I'm Amelia, the singer for City of Tears. Hollow Knight came out 7 years ago, so I'm feeling a bit nostalgic myself, and I can't say how much it means to read all your comments. My only regret with this game is that I'll never be able to experience it fresh ever again. I'll never again have that moment where I first step into the City of Tears and hear the drops of the blue lake with the haunting melody and just be in a state of wonder. Coming here really showed that Hallownest was more than just some tunnels that some bugs built. It was a kingdom.

*Spoilers for people who don't wanna know* If you get a regular key, you can open the Pleasure House in City of Tears (it's to the left of the King's Station Stagway). Inside, there's a ghost named Marissa who used to be a singer. If you sit down and listen to her sing, she sings the vocal parts of this song.

Winged Dragon i always loved the irony within the games dialogue from things like lore tablets made before the total destruction of the kingdoms civilization, how everyone believed they were finally safe again before the radiance hit a second time and everything crumbled, and you could even say some characters had their ‘base instincts redeemed’ in the case that small signs of cannibalism can be found within the city of tears due to how trade from outside of the city was not allowed. Damn, playing hollow knight is like reading a book from the 19th century with strong metaphors relating to the society they lived in. I hope its loved equally as much in the future.

Mauz yeah. Its a thing that not many people talk about, but i feel like the poggy thorax was one of the most tragic characters. They spoke in a way that sounded like they couldnt trust any one, mostly because in life the people around them turned on them and ate them. When you realise that although these characters are bugs, they are also human mentally, so it makes it more fucked up.

It's sad dream nailing ghosts. But I'm still unsure as to whether it is more just to dream nail them or to leave them be. Sure it's sad when Marissa stops singing. However, leaving her (and any ghost) eternally trapped and confused in a single moment of their life seems almost selfish. Especially because you have the power to set that memory free. The grave keepers loss of purpose when you empty the glade of hope and Marissa's confusion as she wonders why she no longer has an audience... These examples make me pity the ghosts and feel that they deserve to be set free.

People say Quirrel’s death is sad, but I think he got the happiest ending of all the characters. He got to experience the wonders of Hallownest for the first time twice, something everyone in this comment section wants. Not to mention he’s content when you talk to him. He’s not sad or scared, he’s blissful. He got to see the beauty of the city twice for the first time, the Blue Lake twice for the first time, the horrors of Deepnest and the great vantage of the Crystals Peaks. He got another adventure. He’s forgotten the first time, just like the Knight, and just like the Knight got to see it all again with fresh eyes. I think that’s beautiful. “All tragedy erased... I see only wonders...”

This music is very conflicting. On one hand, it's really beautiful: it tells a story of what Hallownest once was. On the other, it's really sad and melancholic: it tells about the kingdom's tragid fall. And finally, it's somehow very grotesque: not in itself, but when I hear this in the background while I'm nailing my way through lots and hordes of noblebugs, it just reminds me of how all the riches in the world can't save you. Even with all the wealth in the world, you're still just as liable to die to a sword or a plague as anyone else. Am I doing them a service as I relieve them of this world and let their souls depart for the next, or am I a monster as I slaughter frightful creatures en masse? Thankyou, Team Cherry, truly.

literally just dark souls edit: i dont mean that the game isnt artistically pretty or this level isnt, but the "ancient kingdom that is in ruins but you can tell it was once immensely beautiful and cant be recovered so its sad and beautiful" is Dark Souls Level Design 101. The city of tears is nice but it's no new concept, though I quite liked that it's always raining case in point, new londo, anor londo, duke's archives, oolacile, heide's tower of flame, cathedral of blue, drangleic castle, every ds2 dlc castle, lothric castle, grand archives, irithyll of the boreal valley, the ringed city, the cathedral of the deep, farron keep... miyazaki said himself something along the lines of, when he's trying to design for dark souls, the vision is "beauty that has been lost and can never be recovered, but there's traces of it" or such
@psycake
@psycake 5 жыл бұрын
@@Ferelcapox7 That may be true, but to me, none of the Dark Souls-games captured that feeling that Azur Templar described, nearly as perfect as Hollow Knight. For one, this track really helps to deliver those emotions. In Dark Souls, I don´t feel conflicted, because the atmosphere feels mostly bleak with no beauty in it (that may be because of the lack of music outside of bosses). I also think the enemy design in Hollow Knight is better, because the enemies still have some cuteness to them, I can see who they were whereas in Dark Souls, the enemies mostly look disturbing and lost ther former selfs completely. So even when both games wanted to give as the same feelings, only Hollow Knight succeeded to me, Dark Souls only gave me part of those emotions.

