Manufacturing footage from the Holden Elizabeth Plant in Elizabeth, South Australia. The now defunct brand produced cars in Australia from 1948 until 2017, the last of which was a red Commodore VF on 20 October 2017 (seen at the end of this video).
The Holden brand was retired by its parent company, General Motors, at the end of 2020.

Absolutely disgusting that the government stopped the production of Australian vehicles and allowed the import of overseas vehicles that destroyed our economy in manufacturing

Unions & Ford Oz/ GMH not listening to customers is what killed car production; also, us taxpayers forking out hundreds of millions of dollars to keep said companies afloat- which the money went to Ford & GM headquarters in the US anyways- wasnt a feasible longterm idea

Holden had themselves to blame for continuing to manufacture a Car NO ONE WANTED anymore...the Commodore...Consumers no longer wanted a big heavy RWD sedan anymore...the market had moved and Holden DID NOT...simple as that

@@user-fx2sh6pk9u The problem was the lax fuel and emission laws which allowed GM and Ford to dump big roadhog trucks into Australia and make more money from that. It was a stitch up. They were never going to invest in a modern updated vehicle that people wanted. Just hoovered up all the cash handouts and left.

A standing salute to all the men and women who worked at the Holden Plant. What Shame on Australian History that such an Icon will never be built again. Lower your head and hand on Heart; - to the Australian Icon; - Holden.

GM allowed Holden to wither and die. The blame game for who killed Holden involves much speculation but it boils down to poor product decision making by GM in the US (rather than letting Australian engineers dictate new model choices), GM wanting to get out of right hand drive production markets and the silly Australian government pulling the subsidy the manufacturer was receiving (much lower in value than subsidies given by governments to other car makers). All these things, along with the GFC killing Pontiac (which Holden was supplying before the brand was ended) destroyed Holden. Holden had a long history of over ninety years of manufacturing. During WW2 it produced a great deal of armaments and other equipment to be used by troops. At one stage there were Holden plants in nearly every state of Australia and the company commanded fifty percent of the market share. Now it is all gone with thousands out of work (because the death of Holden also caused a knock-on effect, killing major parts suppliers as well). The proud Holden logo, the lion with its paw resting on the rolling stone of progress, is now dead. Vale Holden. Any Australian with a heart is saddened by your passing.

Holden closed up shop, Ford close up mfg., Toyota closed up mfg., Mitsubishi closed up mfg. The Australian Government made it too cost prohibitive for any manufacturer to produce cars in Australia, not just Holden. They made cars cheaper to import than to produce in country, even the last Holdens. We can blame GM for Holden, who do we blame for Ford skipping town(and country)? Toyota? Mitsubishi? The problem is that all of those other three had strongholds in other places, in other countries, while Holden did not. As for Pontiac, don't forget that exports continued with the Chevy Caprice PPV and the Chevy SS. As you said, it is indeed a blame game as to who is responsible for the Demise of Holden, suffice it to say there is plenty of blame to go around, and fingers can certainly be pointed in several directions. Regardless, their long storied history and tragic ending is no doubt a triumph to tragedy story, and it leaves a sad and bitter taste in the mouths of many who will always look back fondly and revere the brand and the incredible cars that it produced. RIP Holden, may the lions of your past forever roar in our hearts and on our streets.

Question for anyone who worked there, what is the tune you hear in the background in a lot of Elisabeth footage? It’s like a melody that keeps playing, quite hypnotic!

So sad to think that we had such a first class operation right here in Australia, producing cars that in the end, were as good as or better than anything coming out of Germany, all gone now thanks to GM and the Liberals, and the public who insisted on crap SUVs because fashion. If GM end up going under again and don't get bailed out, I"ll be a happy man.

LMFHO how many people to build one car - about 10 times more than build a Porsche - no wonder it failed and needed billions in federal government subsides - this car SHOULD have been built on a modern production line instead it was being built on something not greatly improved since the early 70s.

Up until 12:27 it's footage of a pre production vehicle that must have been filmed by an engineer as filming/ photography was not allowed in the GM Holden plant unless for official purposes.. footage after 12:27 is of the last car ever produced at the GM Holden plant.

I will forgive you the arrogant comment because you are not Australian. For Australians this video is a historical document as it shows the end of a car company with over 90 years of history and manufacturing in Australia. As to whether or not it was a "premium" brand. I would put the last model Holden Commodore up against any German vehicle for quality and handling.
