@acuerdox
@acuerdox 8 жыл бұрын
what their music need is melody. sure they are playing it safe, but if you tell a composer to make risky music what is he supposed to do with that? you tell the composer, make music with some strong melody just like in the classics. like Mozart and so on.

Man, It's a shame this channel officially ended. I've come back to watch their videos numerous times since the announcement that Every Frame A Painting was over. This was one of the most impressive and distinct KZfaq channels around, with informative talent which up-stood most shows available on ANY Television network. I mean both the Dracula and Stardust cues are clearly heavily influenced by Holst's Mars from the Planets Suite. No music exists in a vacuum, there is no truly 'original'.
@RealQwaqa

It sounds almost identical to Mars by Gustav Holst. It's a part of his Planet suit. It is often featured in movie trailers. To the point that Venture Bros. made fun of it back in Season 2.

I think temp music can be a great argument to why scores should be made before editing. So the editor can work with the official score instead of temp music. If The social Network wasn't a good enough argument.
@ibrews
@ibrews 8 жыл бұрын
actually The Social Network is a great example of why you should trust the composer. Aaron Sorkin wrote a bunch of needle drops into the script, but luckily, David Fincher (in all his wisdom) trusted Trent Raznor. The final music is TOTALLY different than what was intended, and its infinitely better. Directors/writers take note!
@paulstaker8861
@paulstaker8861 8 жыл бұрын
iBrews Ok. Maybe I've confused you. What you wrote doesn't seem to be in opposition of what I wrote.
@ibrews
@ibrews 8 жыл бұрын
It does insofar as the music composed was written in response to what was in the script and what was filmed, so the music for The Social Network would not have turned out the way it did if the score was made ahead of time. So my argument is its okay to have temp scores, but directors need to get over themselves and let their composers take a risk.
@paulstaker8861
@paulstaker8861 8 жыл бұрын
iBrews Strange. From the making-of I remember they said the music was in production before and separately to filming. Doesn't that mean it was made ahead of time?
@themissingpatient
@themissingpatient 8 жыл бұрын
Fincher began using Nine Inch Nails Ghosts I-IV as a temp score when they began editing. He then decided to just call Reznor and just ask if he would be willing to score the music himself. They went back and forth for quite a while before Reznor made the choice to just have the music scored and ready by the time post-production began, which is what they did for The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and Gone Girl. Much of the music used for The Social Network were re-workings of tracks on Ghosts I-IV.

Not to mention that asking a composer to mimic someone else's song is never going to result in inspired work. If I was Danny Elfman and Tim Burton had the nerve to ask me to do a knock-off of someone else's song, I'd be pissed. I'd be like, "Really, bro? After Pee-Wee? Beetlejuice? Edward Scissorhands? Freakin' BATMAN? After I made the music that made your movies what they are for the past 20+ years, you're going to ask ME to rip off Gregson-Williams? NEVER AGAIN."

This gives me so much respect to directors like Christopher Nolan. IIRC, he always tells Hans Zimmer to make the track first only telling him a certain situation or theme to guide Zimmer. In Interstellar, Nolan first asked Zimmer to create something that fit along the theme of a father and child relationship without giving away the plot or genre of the movie. What we got out of it was some amazing soundtrack.

Quentin Tarantion's choices for music are so great. That's because he uses mostly existing music that is not written for movies.
@everyframeapainting
@everyframeapainting 8 жыл бұрын
Actually, it's the other way around. He mostly uses existing music that is absolutely written for movies. The scores for Kill Bill Vol. 1 & 2, Inglourious Basterds, and Django are FULL of Ennio Morricone, Luis Bacalov, etc. cues from spaghetti westerns. I remember there being a lot of criticism against Hans Zimmer's score for Interstellar. Personally, I loved it. Especially the fact that it was loud and that it overpowered the scenes at times. The choice to have so much of Pipe Organs was really refreshing.

@KushGangarD
@KushGangarD 8 жыл бұрын
I think the criticism came from the fact that the music drowned out the dialogue in a few scenes. It was extremely strong and overpowering at times. Based on the story Hans shared, I don't think Nolan used any temp while editing the movie. Before the whole movie was properly written, before a single frame was shot - Nolan wrote a single page treatment for Hans and asked him to write some music based on it. That's where they started. A little difficult to imagine them using temp after a start like that.

It also didn't help that McConaughey did not articulate and spoke at a very low volume. English isn't my main language, so it is helpful to have subtitles on as a safety measure, but it was a necessity in Interstellar. I wonder why Nolan never asked him to actually speak instead of mumbling all the time.

I heard a different story: that Zimmer composed the main theme to Pirates of the Caribbean 1 and he is credited as the "producer" of the score, while Klaus Badelt is credited as the composer and did the rest of the tracks. It's hard to say though with Media Ventures/Remote Control, since so many different hands touch the score at different points. Ultimately we didn't include it b/c Zimmer could just say "well I did that, it's not temp music" and he'd probably be right.

That's true, in fact the only original score he has done was last year with The Hateful Eight. But otherwise I think Quentin's case is a special one, he knows a LOT of scores and I think he might even write for them, he already knows what score or song he can use when doing a film, I'd be half-surprised to know that he uses temp at all
@CROSSFADEEDAFE

Which is funny since that original piece Hans "lifted" from Gladiator into Pirates was actually already a temp or rework of Gustav Holst' Mars, Bringer of War (a classical piece). Although to be fair, Mars is one of the most influential musical pieces on modern cinema. Even Williams lifted parts from it and put it directly into Star Wars: A New Hope.