@@Ferelcapox7 Dark Souls scares me on a design stand point, Hollow Knight was inviting. Games that have an amazing, emirsive atmosphere and engaging gameplay are always my favourites. I'm so glad that everyone shares the same sentiment as me with this place. I guess I'll dump my experience here. I got the game on the 22nd of December, 2019. Very late, I know. Before then, I knew nothing about the game other than what the main character looked like. No screenshots, no lore, nothing. Hell, I didn't even see the trailer for it. I just got it because someone else said it was good. I really just played it nonstop after doing so. I did all the optional stuff I could find and moved on as quickly as possible. I never really stopped in many places other than taking breaks. This place changed that. I'll remember it all too well. Putting that crest in the statue and advancing further and further. When the music kicked in, I noticed it more than any of the other tracks. However, I carried on as normal. It was when I got to the bench with Quirrel that I slowed down. I thought about where I was. I payed attention to the track playing and stopped. Sitting on the bench, I took it in. I was sitting there for 40 minutes. That isn't a hyperbole. All that time of playing the game without slowing down, without thinking very much about it all... This was the place that changed that mindset. 40 minutes of peacefulness. 40 minutes of absolute surrealism. The pinned comment sums it up perfectly. I just want to experience that feeling again. That feeling I've only experienced twice ever, including then. Just one more time. Thank you, Team Cherry. Here's toward the future. P.S. Thank you as well, endangered, for being a huge contributor to the wiki. It helped a lot when I wanted to learn some stuff I just... missed in my playthough.

It's incredible that the environment and the music create so many emotions in me. Even see in the monument to the Hollow Knight made me sad when I read it, even if I didn't know what happened. It was honestly while listening to this that I finally pieced together what I could describe as a "point" of hollow knight. Keeping in mind a few things, first, while I love this game to bits, it suffers from a severe case of "ambigioutis" as Joseph Anderson calls it, which has been in vogue since Dark souls. This means putting together an artistic thrust of the game will be slippery. Second, I have yet to play through the Go dlc, so yeah. Finally, I don't remember it all, so I might not mention everything. Hollow knight is in a genre of games about what comes after the end. I wouldn't exactly call them "post-apocalypse" as that invokes to many things that don't quite match these games asthetics. Perhaps "post collapse"? who knows. Games, and it is basically only games that explore this space, about characters scuttling around the long dead ruins of a world they have never known. Never really known. Almost always born of those worlds, but never having inhabited them when they truly were themselves. Hollow Knight focuses on those characters. Those small people left behind in the wake of the collapse. What happens next? What are we, as people, to do after all is said and done? After the collapse? After the great civilizations, the ones that we right now live in, come apart, and the world, as we know it, has come to an end. What happens, when in the generic fantasy plots in which the plucky adventurers have to save the world.... fail? Hollow knight is an exploration of that. Of how our great and mighty civilization can and probably will come to an end, and what is left? There is damage, to be sure. There are things to be cleaned up in the wake of it. But ultimatly... life goes on. This is explored in the mantis village. A "savage" tribe, who the colonial powers of Hallow Nest would consider their inferiors like the Europeans did for africa, but who nonetheless outlived their supposedly superior rivals. It is in Quirrel, who has seen both, and yet neither. Who has lived two lifetimes, and remembered so little. Who felt wonder at finally finding where all that damn rain comes from in the city of tears. He is a bug satisfied with where he's been, what he has done, and that which he has gotten to wonder at. It is of the nail masters, the last of their kind, passing on their teachings to but one more student. And finally, it is of the kings children. The vessels and hornet, having to fix the mess of that which already brought about the collapse, and finally finish it off so it cannot wreak more havoc on the world. To purify it so that those coming after have, at the very least, a fresh start. It is a story about what happens after the end.

