Welcome to one of the world’s grandest cities.
Do you know how Budapest got its name? The city as it exists now is pretty young as cities go - it’ s a spritely 146 years old. Before that, there were three towns here - Buda, Obuda, and Pest, which were unified in 1873. Today, although unified in name, the city is divided into two halves by the Danube river. The western side of the Danube is known as Buda - quiet and residential - where you’ll find historic sites like Buda Castle, and Fisherman’s Bastion.
The Eastern side is known as Pest - it’s lively and modern. It’s the hub of Budapest’s economy and culture - home to the Hungarian parliament, some of Budapest’s most famous thermal baths, Ruin Bars, and everything in between.
I’m here to explore where the boundaries truly lie in this beautiful city. Budapest is unified in name, but divided in nature - the East, the West. The Buda, the Pest. Two distinct identities on opposite banks of the Danube.
Would crossing the river really make the city feel so different?
And which side of the river would get me under the skin of the real, authentic Budapest?
We explore the hills of Buda. The streets of Pest. We meet local people. Visit amazing places, try Hungarian food, and a bit of Hungarian alcohol. We sample the weird and wonderful nightlife. We soak ourselves in the city, and get to the heart of Budapest.
I came here expecting to find a city divided. But what I found was so much greater - and so much grander - than just two parts of a whole.
Our journey begins at Heathrow Airport, and after dropping the car with a handy meet and greet service it was into a lounge for a light lunch before boarding. With unlimited food and free wifi I’d definitely recommend a lounge before a flight, you can book yours with the Holiday Extras app.
Soon enough we were on the plane, and after a two and a half hour flight we touched down in Budapest. To get into town from the airport I would advise pre-booking an airport transfer with Holiday Extras. The door to door service really is the most hassle-free option.
So after a good night’s sleep, we were ready to start exploring the city. Our first stop? The hills of Buda - which meant crossing the river Danube.
Széchenyi Chain Bridge is to Budapest what Tower Bridge is to London, or Brooklyn Bridge is to New York.
It’s still a major crossing for the city. But it’s also an iconic public landmark and a popular item on the tourist checklist.
Designed by Englishman William Tierney Clark, it opened in 1849 and was the first permanent bridge across the Danube in all of Hungary. In World War 2, it was destroyed by retreating German forces during the Siege of Budapest, and only the towers remained. However, it was rebuilt, and it opened again in 1949 - exactly 100 years after its inauguration.
If you’re walking across the bridge from the Pest side towards Buda, like us, you’ll arrive at the base of the Budavari Siklo funicular railway line, which takes tourists up the hill to the castle.
You can purchase tickets at the station, but be warned, in the peak summer season the queue can stretch back quite a way and there’s no shade to speak of. So don’t forget your sunscreen!
Cable cars depart every 10 minutes and take just a few minutes to reach the top.
So, we’ve just taken the funicular up from the Szechenyi Chain Bridge, up to the Castle which is great because it’s boiling hot and it didn’t mean we had to walk it. But it also means we get to enjoy the view from up here as well.
And what an incredible view it is. From this height, the walls of the castle grounds treat you to a spectacular look back across the Eastern side of the city. It’s a fact that’s not lost on Budapest’s tourist population. Every vantage point was packed with people hunting for the perfect photo of the city skyline. Don’t worry though. With a little patience, there’s plenty of opportunity to get yourself a great photo too.

I have been living in Hungary for over 10 years. I host a steady flow of friends and family from the west eager and exited for the opportunity to make the Atlantic jump that many westerners are apprehensive to do. Especially anywhere east of Vienna. There is one common comment that they all make at the end of their stay. 'Damn, I should have planned more time in Hungary'. They wish they could re-arrange the European itinerary to shorten Paris, Rome or Venice. Those are nice cities but the cliche driven tourism is a bit old for travellers who appreciate a REAL cultural and diverse experience that is not just an instagram vacation meme. Leave that for those whose phone front camera lens saw more of the owner in the frame than the actual sights. Budapest... it is hard to explain. Experience it yourself. I live here and still enjoy taking those big red bus tours :)

I met a bunch of young guys and girls and we partied every night. You need locals to show you the local bars and hangouts. I am Hungarian, used to live in Budapest but I left the country a while ago. I visit it every year and it is just getting more and more beautiful. Highly recommended. I have been to most baths in Budapest. My favourite is by far the Lukacs Bath, on the Buda side. It is smaller than the Szechenyi, but much better and cheaper as well and it has a nice atmosphere too. All tourists are told by there agents to go to the Szechenyi, so Lukacs is more for the locals. They have a very beautiful Roman style bath area with the hot pools and a steam room. The hottest pool is 40°C. In Szechenyi I could not find one so hot. It is a shame. If you arrive to the airport look for the BKK office in Terminal 2B. There you can buy all the tickets you would need. - If you buy a Budapest Card (24/48/72 hours) you will get unlimited travel in Budapest, discount from the fees to museums and one free visit to the Lukacs Bath is included. - Or just buy a 24/48/72 hours travelcard. A 24 hour travelcard is cheaper (approx 5EUR) than 6 single tickets. If you have your travelcard already at the airport then the simplest way to get to downtown is to take the 200E bus. It will take you to a metro line that will take you close to most places in Budapest. You will see a 100E bus too. That requires a special ticket approx 3 EUR. Less stops straight to downtown. And there is the obvious Taxi option. Very close to Lukacs Bath is the Margaret Island. Perfect for a walk. You will see that there is a track around the island very popular for runners. If I want to stay cheap then I book Hotel Csaszar almost next to Lukacs Bath, it is cheaper, simpler and nicer than going to an Airbnb. If I want to stay at a very nice and comfy hotel then I book the Thermal Margitsziget Health Spa Hotel. Have fun there!

