What's the difference between Era and Fue? When to use the imperfect or the preterite in the simple past tense in Spanish?
The difference between the preterite and the imperfect is difficult in Spanish, but in this video, I'll show you the difference between the era and fue and the use of the imperfect and the preterite with lots of examples. Brenda! You are truly an exceptional teacher! I studied spanish in university at a fairly high level and was definitely conversant (but not fluent). 25 years later, I'm rejuvenating my Spanish language skills so I watch a lot of videos. I'm pleasantly surprised (like many others) that I can understand 98% of your instruction. I know you're likely speaking a bit slower and pronouncing everything very nicely. Una aclaración: Pretérito significa PASADO. Y los tiempos se llaman pretérito imperfecto y pretérito indefinido. ¡Saludos!

Gracias, quería decir lo mismo. Pero hay que anotar que en muchas lingüísticas y enseñanzas modernas se usa el término "pretérito" como sinónimo para la forma más usada del pretérito. Llevó mucho tiempo erradicar este error de mi pensamiento cuando empecé a estudiar la filología. También hay varios nombres para las formas del pretérito: al indefenido, por ejemplo, se puede referir también como "pretérito perfecto simple" desde el puncto de vista de la lingüística generativa. Lo más importante es que nos entendemos de tal manera o de la otra. :D Saludos

@@christinar1973 Hola, soy hispano hablante. El uso del FUE demuestra conformidad en una respuesta. "La película FUE buena" = "La película me gustó" El uso del ERA muestra una respuesta vaga, sin mucha seguridad. "La película ERA buena, pero NO me gustó el final". Yo pienso que sería mejor: " El libro ES regular, PERO el final estuvo mejor" I hope this helps you a little more your understanding of the lenguage, from Buenos Aires.

We don't have an imperfect tense in English which is why I was so confused years ago when I studied French at school - the usage of it was never explained. So Brenda, thank you so much for the explanation in Spanish. We do have "use/used to plus bare infinitive" which refers to an event that started, went on for a while and stopped in the past, with either no time frame or a vague one. Eg: "I used to be a policeman in the 1960s". This implies the person was not a policeman in the 1950s or subsequently in the 1970s, whereas the phrase "I was a policeman in the 1960s" does not imply that restriction. Such a comment most likely would be in reference to some event that happened during the particular time frame, and that time frame was possibly only a part of the person's overall career as a policeman. Also, the "use/used to" construct is never used in formal writing (unless quoting the spoken word).

Hola Brenda. Como filóloga, solo un apunte. En español, todos los verbos en pasado son pretéritos. Por tanto, en este vídeo se habla del pretérito imperfecto y del pretérito perfecto simple (pretérito indefinido es un sinónimo de este último, pero se usa con mucha menos frecuencia). Por ello, no es pasado imperfecto y pretérito no es equivalente a indefinido. Un saludo.

@C GJ Eso mismo estaba yo pensando. Hay muchos profesores que los enseñan como "pretérito" e "indefinido". Para mí es increíblemente confuso. Soy una tutora privada para adultos y he tenido estudiantes que han ido a clases en grupo antes y la profesora les ha enseñado "pretérito" e "imperfecto". ¡A mí me vuelve loca porque los dos son pretéritos! Pretérito es pasado. Del mismo modo, personalmente utilizo "indefinido" y no "pretérito perfecto simple" y esto es muy habitual al menos entre profesores de ELE. También tenemos el pretérito perfecto y sería un caos enseñar a los estudiantes "pretérito indefinido", "pretérito perfecto simple" y "pretérito perfecto compuesto". Es innecesario, ya que solo les confundiría. Normalmente se utiliza "indefinido", "imperfecto" y "perfecto". Al enseñar ELE es necesario simplificar lo máximo posible al utilizar términos gramaticales.

@@TheSpanishNotebook eso es ya una elección personal y a mí me parece bien, lo que me parece mal, principalmente porque es incorrecto, es no llamar a todos los tiempos verbales pasados "pretérito". De todos modos, en España al alumnado de educación secundaria en adelante se enseña siempre como "pretérito perfecto simple" y no como "pretérito indefinido". Perfecto por el aspecto perfectivo y simple, por no llevar el verbo "haber" como auxiliar. Creo que "pretérito perfecto simple", de ese modo, da más pistas acerca del tiempo verbal que "pretérito indefinido" (término que no había oído nunca hasta hace pocos meses si soy sincera), pero, de nuevo, esto también es una elección personal.

Con respeto a los eventos...si yo hablara de "las fiestas" en vez de una fiesta, usaria el imperfecto? O sea, estoy hablando de varias fiestas y por eso, no tienen un punto claro de finalidad. Ej: Las fiestas eran divertidas. Me imagino que no se diria, "las fiestas fueron divertidas" porque la frase no ilustra un periodo de tiempo determinado.

