges between buildings were all covered, whereas in the PS5 version they were open so you could see the view. I wonder if the Switch version is the same.

Ah I would imagine you're right! Near the end of the video I passed by some opaque white windows in the Switch version. I meant to go find them in the PC version to see if they were transparent there, but ran out of time to check it. But I imagine they made similar cutbacks in this version too.

I don’t mind the loading screens, they are annoying but you don’t have to wait that long. I’m just glad outside you can fly and walk around with no loading screen except for when you have to enter hogsmeade.

I think Witcher 3 is the best example of a solid port to the Switch and I think Hogwarts Legacy is a very close second. It's astounding how well they did getting this on the Switch.

Great Review! I have it on PC but I catch myself playing it a lot more on the Switch due to its portability. When frames drop or I look hard enough at the graphics I kinda sigh a bit but for the most part I tend to forget about it and have a great time playing. Regardless I always remind myself that it's kind of phenomenal that they were even able to port this thing over lol. I'd recommend it!

Yeah this just shows how exhausted the switch hardware is. This is absolutely a well done port. This is probably the first port that's introducing the new standard for how new ports need to be downgraded significantly just to play it on this outdated console.

I got my Switch to play this game on Monday and I'm really enjoying it so far. It runs fine on my console - although this could be because it isn't competing with memory from any other big games, the only other game I have is Nintendo Sports (the free game that isn't really free) The only mild graphical glitch so far is my MC's smile is a bit too wide when she talks but this game is amazing I started my first playthrough Monday and my second today

They really had to downgrade the graphics and framerate to make this game playable on Switch, and players doesnt care about it! Theyre having fun with it, while on the plane, on the car or on the school. You cant play PS5 with you on the plane, Nintendo Switch does. so yeah, they dont care about the graphics and the framerate.

Very impressive for a handheld that can run for a proper long time on battery and on a 7 inch oled screen you won’t notice a lot of difference.I finished it on ps5 but would happily play it in handheld on the switch.

One thing I don't think you covered that SwitchUp noted, is that when you're in combat in outdoor areas the framerate can drop to 20FPS or less.

That's BEYOND Impressive for an AAA game to actually run at 30 FPS most of the time. Most if not all other AAA games run subpar at 25 or even lower like 15-20 FPS on Switch. I'm a PC and Switch gamer so I played HL on PC already as I kind of expected subpar experience but honestly I wouldn't be mad playing this if I had to... Wish more Devs would optimize their game better on Switch...

hogwarts legacy working on the switch is a major demonstration on why optimization is so vital for games. many modern AAA games opt out of optimization, which is why we are getting games that are 200+ GB in size and unoptimized files and code making games choppy and laggy even on modern hardware.

I reckon the SD card is a huge factor in fps drops. As someone who once tried booting Shadow of the Tomb Raider on PC via SSD then again on SD card, the performance was night and day. Though considering even a faster HDD will outperform an SD card, it's definitely time for an m.2 or something on Switch or its sequel.

This is the best review for the switch version so far. No tit for tat, not hyping the game, not bombing the game. Me personally, i love it so far, i think it needs some work here and there, but its fun, most of the time very beautiful and immersiv and just like with witcher 3, cut in graphics takes nothing from the charme of the game beneath the graphics. I also had fun with ps1 or x360 games at one time, i did not unlearn having fun with good games and not so good graphics, because graphics are only as good to what you compare them to.

2:20 : It's normal, the definition on switch is way low than pc. Switch barely success 1080P, the first Zelda was in 900P. That's why it take less place on the "hard drive" and the quality is less good. What was the resolution used on pc for the test ? 1080p or 1440 or more ? (with all the options in ultra ?). I think everyone out there who tought the game would come out differently was a fool. This game, realistically, couldn't have been made better on Switch. They did the magic here, it's an almost 7 yeas old potato and it's working in a better state than eveyone with common sense might have tought. Let's just be grateful that a lot of people (mostly children) would be able to enjoy it on their current machine, even if it isn't the most powerful one

The Switch is not a potato, it’s 7 years old but it’s far from a potato and this game proves once again that if the developers put in the work and is talented then, you’ll see great results and see that the Switch can do when effort is put in by the developers.

They tend to compare its own games or portings with those on PS4/Steam Deck while there's no comparison at all for obvious reason. Can't you see the futility of all those videos comparing the graphics or framerate of a console with a mobile chipset with that of a home console or handled with intel/amd, a better gpu and much more ram? It is simply an unfair and useless comparison, often put on screen to allow underdeveloped individuals to start with the phrases 'It runs at 10fps' or 'The graphics are blurry, my eyes are burning'. The technical analysis (considering the hardware the games run on) is more than legitimate, but comparing Switch games to any more powerful machine honestly makes me smile, I understand it's a way for youtubers to ride the wave of the moment, but it remains and will remain a ridiculous thing.

