Holmes & Watson (2018) has to be the worst comedy I've ever seen. Critics hated it, audiences walked out during screenings, and not even Netflix would buy the rights to it. This parody of the Sherlock Holmes Franchise - starring Will Ferrell and John C Reilly in the title roles - doesn't deserve to be mentioned in the same sentence as either Sherlock Holmes or Comedy, and I loathed almost every second of it. So come listen to me tear it apart for 26 minutes.

UPDATE: Sony allowed their copyright claim to expire, so the video is now back up and public where it belongs. Apologies if this resulted in a useless notification! EDIT: Since a few people are asking, the US and European releases had a different scene depicting how Holmes and Watson first met. This one is from the European version, which is the only one I've seen. MOS-KI-TO! Sorry for the delay in getting this out, but I hope you all enjoy it. I'm trying out a new style of thumbnail for this one, so do let me know your thoughts on it.

I've read the original stories. Sherlock Holmes is and always has been near and dear to my heart. I'll watch pretty much any adaptation regarding Sherlock, even if I know it's going to be shit. But I won't watch this. I refuse. That said, what a lot of modern day film and T.V. directors (coughs in Moffat) don't seem to realise, is that Sherlock was never an asshole. He's got a bit of an ego, yes. There _are_ times throughout the series where he comes off way too direct and cold, but he actually has a lot of respect for a lot of people. They also tend to make every other character borderline retarded to make Sherlock look smarter by comparison. In the books, Watson is not stupid, Lestrade is not incompetent, and Mrs. Hudson isn't a useless ditz whose entire life revolves around Sherlock. Moreover, Sherlock is a semi-proper English gentleman when it comes to manners. He's remarkably polite in the original stories, to the point that when he does something rude, Watson is actually stunned. Furthermore, his choice to become a consultant isn't merely to stimulate his mind, although that is a large part of it. It's also because he genuinely cares about people. He doesn't get on with his brother because Mycroft "is the government", and from Sherlock's perspective the British government doesn't do shit for its people. He helps Wiggins and other homeless children by giving them odd jobs, and calls them his "secret police". He takes cases from people who may not even be able to afford his services. This odd contemporary obsession with turning Sherlock into a prick is just ... bad writing.
@thewanderingheathen
@thewanderingheathen 4 жыл бұрын
kirikakirikakirika I agree with you 95%. The only exception I take is that the BBC series wanted to take Sherlock and modernize him. They wanted to take someone with his intellectual capacity and methodical approach to life as a whole and place him in modernity. In the BBC series, we are shown some sympathetic sides of Sherlock. He just doesn’t give into them because he is fully aware of how it can be used against him and his friends. In this day and age, someone as intelligent and calculating as he wouldn’t have many friends simply for the fact that they would have a hard time interacting with him. His parents sheltered him for the most part from having friends for that very reason. In the final episode of the series, we see why. His own sister murdered his beat friend. His mother and father raised him in such a way that he wouldn’t have to endure that type of mental trauma again. If you watch the show closely, you will see many examples of him caring.

in the books, the dynamic between Watson and Sherlock is pretty enjoyable. Watson is indeed not an idiot, he is just your average english man from back then and he is capable of comprehending what his friend is saying. his only hinderance is his lack of observation. and it's shown that he often comes pretty close to the conclusion. often just missing one little detail. in some stories, he even shows where he has more know-how than Holmes. not just in the medical field.

Of note: Idiocracy was written by Mike Judge, and Tropic Thunder was written by Ben Stiller, with Etan Cohen only contributing to the screenplay on both, and not the sole screenplay writer as well. I'd guess he's better working in a team, where the oversight isn't his, as opposed to going it on his own. Looks like he did this film solo - always helps to have a heavy hitter like Stiller or Judge in charge of the writing.

This would have been the way to fix it: 1. Cast two ACTUAL BRITS as the most famous British detectives in literature. 2. Have the case be something cliched and ridiculous but the actors play everything straight. 3. End it with RDJ and Jude Law running in, followed by Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman, and make a point of how Holmes as a character endures through time. Yes, this is pretty much the strategy from Murder By Death, but Sherlock Holmes wasn’t in that movie so they shoulda given him this better treatment!

