Boy, I miss it so much ! I have a 67 Shelby GT500 IMSA, SCCA car in the back yard, used to race it back in the day, around the Southeast, Sebring, Daytona, WPB, up into the 80's, then the cost to continue got too much. I too had a 427, TP, dual 4 that would leap that snake like nothing you could imagine. All the gear, the extra motors, Dave Williams trans, it's still here. For a second watching this video, I had the urge to put it all back together, wow, the thrill of it all.

I had lots of fun with that car and that motor, seems like it would run and run. Sometimes I wonder how my shade tree, late night preps ever kept it from blowing up, used to joke about the sloppy clearances on the pistons, but when it heated up, wow. That main motor never broke, never blew up. We broke minor stuff like linkages and the like, but that's what happens on low budget. I gotta tell you, when I look back, I think I had more fun, than if I had all the money necessary to make it better, cause I raced and worked from the heart. Many times rebuilding it till 3am, loading up and heading out, sometimes by myself to any event I could find. Man, I miss those days.@@MilesCobbett

All other cars in that field were outclassed by the iron block Ford and the driver knew it. He pulled away from everybody with ease. Past the 17:00 mark he's basically short shifting and can still stay ahead of the Datsun without much risk of breaking the car or losing 1st place. There's no replacement for DISplacement.. Amazing how we see it completely opposite. To me this guy is not a racer, and the only reason he won is because he had more horsepower. And he's absolutely brutal on that transmission. This reminds me of being 15 and having to prove to my Dad I could drive a manual trans car. So he puts me in my uncles 66 Galaxie with a built 427 side oiler and a Jerico, with a stiff assed Hays clutch. Thank God for that clutchless Jerico. I thought that FE would never stop pulling. Lol
@dusty0924 Жыл бұрын
Cool story guy. 66 Galaxie didn’t have a 427 side oiler as an option it did however have a 428 which itself is an impressive engine. But it’s definitely not a sohc motor. And paired to a Jerico seriously? Cool story time I love fairytales 😂
@lightning95sc Жыл бұрын
@@dusty0924 By chance, did you notice the word "built" in that paragraph? The car was a purpose "built" race car. Next you're going to tell me how my S10 doesn't have an LS2 and a six speed. Fairytales to one is reality to another. Be breezy, brother.
@dusty0924 Жыл бұрын
Built could mean a lot of different things. The way it’s worded one would assume your saying it came in the car. Or just say race car 🤷🏻♂️ but again good story 👍🏻 you’re sure it was a hays clutch? Not a center force or tilton 😂🤦🏼♂️ and a clutchless Jerico is a very weird tranny to prove to someone you can drive a manual. But hey I’m sure it was a cool car. I’m a huge galaxie fan.
@lightning95sc Жыл бұрын
@dustin hilliard Fair point on the wording. As far as trying me out on the car, they already knew I could drive. We were in a wide open space. Little chance of me wrecking the car or anything else. My dad actually wanted to see if I could handle the car, only I didn't know at the time that's what they were doing. I thought I was proving something to the old man. Also, this was in the late 70's.

@@Miatacrosser I just had this video come up, thus my months later reply. I had a hand me down 1974 Ford Maverick 6 cyl. 3 speed given to me. back in the late 70s and early 80s. I had a school friend's dad that was a Shelby lover, and had a 1966 Shelby 289 engine and Top Loader he sold me for it. I twisted the tail shaft out of that trans, and two more Top Loaders within 2 months of getting it on the street. Having no more money or hookups on 4 speeds, I threw the 3 speed from the 6 cyl in it, so I could drive it. 11 years later, that 3 speed was still behind the Shelby engine when I sold it like a fool.