A friend recommended me this game and I downloaded it to pass the time while we're all quarantined due to coronavirus. He told me it was very good, but I didn't expect it to awaken so many Feels. When I got down to the city for the very first time and heard the rain and the music I sat besides Quirrel and stood there for like five minutes, just taking all the amazement in.

Latios Eon Yes. This is a thought that I don't think enough people really sit and think about. When you hear this music, the Old Stags recollection of the bustling Queen's Station, the glorious White Palace with its 5 Knights, it all hits you that this broken world you explore was once a mighty kingdom. It really does push you to become the vessel, to consume the Radiance with your void, just for the faint chance that this kingdom may become whole again. Hallownest's fall is one of the few events that truly made me sad in a game

You know, I wish I could’ve experienced the wonders of Hallownest, by myself. As I played throughout Hollow Knight, I experienced the game with my two very best friends. Together we played, always. All having our ups and downs, my friends dying to Hornet countless times while the Mantis Lords beat me relentlessly. Exploring every inch there is awaiting for me to find, just to get jumped by a Dirt Carver or Primal Aspid and rage as I die. My friends voices drowned out what I should’ve been thinking, what I should’ve been to listening to the entire time. When I first stumbled upon the City of Tears, I thought nothing much of it other than, “wow, neat.” It took me quite a long time before I began to really appreciate and wonder about this vast place, this vast game. I’ve always wondered, and shall always wonder, how this place looked. How the entire kingdom of Hallownest looked like, when it was not in ruin. I imagine the many bugs, coming and going on the Stagway Stations, marching through the Pilgrims Way just to find this place. Imagine for a second, how alive this place used to be. And now look at it. Dead, forgotten, locked away from everyone. Depressing, is it not? But for some reason, I enjoy it. Despite my hatred for this game sometimes, raging at platforms or being plain terrible with combat mechanics. Suffering through the damned White Palace just for the true ending, so I can end the suffering of so many who reside in this place, despite them all just being lines of code in the end. I shall never forget this game. I shall never forget this place. I shall never forget these friends I’ve made, both existent and not. I shall never forget these memories. Thank you, Team Cherry.

@RoyalStarlord Short answer, no. Basically, if you pause the video you will notice that the raindrops are long vertical lines. Surprising as it may be, the attractive force of water is actually enough that in real life, raindrops are actually nearly perfect spheres, not even the "drop" shape we generally imagine. Thus, any answer about how big droplet would actually be would have to assume whether the drop size is based in the horizontal width, the vertical width, or something in between. Any answer to this would have to involve some form of input from the observer as a judgement call, and thus there cannot be an objective size. Without an objective size of the raindrop in game, we can't compare to a real world raindrop, and thus we cannot determine the size of Hollow Knight.

I dreamnailed her on purpose. As a thank you for the melody, I gave her the eternal rest her lingering soul yearned to keep. Her singing was a solemn cry for help. To be loved or to be at peace. I couldn't keep her waiting after bearing witness to that beautiful harmonic cry. For those few seconds, I realised...I wasn't inside the city. It was outside me. My body, an empty husk yet to be filled, had suddenly acknowledged its own emptiness. But as it learnt of Empty, it learnt of Full. Full was curious of Empty, wanting to enter the depths of its thoughts and dreams, unapologetic and violent with its efforts, while Empty hadn't known curiosity nor concern. Like the Tear that touches the horns of the appointed vessel that eternally stands at centre, the City has touched the mind of the empty husk, with its essence running down from the brim of the mass, leaving a translucent trail in its decent that dissipates into nothing the eye can see. A Tear of the City has passed through me, a Tear of the lingering voice that cries. And with its Tear, I raise my nail. 'Farewell.' The utterance of concern, to bid another in their journeys. The act of saying goodbye. As the Tear connects to the ground, I connect her to her dreams. The echoes now invaded by impenetrable silence, the "emptiness" returned. But the sound is only too dim.

