In December of 2001, Aussies across the continent were hit with earth shattering news - Holden Racing Team’s golden boy, Craig Lowndes, was joining Ford’s Blue Oval. Shockwaves rippled through the legions of loyal V8 Supercar racing fans - it was known that you were either team Holden or team Ford, and there was no switching sides. A rivalry deeper than the Hatfield and McCoys, and more bitter than the Red Sox and Yankees, was about to be put to the ultimate test. But how did this deep seated rivalry even begin? Is this the story of gladiators being forged in the crucible of ultimate battle or just two bastions of the same big corporate business propping up car sales with race wins? Has this famed automotive rivalry from down under come to a peaceful conclusion and broken generational racing curses?

Oh and just a note that the Torana in 72 was a 3.3 ltr 202ci straight six and the GTHO was a 351ci powerhouse but the efficiency and lighter car with better braking durability helped to be the Falcon in the little Toranas with only just over half of the engine capacity. Worth checking out some more info on the great little Holden GTR XU1 Toranas to see what they were racing against. 🤙

To add som context to the 1977 Bathurst 1000. Moffat and Bond were a lap ahead of everybody else. because Ickx was an F1 and sportscar driver, he was used to smashing the brakes which were designed for racing. At Bathurst, the cars used the brakes from the standard car, so he wore them out eventually. Bond was the number two driver in the team and was asked by Moffat if he wanted to enter his car to claim the victory. At that time it was very common and legal for the main drivers of one team to enter the race as participants in both cars. They raced their car of course, but if something were to happen to it, then they could switch to the other car and continue on. Peter Brock won two Bathursts by doing that. However Bond refused. When he came to Moffat's ailling Falcon, he knew he had to hold position, even though he was tempted to floor it and leave Allan behind. But he stayed behind, and that's how we got that iconic finish.

Holden commodore was shipped to the u.s. and rebadged as pontiac g8, then gm closed pontiac, and the face lift commodore became the chevy ss. Holden also made the monaro, rebadged as the pontiac gto

Never forget that GM bought Holden because they were competing with gm's euro sales. Essentially holden had it's wings clipped and was kept at arms reach for the next 50 years.

2013 saw the introduction of the Nissan Altima and AMG customer supported Mercedes E55, then in 2014 Volvo joined with the mad sounding S60. The Holden and Ford engines were extremely well developed by that stage and only Volvo was competitive, largely due to the skills of Scott McLaughlin.

Just got done watching and listening...The Commodore name that was used by Holden, was originally used by Opel. At the time, the Opel Commodore was the 6-cyl. version of the Rekord (in the U.K. the Vauxhall versions were the Carlton--which was the 4-cyl. model, and the Viceroy, which was the 6-cyl. model, respectively), and the Holden Commodore started out as the Australian version of the Opel Commodore, but with Holden 6-cyl. and V8 engines, however. THE MORE YOU KNOW (cue the NBC logo)...

19:14 THe ATCC racing was only for absolutely bone stock cars. So yes, literally STOCK racing cars. Also, the change to 1000km is probably because Australia changed from the imperial to metric system as well as from pounds to dollars.

52:15 this is only half correct, when Triple 8 had moved to Holdens, Skaife had been retired from full time driving for a year at that point only doing the enduros with Greg Murphy in 2009, Skaife joined Triple 8 as a co-driver in 2010 and 2011 for the enduros alongside Lowndes where in the 4 races the two shared a car they finished an incredible 4/4 times on the podium, 3 of which were wins and 1 being a 2nd place finish. Since then Skaife has not done any driving in the V8 Supercars.
