I have been caravanning for 22yrs and never checked my caravan wheel torques but 4yrs ago I had a wheel come off which wrote off the caravan and I was only doing 20 mph. I was heading to the lakes and was only 10 minutes from a motorway and dread to think what would have happened if I had been on it. I now check my caravan wheel torques every time I leave my drive & leave a site. It may be overkill but only takes a few minutes.

Hi Martin, Yes the nose weight, our front chest of drawers adds nearly 14kg ! And I don’t know what I’m going to do when the Calorlite runs out as we don’t have a safefill stockist close by. Our main gas use is for shower water heating together with electric for quicker heat up time. It looks like you’re looking forward to the getaway 😀…. Best regards to you both, Rob & Gail 👍

Hi Rob and Gail. I sometimes think Bailey built a few series of vans without thinking about the nose weight, with nothing in the van I would say it’s near to or if not over 100kg, poor thought out design in my opinion. Maybe that’s why they did away with front lockers completely. It’s been a good van but don’t think Bailey will be at the top of my list when we eventually upgrade. Definitely looking forward to getting away soon. Hope you are both well, thanks for watching, Martin

We are living in our UK Swift Caravan travelling around the South Island, NZ. When we first left we weighed 1994kg, after 3 months on the road we went home for a couple of weeks, had a good clear out and lost just over 100kg, wish I could do the same as quick 😂 you really do carry a lot of stuff that you just don’t need… 👍

Now that sounds like a good caravan trip! If you are living in it I would imagine you would need more stuff, but like you say always good to have a good clear out! Thanks for comments, enjoy your travels, Martin

I watched in horror as our friends car was being thrown around by the caravan during a major snake on the motorway before the caravan eventually turned over. It certainly brought home to me how important the nose weight and loading the car and caravan correctly really is. After that incident I always ensured that the car was as heavy as possible and put as much weight as I could in the rear footwells and seats. The lighter things like tables and chairs were put in the boot. Anything that had to go in the caravan was placed over the axle and moved slightly forward or backward to get as near as possible to the correct. nose weight. The incident taught me haw powerful the caravan was while snaking and the heavier the caravan the worse the snake will be..

That must have been awful to watch. Getting the right balance is key to a safe tow, one thing in the wrong place can make a big difference in stability. So many people don’t bother with weights and just chuck stuff in, some people even think it’s a joke when I get the nose weight gauge out and I’ve only seen one person do it on a site before leaving. Safe travels, thanks for watching.

Hi Martin, I see that you use Tyre pal ! Can you tell me if you had specific valves to enable using Tyre pal or do you just need the sensor valve caps? The reason I ask, is that when we changed our caravan last year, the dealer said we couldn't transfer the Tyre pal to our new van as they were special valves fitted in the Tyre!
@TheCaravanNut
@TheCaravanNut 11 ай бұрын
Some caravan manufacturers fitted TPMS sensors to the valves, they were in built and lasted about 3 to 5 years depending on usage. You couldn’t replace them, pointless really in my opinion. You can buy the Tyrepal sensors and head unit as a package, the sensors will work if the in built ones have stopped working. Hope that helps, cheers

is your caravan nose heavy Martin as ours have 6k bottle spare tyre. usually tools in front boot and still have trouble just to get weight up to 85kg on tow hitch
@TheCaravanNut
@TheCaravanNut 11 ай бұрын
We don’t have much behind the axle normally so end up moving stuff back. Also make sure it is on level ground before checking, it makes a difference. The nose weight of the van with nothing in it was near 100kg! Bailey for you! Cheers

how do you check tyre pressure on tyre pal we have tyre pal but don't know how to do it usually wait until we are setting off and it usually comes to life about 3mins down road
@TheCaravanNut
@TheCaravanNut 11 ай бұрын
If you want to check the pressures when not moving I usually remove the sensors to check. Or you can flick the sensor a couple of times to wake it up. Cheers

hi Martin are you off abroad this year or are you staying local, i think the price of ferries this year is a bit of a rip off which is a shame as it use to be quite cheap to to to France with the Caravan
@TheCaravanNut

We are staying in the UK this year. Like you said it’s getting expensive to take the van abroad these days with ferry prices, extra breakdown cover, fuel and general cost of food. Hopefully will return to France one day with the van. Thanks for comments and watching