@@GiuseppeAngelino95 the Switch is comparable to an Xbox 360 or PS3 in graphics capabilities and that’s not a bad thing as those systems had impressive graphics for their time, yes the Switch is underpowered compared a home console like PS4 or PS5 but as you say it’s powered by a mobile chipset that was once cutting edge a few years ago, I personally think the Switch truly punched above its weight with some of the best looking games on the system we’re Nintendo developed or Switch exclusives like Bayonetta, Zelda and Mario, that’s what I bought my Switch for, not to play Hogwarts Legacy, which for me the Switch should have gotten a version with the Switch in mind.

I'd definitely go with the PC version. I'd only recommend the Switch version if it's the only console available to you and the only way you'd be able to play the game.

Idc about the textures, as long as I can tell what it is and it isn’t 8 bit, it’s fine. I have this game on the PS4 so if I want looks, I’ll go there, and just having the entirety of the game in the palms of your hands is why I want this version.

I'm actually surprized by the performance. Surem it is ugly but what can we ask from a hynrid platform that is almost 7 years old? I can't help but to compare it to the Switch version of Mortal Kombat 1 and it is clear which developer didn't care about delaying the port if it meant achieving good results. Thumbs up to them!

It might not even be the developers fault of the twitch version of MK one. It was probably Warner Bros that wanted MK out the door along with the other version so I’m not going to put too much blame on the devs here for how MK one turned on switch.

They did the magic by nerfing the openworld aspect of the game, now there are loading zones, but it's honestly still impressive, it looked better than The Witcher 3 at launch and have higher resolutions overall too

People always talk about the game being playable, like if it's playable than that is enough. However, some games, especially this one, the standout feature is the graphics. If you don't have the graphics, then it's a pretty basic game just like many others.

It depends where you come from. The graphics still standout but if you are used to 4k high end textures and resolution, you are talking about visuals that are more in line with CGI cutscenes/movies or series than yeah the Switch version might look like an early PS360 game but in reality is still above that. Especially the character models are way more than the PS360 could do. Also look at the amount of Watts the newer console uses, that doesnt seem to deminish while a Switch uses 15 watt at highest when docked, the PS4 was atleast 150 Watt.

I really have to say I expected this game to get a cloud version for the switch because I didn't think they made it runable on the switch, so I am kinda suprised by how it runs and looks, I mean its not looking great but I really didn't expected it to get anything besides a cloud version

I find it graphically very similar to The Witcher 3 next gen patch release on Switch. Absolutely beautiful, but of course the next gen consoles version are very superior. But not enough to make me choose them instead of the Switch.

I realized the graphic downgrade on Switch is The Witcher, honestly it’s not enjoyable. But other than that, the games meant to playing on Switch is awesome in both graphics and performance. Still waiting to play Hogwarts Legacy soon!

I got it for the switch as i know my pc would crash just trying to play this game honestly thr graphic drop and framerate isn't that bad. Got to remember switch is 7 years old so the graphics and gameplay may not be as sharp and detailed as the pc and other newer tech. Besides i have hopes that portkey could always send out an update that could increase the games graphic design later on if they do decide to make a dlc for the game

its only right that the graphics will be much much dial down, from more than 70GB to 14GB, and the switch has similar hardware to an iPhone 7/8, I'm more surprised they pulled it off, and honestly i wish more developers would port their PC games to Mobile phones

For some reason the game runs so much worse on my switch. For me the loading screen after the intro scene, leading into the sorting ceremony was around 3-5 minutes. Most the doors take around 15-30 seconds to let me through, some have even taken multiple minutes and the room behind them STILL HASN'T LOADED! This has caused me to fall out of the world once. Most of the time the textures are not fully loaded. It takes an annoying amount of time to open the map/settings. Nevertheless it is still impressive that it runs at all on the switch ngl

@@zanehere2044 like, for Doors roughly 5 seconds, and for actual loading screens like 10 seconds. The ceremony played out fine aswell

What SD card are you using? Remember, even a faster HDD will run circles around SD cards. So opt for a class 10 card like a Samsung QVO

Funny how people always seem to argue about the Switch version. Lots of people who have a Switch are happy with the game, but than there are always these people who need to into a stupid argument that the Xbox or ps4 and 5 are better. Yes that's logic sense. But that doesn't mean that people who play it on the Switch can't enjoy the game just as much. People can be acting like little children to argue about stupid little things like this. 😂😂 Just enjoy the game. That's all.