My first blind appearance in city of tears was from deepnest. I fell down from fungal wastes and couldn't find a way out. After few hours of several phobias kicking in and pushing through the gross deepnest, i killed the boss and got the tram pass. I got to the ancient basin and somehow got up to the city. Hearing this song and rain i felt relived. I overcame my fears of these nasty bugs and spiders and got to the famous city of tears. My dumass thought you couldn't get in from the fungal wastes so i got to the city really late. I got through crystal cave, ancient basin and deepnest with unupgraded nail. I think i'm in the minority of the players, because i dont think many people got through the majority of the game before the city :d. Still, this piece of art is too good. I love this song

It may not be a good trade off to some people, but for me being able to finally wear a skirt, or a dress without anyone hating you is just, it feels wonderful. Hopefully i see this again in 3 years where im finally in senior high, I'll hopefully be in the art school that i want to go to, and be fully out without my parents being there to hate me for it. I enjoy this music because the city itself is a vast contrast to the rest of hollownest, yet it shares many similarities. We see structures of what once was, of what could have been and what didn't happen. We see the rise and fall of hollownest as we journey through it. The city of tears is beautiful because it shows us how great, how majestic, how awe-inspiring the heart of hollownest is. But like the rest of the fallen kingdom, it follows the same fate, with the noblebugs desperately clinging to their wealth, not believing that the pale king could fall. It greatly contrasts a lot of hollownest, the tunnels and the creatures. The fungal wastes and greenpath are far too priminal and kingdoms edge is too dangerous. So they built a city where the sky cries and mourns the loss of the hollow knight. Yet, it is similar as it slowly fades out of existance like Dirtmouth and the crossroads, succumbing to waste and ruin. This haunting song emphasis this. The piano plays a simple tune that soothes our mind and relaxes us, enticing us to enjoy what the city has to offer. The vocals warm us as it comforts and relaxes us as it describes what the City had to offer. Yet, these very same vocals and piano also tell the story of what is to come. Slow and sad ruin, not a glamours battle nor an earth-shattering event. Plague and time ended hollownest as their defenders and their king fell, and the rest of hollownest are following suit, yet the city is the final reminder of what was.

*Hitchhiker's guide to Hallownest, Page 7* The capital of Hallownest, the City of Tears stands within a massive cavern, the largest in Hallownest, with stone towers stretching up towards the ceiling. A constant downpour of water leaking in from an underground lake above the city gives the whole place a forlorn feeling. The corpses of the inhabitants still walk around their capital, and the guards seemingly remember their training, and are quite dangerous. However, the average citizen is of little threat, and will most likely flee from you on sight rather than engage. In one tower is the soul sanctum, a large laboratory build to study the nature of soul and the arcane. Now however, it seems the scholar's went mad on their quest to obtain a "pure focus" and fell to the infection just like everyone else. In another can be found the watcher's spire, home of Lurien and highest tower of the city. Lurien was apparently given the task of watching the city from above for threats and recording any odd activity in his journals, which were relayed to the authorities. However, when the infection broke out Lurien took his place among the three dreamers and faded into eternal slumber, his last words still etched on a tablet in his study. His sleeping form is mostly unguarded, the knights who were tasked with defending him having fallen themselves. In a third can be found the King's Station, largest of the stag stations and twin to the Queen's Station in the Fungal Wastes. Splitting the cavern is a massive wall that seals the city away from the rest of the cavern, and inside the wall is the Tower of Love, a storage facility built to house all manner of creatures from around the kingdom. It was run over by a strange, kindly being with a mysterious past, and their upbeat and carefree wife. Now however, the wife is gone and the Collector wanders the Tower laughing to themselves and carelessly stuffing poor creatures into jars, neglecting to nourish them until they either starve or die from thirst. I would have investigated further, but I feared being trapped in a glass container for the rest of my life, so I left before they noticed me.

