I thank my moms from moving us from Baltimore to Northern FL when I was 13 yrs old. It changed my life completely. I learned how to appreciate nature and country living. Went on to college and never looked back. A lot of the hommies I knew growing up in Baltimore are DEAD now or doing BIG TIME. Thanks mom for having the courage, for wanting a better life for me and my sister.

Born and raised in LA and I can’t stand gangs! The cholo side of my family has brought nothing but pain and misery to the other side thats trying to build a future… All gangs give us latinos a horrible rep… I love my chicano culture and the aesthetic, but I can’t back anyone who wants to bang… The worst part is when they don’t even have to go down that route, but still do cause they want to emulate someone.. It’s sad shit… Try picking up a discipline, a skill set or just simply choose something different.. Life is a hell of a lot better when you don’t have constantly look over your shoulder..

Also, in 60's and 70's we walked all over the West side the Jungle, Dorsey, Western Ave, USC, Crenshaw Plaza, Adams, Washington, Leimert Pk, Angeles Vista, Slauson, Rodeo Rd (Obama Blvd.) even after dark but now driving day and night is unsafe especially if you're a blk man under 65 years old. I'm from Oklahoma City. I happened to be in San Diego and took the train to L.A. to go club hopping and experience the night life. One of the first things I did was find a local tour guide/crackhead. Held him down with some Whataburger and his choice candy. He gave me a tour of downtown. Now mind you, I had a bald fade and was wearing Tim's and a brown southpole suit back in 02. I found myself in the middle of a turf war. Just walking through downtown I noticed a couple of guys was following me. I asked my guide whats up with them. he was like nothing they just checking you out, you don't look like you're from around here. So we keep walking. The next time I turn around it was like 20 of them. My instincts started to kick in so I bent the first corner I could. While they couldn't see me after I bent the corner I went into a coffee shop and slid to the floor in one of the booths. About five minutes later I heard them out front looking for me. Someone even popped they head in the door and asked the clerk if they had seen me. The clerk told them no. After about ten minutes the clerk told me it was clear. I had her call me a cab and got the fuck out of there . I won't lie, they had shook.

I was carjacked at gunpoint on Mothers Day (a Sunday) in Burbank, Ca. I'll never forget pushing the button on the steering column to release my key (this was common on early 90's cars), and turning around to a barrel being pressed on my neck. This was a sweet 1990 Mustang 5.0

Ice T talks about LA like it’s still 1990. South Central and Compton are not the war zones they used to be, gang culture has been watered down, violent crime has been trending down for decades, and most “hoods” are now immigrant or working class Latino areas. The Boyz N the Hood era came and went.

Ice T has had one of the most interesting lives… I am long left from the streets 30yrs+ and in my travels I’ve literally ran into ppl that knew him and NONE of the ppl from back then were righteous. 6 in the morning… there was a time when at least juvenile warrants expired & had to be reprocessed. I lived that song more than once to dodge warrants What Ice left out and what seems to be a common theme to do, is not mention that the dope that ALL gangs are moving is coming and has always come from the same ppl. If you survive long enough, keep your mouth shut and move up in street life, there will come a time that you could find yourself sitting on a couch next to someone that you were shooting at and vice versus decade earlier. And you WILL be expected to play nice or cancel Christmas. The streets is really just one big scam

Ive been living in LA for 5 years now. A couple incidents here and there but nothing crazy at all in my opinion: a bar fight, fought some "blood" on the way to getting chipotle, and an altercation after a dude thought I cut him off exiting out of a mall. Thats it. And Im in the hood hood. Brooklyn was way worse then this imo.

It's crazy but this is how it is which is sad. Even if you're a middle-aged minority that never banged, there are 23 different MLB caps to avoid wearing in L.A. when you're a tourist. There's a website that lists them. Because when they pull up on you they're not going to ask you if you're a tourist.

This sounds stupid. Grown man gotta check in with a bunch of thugs. Guess you gotta raise your hand and ask to go to the bathroom to. We as a society give thugs too much thought and power. If I gotta check in with someone you probably don't need to be in that area to begin with. These people you gotta check in with don't own nothing in the community.
