In this tutorial I show you how to make a hollow jungle themed egg, using polymer clay, a blown (empty) egg-shell and white vinegar It is part of the Exotic Botanicals collaboration, with Sandy Huntress and Teresa Pandora Salgado. Their fantastic videos are listed below:
Keepsake Crafts by Sandy Huntress - • Exotic Botanicals-Flor...
Teresa Pandora Salgado - • Complex Caning Hints, ...
My egg is baked on a tile - plus zig zagged card, or polyester batting (of the heat safe type used in furnishings).

I tried another egg project with a styrofoam egg and after decorating and baking it you just put a couple drops of acetone in hole onto the Styrofoam and it dissolves it instantly! You pull just a little piece out that's left over. Made my life so much easier with same results! Lol I love your videos!

Excellent! I really like this :) Thanks Val. You could probably speed up the reaction without damaging the egg by gently(!) heating the vinegar + egg. I wouldn't boil it because of the vinegar fumes, and the egg may get bashed around. But for those impatient people like me, a little judicious heating in a pan should give you a faster dissolved egg. Signed Ex-Chem teacher who ran lots of Science Club experiments like this :)

As long as the clay doesn't get too warm and go soft, it might be OK... Hmmm... xx
@janetmcbride165
@janetmcbride165 7 жыл бұрын
Just tried it with a curved bit of baked scrap: YES it does go soft, I did boil the water admittedly, did not leave it beyond coming up to the boil, but dumped it into the sink... and it was easy to manipulate it back into a flat piece. No good for the egg, you'll ruin it. Has anyone else tried to reshape baked clay using water? It would be much quicker that reheating in an oven, has anyone had any problems reshaping this way?

Cola experiment an epic failure. The egg has become weaker and the cola has turned it brown, but that's about it. The soda had no effect on the egg. Vinegar wins but scent wise not so much!

That's beautiful, Val! I wonder if you covered the egg with Donna Kato's Repel Gel before adding the clay if you could then just break the egg out of the inside rather than having to dissolve it?

Another grand video! I have been meaning to try this ever since watching your last hollow egg tutorial! If you completely baked the framework instead of just doing a partial bake, would it be strong enough to hold up without the egg underneath? I was just thinking that it would be easier, and faster, to dissolve the egg if there was less clay on it.
@UnrulyHousewife
@UnrulyHousewife 7 жыл бұрын
I think it would hold up as a cold frame but then, if you wanted to decorate it, I'm not sure it wouldn't sag in the heat, second time around. If you experiment please let me know! xx

Thank you Val, your egg is lovely.. Fascinating how the shell disappears. Val as we both live in the UK I wondered if you would be kind enough to tell me which oven you use to bake the polymer clay please. I'm really having problems with my main oven which fluctuates terribly so have used my halogen oven but it's not doing the job either. Thank you for your help and great videos. I always learn something new and have a laugh too. Blessings

I think you'd need polymer clay sweetie. It has to be strong and (after baking) it has to stand up to a soaking in vinegar overnight (to dissolve the egg shell).

Hi Val, I hope you're well. I need some advice please. I have made an a4 sized fairy door that's almost an inch thick in places (where some of the flowers are) I'm new to polymer clay and I'm not sure how long to bake it for. I've put a lot of time and effort into it and I'm frightened of ruining it. I normally bake things at a lower temperature then what it says on the pack so I don't burn them but I'm worried about going the other way and it ending up too fragile. can you advice me on how to bake it please as I trust your judgement (-: (Also I'm going to tent it after seeing a tutorial on it, so that should help too)
@UnrulyHousewife
@UnrulyHousewife 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Tracey, sorry I took so long to reply but I was asking around (I have never baked anything that big myself). First thing I'd say is pre-heat the oven and use an oven thermometer. NEVER bake at too low a temperature as the clay will not be cured properly. If the temperature creeps up a little bit it doesn't matter, so aim for at least as hot as they recommend. Baking on a tile is a good idea for flat things, it keeps a more even temperature and sticks them nice and flat. Tenting with foil is a great idea. Don't start timing until the thermometer shows the minimum temperature you want (after you put your piece in). Bake for AT LEAST an hour, some people said they'd leave it for two. I'd personally leave it in for maybe 90 mins. Light colours may darken a bit, clear clay might yellow but hopefully the tent will prevent that. Keep checking the thermometer, to watch out for big spikes or drops. You could maybe include a "stick" of similar thickness clay and test that once everything has cooled. GOOD LUCK! xx
@traceymarshall7613
@traceymarshall7613 7 жыл бұрын
hi Val. thank you for getting back to me. (-: that's brilliant advice, I really appreciate it. I made the door on a tile so it can go straight in the oven. I got an oven thermometer after watching one of your videos. I always thought that if I baked at a lower temperature but for a longer time that I wouldn't burn things...I'm a big worrier lol...so I now know not to do that anymore. I've learnt a lot of things from you, so a big big thank you for them. I will let you know how I get on. xx

I haven't tried it but I've been told you can use styrofoam and then melt it in, er, I think it was rubbing alcohol. I thought about trying it but I didn't fancy the possible fumes.
@janetmcbride165
@janetmcbride165 7 жыл бұрын
Rubbing alcohol does not dissolve styrofoam. There are powerful solvents that do, but they are very flammable and you need to be very sure you know what you're doing to use them. And the fumes are decidedly unpleasant. And they probably destroy polymer clay too.

Just curious, how long does it take for the vinegar smell to dissipate ? Thanks :) xx
@UnrulyHousewife
@UnrulyHousewife 7 жыл бұрын
I have no sense of smell (I have a video about it in the "My Life" playlist somewhere, the condition is called "Anosmia"). This means that the entire process smells like nothing to me - it may as well be water LOL. However, the egg (I'm told) does retain the vinegar smell for a few days and then it gradually disappears entirely.