If you guys stay for a longer period in the city, i recommend buying a city-wide combined transport pass, that allows you to ride any public transportation except for a few that has a touristic status(like the furnicular). It saves you from fiddling with tickets and if you take daytrips, it's valid on trains until the first stop outside the city border (so to go to Szentendre or Gödöllö on the green HÉV trainlines, you only need to buy an extension ticket).

I feel so lucky, that I am living there for about 11 years. There is no way you will be bored in this city. It has everything you want to try and have, such as great food, large amount of options to spend the night (full of bars, especially in the city centre, and all of them has a unique vibe to it, nightclubs for all of the music genres, open parks to just hang out and grab a beer or two with your friends or with locals) and of course culture and attractions.(Be prepared, because there is a lot more than the most famous ones included in the video) There is a museum for almost everything. For the last 11 years I've never been bored in this city and still has lots of things to explore and try out. Overall Budapest is a beautiful, charming and friendly place and definitely worth to visit. It's kinda like a culture shock.. Hard to imagine until you finally experience it with your own eyes. Just be open minded and friendly with the locals and we will show you the Hungarian vibe ;) And of course the video was great! You've got a sub from me. 😎

This is a great video of a beautiful city, excellently presented and full of interest. We went to Budapest for my 60th birthday back in 2013, but on reflection, really did not have long enough there. 4 nights simply does not give you enough time to see everything and you can barely even scratch the surface, but we loved this amazing city, even though it was February and cold. One of the most stunning sights is Budapest at night, by the river. All the buildings and bridges are illuminated and it was an absolutely beautiful sight, There is so much to see and so there, and we will definitely go back for much longer. Thank you very much for some great memories of one of Europe's most beautiful cities.

@@HolidayExtrasTravelGuides As I am living here, I would add: There are tickets for 1, 3, 7 days available, you can buy a Budapest Card, what gives you access to the public transport and also you can visit with that card many sights for free. And there are group tickets for up to 5 people (One day group ticket is around 10 EUR) From the airport bus 100E brings you into the city for 900 HUF (around 2,5 Eur). Also there is bus 200E coming, but it goes only until 9th District, so you need to change Metro line M3, but 200E can be used with the normal tickets. If I remember correctly, you can use any public transport inside Budapest with the tickets, so trains and some of the ships as well inside the borders of Budapest. Buses are blue, trams are yellow, trolleys are red. There is a ticket type what is directly for those, who have to change once during the journey also. Oh, and where metro lines crosses each other, there you can change between them with the same ticket. For more information regarding to the public transport visit www.bkk.hu.

@@darkominator Oh the airport bus 100E is a stealing. Rather overpriced and there are no place for your luggage. Most of the peak arrival times it is so crowded that you have to stand all the way. BKK promised to utilize special, modified buses but modification was some rebadging with fancy stickers and no luggage racks or compartments. It is a shame. Not to mention all the pain when you have to find the way to buy a ticker for it in the vending machine. (At Deák tér terminus there are no personnel to help you. At the airport there are people who will show you the extremely complicated multi-level menu system to get your ticket.)

Quick tip on public transportation: instead of 10 tickets that can easily go missing, buy a 24-hour or 72-hour pass. It doesn't have a limit on travelling, and all you have to do is show it to the guy who controls tickets. Much cheaper option if you're planning to use routes with several transfers. Also, don't be surprised, but Hungarians are not perfect when it comes to English. More and more signs are available in English and most of the time you can get around, but there will be times when communication might become difficult. On the other hand, most of Hungarians will try their best to help you out, either with playing charades or finding someone who can help with translation. In addition, if you have the chance go outside Budapest too. Countryside Hungary is a whole different world, even lovelier ;) Thank you for the great video, I really liked the camerawork and the narration, and I'm wishing everyone who visits our little country a lovely trip~

@@HolidayExtrasTravelGuides I must add that your struggle with our "crazy" pronunciation is really effective an heart warming for locals, you've nailed it most of the time. Reading and pronouncing Hungarian names is a hell for the visitors but there are strict rules that may help. Hungarian is highly phonetic like Italian or Cymraeg-if you know which sound is "fixed" to our bewildering accented and double letters, it turns way easier. And Hungarians really appreciate if you make the effort and give a try to say our words right. (If you won't it is not an evil thing or what but makes your getting-around more difficult. In this case look for young people for help you because they find out easier what you want to say ;)