I wonder if Hans Zimmer, Alexandre Desplat, John Powell or even John Williams ever used Temp? Ehhhh... Hans Zimmer does tend to copy his own works a lot, though. The "DAdadadaDAdadadaDAdadada" them from The Dark Knight is also present in Man of Steel. Likewise, the "Time" sore from Inception sounds eerily similar to The Thin Red Line theme.

I was watching some of those film retrospective reviews from Oliver Harper, and he's one of the few reviewers out there that frequently includes info on the soundtrack in most, if not all of them. From what I've noticed from reviews of older films, the answer is that this is (like Tony points out in the other vid) not a fame question, but a technology one. Older films had to allow the composer some time to come up with a score during the production process. Very rarely it would be during Pre-production or production itself, and mostly it was in post, with the composer usually getting to view a rough cut or dailies to get some inspiration. Then, to get the timing down to film, the composer gets the orchestra together and they lay down a recording while the final cut plays so they can move their cues in and out to the cuts. So if we look at a composer like John Williams for example, and Star Wars, he very likely had no temp track that he was scoring to, because that was the process back in the 70s. One of the main ways you know this is how soundtrack scores used to work is soundtrack albums - on older films there is almost always a large excess of material to the score that you likely never actually heard in the film, because the composer recorded all of their tracks separately for approval by the director at one point, then they arranged them in that performance that laid down only the best bits to the timing of the editing. While temping back in the day may have been used by directors and editors to produce a cut (and I'm sure on some level it probably was, with an album playing in the background of the editing room or something similar), the physical process of editing was so different that you couldn't time music to visuals in the editing bay. You could only time music to visuals in the recording studio. This undoubtedly protected the classic composers from this issue to a large degree. Modern filmmaking using multi-linear digital editing allows the editing process to get timed to temp tracks which drives up the need to keep the themes similar, and as seen in the video, even heavyweights like Danny Elfman are getting cajoled into this, so it's incredibly likely that major composers like Williams would too, but only in a modern setting and only with directors that don't respect them enough (i.e. I doubt Christopher Nolan would do this to Zimmer on Interstellar or The Dark Knight because Nolan seems to prefer old school methodology a bit more, but other directors and producers might).

Wasn't Hans Zimmer caught in a lawsuit for his Gladiator soundtrack? If I remember correctly there was some striking resemblance to "Mars" by Gustav Holst. Also Zimmer tends to kind of copy himself. The theme he uses for the Dark Knight trilogy could actually be heard years before in some other movie he scored. The movie was about some heavy rain or something... I don't remember.

I was hoping they would use The Force Awakens in here. It has the most forgettable soundtrack and it seems like Abrams just used previous Star Wars Original Trilogy music as temp and just had Williams copy it. Its such a step down from his previous work on the prequels which actually sound distinct and original while still fitting Star Wars. It felt like any musician could have done the new tracks just by remixing the old music in the new movie.

If not invented, then popularised. The thing I really love about that score is that that BWAAAAAAAAH noise and a tempo of a lot of it come from the Edith Piaf song they use in film as an alarm. Slow it down, like, 10 times and you start getting the framing of the Inception score.

Most of these are fair examples, but two are weaker, for different reasons: The GotG/Avengers one - Marvel deliberately re-use stings and melodies between films. I'm not sure it's fair to class that as a 'Temp Artifact'. The American Beauty music has become iconic, it gets used deliberately all over the place. Perhaps fairer to class that one as a piece that has influenced film music more broadly.

Modern video essays are absolute trash compared to this channel. Gone are the days of actually editing a video down and understanding the concept of brevity, bringing up a thought and finishing it within the span of 10 minutes. Now it's just 1-3 hours of rambling, monotone voice overs as creators meander around the point they are trying to make while failing to edit a script down to something actually watchable. RIP to a legendary channel, often imitated but never duplicated o7

Battlestar has so many themes you can hear are from "temps", or inspired by other themes. Most noticeably, Roslin and Adama being very close to Leave No Man Behind. which was "incidental" according to Bear.

Same. A lot of "orchestral" movie soundtracks are arranged to sound just huge and not much else nowadays, and even if someone doesn't like BSG's score, it is at least very distinctive.

TONY MAN. PLEASE TELL ME YOU DIDN'T LIKE DEVELOP A DRUG ADDICTION OR FELL INTO DESPERATE FINANCIAL TIMES! Your channel is just taking off! I really hope everything is alright with you and no tragedy has befallen you. You have in my opinion one of the highest quality channels in all of tubeworld!! You give beautiful insights and extremely astute observations on films and the art of film making. Even if(and dear god I hope not) you didn't make any more videos, your body of work already leaves behind a legacy of superb critique, and pure excellence in regards to breaking down the various aspects of film. This work of yours showcases if anything a mind of high intelligence, and a burning passion that has thankfully been to put to work. Again thank you for what you've contributed to the world, your work is very inspiring for anyone in any discipline simply by your brilliant power of observation and intellectual and creative prowess. Best wishes boss hope all is well.

You do such a great job on these videos. Please tell me you'll make more. I just discovered this channel a week ago and it takes me back to film school, and the study of creating moving art. I miss having these types of discussions with other filmmakers. For example, on the topic of soundtracks, I once had a professor that hated music in film unless it was strictly motivated and called for. Otherwise, he thought music was more of a meaningless brainwashing tool used to tell viewers how they're supposed to feel about a cinematic element, rather than letting the film speak for itself.