To be honest, I always imagined a what-if scenario where Holmes was put in charge of solving the Whitechapel Murders committed by Jack the Ripper with Holmes being able to completely destroy the crazy conspiracy theories made by some of the reporters on the case. Edit: This is one way I imagined such a scenario: Reporter: Detective Holmes, Doctor Watson, what do you two have to say about Sir William Gull? Watson: I’d say he’s a bright man whom the medical field is thankful to have as a contributor. Holmes: Would it be wrong to assume that you’re asking about Dr. Gull in regards to the Whitechapel Murders? Reporter: Well, there’s rumors going around that he might know who the murderer might be and- Holmes: Before you go further, let me ask you this; If Dr. Gull had any idea who the murderer would be, wouldn’t he have sent for Scotland Yard in order for them to get a better idea of the prime suspects? Reporter: Actually, that’s not all, Mr. Holmes. Do you or Dr. Watson believe that Dr. Gull might be, in some way, responsible for the murders? Holmes: *Irritated* In what - Watson: *Visibly appalled, interrupts Holmes* I’ll handle this, Sherlock. *To Reporter* Are you aware of who Sir William Gull is? Reporter: Why, yes. He was a Physician-in-Ordinary to the Queen. Watson: And you are also aware that Dr. Gull is 71 years old, correct? Reporter: Yes. Watson: Would you have good reason or motive for how a well-recognized, 71-year-old physician, who has recently suffered a stroke, could be able to conduct such an act of unjustified carnage to these women without arousing the slightest ounce of suspicion from his colleagues and his family? Reporter: Well... Watson: Come back to us or to Scotland Yard when you actually have a claim with evidence outside of here-say. Until then, tell your publishers to keep those mad-capped theories in the opium dens they came from and out of the printing rooms! Holmes: I think you handled that well. Watson: Honestly, where do those ideas come from? I’d say that Charles Dogeson would be a more probable suspect than Dr. Gull, but I’d rather have my reputation intact.

The Holmes stories have always been funny. No need to force more comedy into them. Just a couple of random examples: *A Study in Scarlet* Holmes arrives to a crime scene, the police had already trampled all over it, destroying and obscuring some of the evidence. Holmes, sardonically: 'With two such men as yourself and Lestrade upon the ground, there will not be much for a third party to find out.' Gregson, rubbing his hands in a self-satisfied way: 'I think we have done all that can be done.' Gregson: 'You should never neglect a chance, however small it may seem.' Holmes: 'To a great mind, nothing is little.' Watson reads an article about deductive reasoning, not knowing it was Holmes who wrote it. Watson then proceeds to mock the article rather extensively right to Holmes' face and he lets him. Watson, finishing his rant: '(...) I would lay a thousand to one against [the author of this drivel].' Holmes, calmly: 'You would lose your money. As for the article, I wrote it myself.' *The Sign of the Four* Holmes returns home in a disguise. Neither Watson nor inspector Gregson recognize him. Holmes tries to trace a murderer with the help of Toby the tracker dog. Toby isn't infallible. *A Scandal in Bohemia* A client comes in wearing the stealthiest disguise ever. Just google it. The client about Irene Adler: 'Would she not have made an admirable queen? Is it not a pity that she was not on my level?' Holmes, coldly: 'From what I have seen of the lady, she seems, indeed, to be on a very different level to your Majesty.' (and lo and behold, it works even without incessant gay jokes. what a marvel)

We did, in fact, get a completely faithful adaptation that IMO managed to capture the essence of the characters and the stories perfectly: the series made by Granada TV in 1984. "Once you eliminate the impossible, whatever remains, no matter how improbable, must be the truth" is actually a quote from Arthur Conan Doyle's books themselves (from A Study in Scarlet, I think, as almost all of the great quotes are). The difference between the book and the movie with this quote, however, is that Holmes actually explains why the quote makes sense - the film uses it to force the most ridiculous of "solutions" to its "problems."

There is one genuinely good film that isn't a comedy that has Will Ferrell as the lead star. It's called "Stranger than Fiction", and unlike his usual comedies, it actually has a message. The main concept is that Will Ferrell (unlike his regular roles) is a straight-laced, boring accountant with the IRS, who hears a voice one day narrating his life (that only he can hear, but he can't interact with). One day it tells him, "Little did he know that this simple, seemingly innocuous act would result in his imminent death.". The movie is essentially him trying to decipher if this is metaphorical or literal, who the mysterious narrator is, and him living his life for the first time and trying to figure out what actually makes him happy. It gets a little meta towards the third act, but the ending is...I'm almost in tears every time. It's always neat to find movies where comedians are put in serious roles. I'm not a fan of Taladega Nights, Semi-Pro, Blades of Glory, or Zoolander (though I do like Anchorman), and because of that, I generally write off most Will Ferrell movies since he doesn't seem to have much range. Stranger Than Fiction proved me wrong though, because Will Ferrell finally gets to play a role with some depth to it. His character is someone who has been numb to the world and is trying to figure out who he is, what he even likes, what his place in the world is, and what would it mean to the world if he died. There's some funny moments in it for sure, but it's a genuinely heart-warming movie about a guy breaking out of his shell. I would absolutely recommend you give it a look. It's not a good Will Ferrell movie. It's just a genuinely good movie that happens to have Will Ferrell as the main character.

I know, right? In the original stories Holmes was clinical, sure, but he was perfectly able to be polite and understanding. Heck, two of my favourite moments were his moment of panic when he thought Watson might've been killed and his genuinely being touched when Lestrade admits that he and the other Scotland Yard detectives admire and are proud to know him. I really despise the whole "genius is an antisocial asshole" trope.