Me and my sister have been to Budapest nine times and stay for about a month every time we go. You can’t get travel tickets in any station, only the big main stations. Also, they do take euros although forints are their official currency and you’ll save money by having forints. To go to a thermal spa to relax, I’d recommend going to the Rudas baths at non peak hours and also the spa at the hotel Danubius on Margit Island, which is an island in the city by the margit bridge. Also, district 7 the old Jewish quarter is the best place to eat, drink and shop and see the creativity of the people. Some great restaurants are Menza, Köleves, Vintage Garden and Börze.

Some tips: If you travel here to Budapest buy a 24 hour Budapest Pass and you can use all the vehichles here (Bus, Tram, Trolley, Metro, Suburbun Railway, Trains inside BP and BKK Boat services at the workdays). It's better. Like you said two days is less here. Here are lot of places to watch. One suggestion: If you don't want to relax in a crowd baths then use less knows spas like Szent Lukács near to Margit bridge on the Buda side. If you want a less busy places to visit I suggest Hüvösvölgy where Children's railway and Széchényi hill where Cog-wheel train runs, Zugliget where you can use chairlift and at the top of Erzsébet kilátó (Elisabeth Wievpoint) you can see whole Budapest. Margaret Island is also beautifué in the whole day, because it's a quite island in the center of Budapest. There are more traditional foods than Gulyás and Túró Rudi. Beef Pörkölt or Chiken paprikás is also good for second dish and Rigó Jancsi or Dobos torta for dessert :) Thanks for this video. A hungarian :)

As a Canadian who’s just found he’s Hungarian (my great grandma changed her last name when she came here after WW1) this video is extremely interesting. I’ve never thought about Hungary or Budapest really before. I’ve always felt Celtic but my ancestors left Ireland/Scotland hundreds of years ago. Where as my great grandma left in the 1920s. My goal after this COVID crap is to go to Budapest.

They direct all tourists to Szechenyi Baths, which is pretty run down and not kept up to scratch, but there are far better ones in the city, e.g. Rudas, where there is a hot tub at the rooftop and you can watch the city, sitting in the water, also with original features of the old Turkish bath with amazing architecture. The other worth visiting is the Palatinus baths on Margaret island, with several amusement pools, slides, swimming pools, saunas and thermal water. Margaret island is just amazing by itself with lawns and hundreds of years old oak trees, ancient ruins of a monastery, fish pond, Hajós Alfréd Sport swimming pools and other attractions. A tour by the ferry is a necessity- some are regular public transport ferries and you can use your pass on them. Finally the children’s railway - a narrow gauge railway with real engines run by children, running through the Buda hills, stopping at several stations. There’s so much to see. Great video, very knowledgeable, well done

Definitely what I can reccommend yet for a great stay in Budapest is the Margit-sziget (a little island in the Danube located right on the Margit híd (bridge) from where you have also a fantastic - one of the best - views on the both sides of the city Buda and pest and of course the Parlament of Hungary. On this little island are little pedal cars up to 4 or 5 people who can join and you can have a little driving around what is especially in the summer really calming. In the nights (i think on every full hour in the evenings) there is a water fountain play with a lightshow and musik what bring you in a nice mood. Take a bottle of wine if you like there and enjoy the nice feeling of the city! Have a great time there :)

A bit of an extra tip on public transport If you plan to stay for more than a day and you know you'll use the public transportation quite a bit, buy a weekly pass. It's a bit more expensive than 10 tickets, but you don't have to constantly validate it, it's unlimited transport access for a week and it's valid on trains and volán type buses inside the city borders. If you stay for only 2 days, buy a daily pass, it's cheaper than to buy 5 tickets and it's valid for 24 hours on everything as well.

Yeah sadly we budapesters are generally avoiding Szécheni bath during summer/peak times. It is literally a tourist place. If you want to go to more ralixing bath experience, try Rudas bath, located directly at the bank of the Danube on Buda side. It is still doing the traditional "man's day"-"women's day" thing, but there are days which are coeducated, and the best time to go is during the night. Every friday and saturday. plus if you visit Budapest and plan to explore the city, don't buy the 10 ticket bundle for local transport. You can buy 24hour ticket or 2 day tickets at every wending machine or even tourist tickets. You can pay there with cash, visa or mastercard.

It's funny how everyone says paprika is the base of hungarian cuisine (It is), when it came from america. FYI Hungary is 500 years older than america (compared to discovery). As a hungarian I can't even imagine what our ancestors ate. Every traditional food we know now needs paprika. Also, pro tip: Never go to a spa before a night out. Thermal water will get you exhausted. After a good "bath" it is advised to get a good sleep. You will feel energized and well rested.