I remember it very clearly ,it was near half past seven, and I was playing Hollow Knight on my TV. The day before, I had read about a place called "the city of tears", but I didn't know where exactly it was located in-game. I remember rushing through the platforming section on the Fungal Wastes, because I thought the Coliseum of Fools was there (The image in the map kinda looked like a coliseum to me) . But when I reached the statue of Hegemol and the door closed shut behing me, I knew this was no coliseum. I continued through the passageway, until I reched the bench where Quirrel was. The music. The visuals. The atmosphere. I stayed in that bench for 10 minutes, listening and watching the rain fall, and the only thing I could master to say: Woah...

The City of Tears is my favorite place in a video game. It’s been several years since I first played Hollow Knight during the summer following my freshman year of high school, and I keep coming back to this video to help me sleep. That’s not a slight on Larkin at all, It’s because I am in love with rain; It soothes me. When I was younger the rain themes from Animal Crossing, Pikmin 3, and Terraria were always in my head, so when I got to The City of Tears, the quiet and towering blue capital with never-ending rain, it felt a little like home. I’m in college now, and the delicate, comfortingly sorrowful instrumentation of The City of Tears continues to enchant me.

I like how the music vocal changes and get louder with where you are in the city

I run a travel company and have been to over 100+ countries. During COVID this all came to a sudden stop. I played hallow knight during this odd moment in my life where I couldn't move. Now that I'm back on the road, I listen to this track it brings me back to that moment. Sad, yet so impactful and beautiful.

I just love hearing the sound of rain falling. Wether it be in real life, or games. But the musical accompaniment with the rain falling, makes me feel as though, everything will be OK. No matter how wrong they get, it will be OK in the end.

For me, personally, the moment when you enter the City of Tears, the rain starts falling and the music starts playing can only be compared to the one in Symphony of the Night when you enter the Anti-Chapel and Lost Painting starts playing or when you enter the Royal Chapel and Requiem for the Gods starts playing.

I never truly got to experience the city of tears bc I used a tutorial since I was scared of this new place. But then a couple minutes in, I decide “screw the tutorial” and I travelled away from the point of interest I was looking for. I wasn’t paying attention to what I was doing, and suddenly I saw Hornet, a great statue before me, and a cutscene began to unfold. I barely got a moment to watch since I wasn’t paying enough attention, but I still remember that moment of wonder, of discovery. I also remember my second Quirrel encounter in the city of tears. I had been traveling quite a bit up the Watchers Tower, and was running low on health. I hadnt seen Quirrel in quite some time, and was a little sad and really wanted to see him. And suddenly, there he was, looking over he city. I sat with him for a bit, looking at the view. It was nice. A moment of peace before I immediately got my ass kicked by the Watcher Knights. I came back a while later, after I left Quirrel at the Blue Lake. It didn’t feel the same. It was far more melancholic without my friend. I miss him.

To play this song perfectly 1. Prepare the orchestra 2. Wait for rain...

I don't know why, but the Knight is so adorable for me when he looks up like in this video... Empty Vessel but in this moments it looks like he has feelings... He's interested, he's curious about what he sees!

I dont want to feel like all the people in comment section, but I know I will. I feel this way about the Witcher 3... Looking back at the first time experiencing it all and knowing youll never have that sensation again. Im currently sitting on the bench with Quirrel and have been for a good 20 minutes now. This game is so beautiful and Im just now exploring it

Bro this song perfectly in bodies a feeling I can't really describe. It creates this picture and feeling of a beauty in all things. even though this city met it's end and there was suffering to be had there is a beauty in it. Nature is unbiased but in the cruel unforgivness it brings there is beauty. The suffering of a great city creates this beautiful tomb to use. Yes it's a place of sadness but there is beauty in this sadness and all human emotion. The people are gone but new life emerges and creates itself a home to repeat the cycle again. I don't no why humans see beauty in something like this. Maybe it's a way of dealing with the futility and meaninglessness of our own lives or something else but damn it this song is so stupidly beautifully. It invokes beauty in contrast and I can't help but cry.

I wish I hadn’t spoiled Hollow Knight for myself pbefore I first played it. Also, when I left the lift, I fell off it, hit the spikes, respawned, and the ‘City of Tears’ pop up dissapeared immediately. Knowing I’ll play it now, I intend not to spoil one second of Silksong to myself. Thank you, Team Cherry, Thank you.

Saludos.