¡Brillante pregunta Selene! Ohhhh muchas gracias por preguntar esto!!!! ¡Le diste en el clavo! Si queremos hablar de las fiestas en el plural y las describimos en el pasado vamos a usar el imperfecto porque hace referencia a una generalización, a una rutina (ibas a fiestas seguido) y como tú muy bien lo dijiste, no tiene un período de tiempo específico, entonces definitivamente necesitamos el imperfecto en este caso, por ejemplo, 'mis fiestas de cumpleaños siempre eran muy divertidas'. Sin embargo, 'las fiestas fueron' es también posible. Cuando tú me dices 'las fiestas fueron divertidas' me suena a que te refieres a la Navidad y el Año Nuevo que acaban de pasar (período de tiempo determinado), o a un grupo específico de fiestas que tú y yo sabemos a las que fuiste. Por ejemplo, supongamos que tú te fuiste a Ibiza y que ibas a ir a una fiesta por día por una semana y cuando regresaste me dijiste que 'las fiestas fueron muy divertidas', en este caso es un período de tiempo específico (una semana de fiestas) y por eso el pretérito aquí se puede usar perfectamente. En el tercer caso, la descripción de personas, todos los ejemplos usaron “era”. “Fue” sólo fue utilizado con un tiempo específico (2009-2017). Sin embargo, no sé si “fue/era presidente” es verdaderamente una descripción sino otra manera de decir “sirvió/servía como presidente”. En este caso, sería una acción y no tanto una descripción y así lo entiendo mucho mejor porque tus otros ejemplos de descripción, los cuales dijiste que sólo se usa “era” (era rubio), son verdaderamente descripciones porque usaste adjetivos en estos ejemplos. O sea, para mí, “fue presidente” me suena a mí más como una acción que una descripción. Entonces, mi pregunta es, me podrías dar otro ejemplo de “fue” como descripción pero esta vez con un adjetivo en vez de un sustantivo (presidente, doctor, etc,)? @@selenepasiphae2067 Otra excelente pregunta! para las personas usamos el imperfecto para describirlas en general en el pasado. Pero podemos usar el pretérito si es en un tiempo específico o determinado. Por ejemplo, a) Mi tía Amelia era muy amable, siempre tenía una sonrisa (descripción de personalidad). b) El año pasado fuimos de vacaciones a Cali y nos quedamos en la casa de mi tía Amelia, ella fue muy amable. En el ejemplo a) describo a mi tía y su personalidad en el pasado, en el b) me refiero a cómo nos trató durante ese tiempo que nos quedamos en su casa (no describo su personalidad). Otros ejemplos: Carlos Gardel era un cantante de tango de Buenos Aires (descripción, profesión). - Carlos Gardel fue el cantante de tango más famoso de la historia (período de tiempo específico). Otro ejemplo: cuando era niña era rubia (una característica física mía de joven en el pasado). - En la secundaria fui rubia por muchos años (se entiende que me teñía el cabello). ¿Puedes comprenderlo mejor tal vez ahorita?

@@HolaSpanishWOW! Ok ahora entiendo. DE VERDAD todo depende de un tiempo determinado o específico! Una pregunta más y te dejo en paz :) En muchos libros de gramática española que se usan aquí en los EEUU, se aíslan los verbos: querer, poder, saber, conocer, tener (y tener que) del resto de los verbos en español con respecto al tema del pretérito en comparación con el imperfecto. Explican que estos seis verbos en particular no siguen tanto las reglas de acciones habituales o acciones completas o acciones en progreso como los otros verbos del idioma. Lo que hacen estos textos es explicar la diferencia entre el pretérito y el imperfecto con respeto a estos seis verbos en términos de cambio de significado. Por eso mi pregunta es, según toda esta información fantástica que me has dado, se aplican estos seis verbos particulares a las reglas de uso que has presentado? Muchísimas gracias por toda esta información. De verdad, has aclarado muchas dudas que he tenido por muchos años acerca de estos dos tiempos pasados!

¡Otra brillante pregunta! Voy a hacer una clase específica con estos verbos porque como dices son verbos que cambian el significado cuando los usamos en los tiempos pasados en español. Pero también se puede aplicar lo que vimos en esta clase para estos verbos. Veamos algunos ejemplos. QUERER: cuando era niña quería ser astronauta y viajar a la luna (imperfecto porque describo un deseo en el pasado). - Ayer quise cocinar una paella y se me quemó (pretérito porque es una intención en el pasado con un período determinado (ayer). PODER: Cuando era adolescente podía tocar la guitarra, pero ahora no me acuerdo nada (imperfecto para describir habilidades) - ¿Oye, pudiste hablar con tu jefe la semana pasada? SABER: Pablo era un chico muy inteligente, sabía mucho de matemáticas, economía y filosofía. - Pablo supo inmediatamente que era una mentira. (inmediatamente es el tiempo específico). CONOCER: mi tía conocía a todos los vecinos del barrio - En mis últimas vacaciones conocí España y Francia. TENER: Cuando era niña tenía el pelo rubio. - Esta mañana tuve una cita con el doctor.... Como puedes ver en estos ejemplos, se puede aplicar lo que vimos para estos verbos. Pero sí, también cambian sus significados y los usamos con otro sentido en el pasado. Por ejemplo: ¡Hola! quería cambiar este cheque (es una forma educada de hacer un pedido con el imperfecto). CONOCER, en el pretérito y para hablar de una persona, significa conocerla por primera vez 'ayer conocí a José'.
