Here in New Zealand we had the 4 cylinder Commodore right through until the end of the VK range. During that time, NZ had little in the way of emmission regulations compared to Australia so locally assembled vehicles missed out on any emmission control gear. It meant the Commodore 4 also had an extra couple of horsepower over the Australian model, which made it a little more tolerable from what I am lead to believe. The NZ ones I drove, though still no ball of fire, were actually ok on the flat and round town, and once you were up to open road speed, they would sit there happily, especially with a 5 speed box. Hills were still a bit of a challenge, but they still got you there in the end, and in reality, no more than 10 minutes later than your mates with 2.0 litre Sigmas or Bluebirds. For the VL range you had the choice of either 2.0 litre six or 3.0 litre six. The 2.0 litre was a huge improvemement in power and economy over the 4 cylinder it replaced.

Yeah I agree. It was ok around town. I even took mine Mandurah about 80k from Perth. Had no problem in 5th gear on the open road.

@@AussieTVMusic The 2.0 VL used the RB20E Nissan six. A common conversion to the VL was fitting a turbo RB engine from one of the many factory turbo used Japanese import Cefiros, Skylines or Laurels that we got here.

@@nzmax Damn that would have been nice to have here also.

Looks like Opel Rekord. Maybe they shared parts or two..

Yeah it was from an opel.

Holden built the Commodore from the Rekord plus the longer nose of the Senator ... Plus a whole lot more metal because the Rekord's frame was too weak for Australian roads

That underengineered four was dumped into a body built strongly enough to take a race-tuned V8. So it should've been no surprise to GMH that it was gutless, and also not more economical than the sixes. Who did that song, it's brilliant.

Mine had the in line six blue motor. When it wasn't broken down it was actually a pleasure to drive

My Dad got one new in 1980. I used to drive it a lot. Actually with the 5 speed it was ok cruising in the country.

@@AussieTVMusic Yeah the five speed V8 was the luxury line. My uncle had one for a while. It actually drove really quiet and smooth and was very quick.
