Axial Ryft Rock Racer Bashed & Broken - A Holmes Hobbies Professional Review

Get an Axial Ryft they said, it will be fun they said. Well the new Axial Ryft qualified for John's interest as it's an off-road RC rig meant to go through the rocks so he picked one up for the Holmes Hobbies collection. Instead of going through the usual unboxing and features mumbo-jumbo, he skipped right over that and went out to the backyard for some exciting action. In this video John will talk briefly about some of his thoughts on the rig and then starts to take if for a rip only to find out it's a handful. Then just minutes later, things will go bad. How bad? Well you of course need to watch the video to find out!

Everyone pointing out this is a "bouncer" and not a "racer" ... this rig can't handle either out of the box so does it matter what color lipstick we put on the pig?

I think it has more potential than the Wraith but it should have been released as a kit not an RTR. This was a pure money grab my Horizon and they screwed a lot of newcomers to the hobby. I love my Ryft but knew what I was getting into when I got it. I knew it would be getting more than it’s worth in upgrades. This will be exactly what I wanted when it’s done.

Put both! and all the brass! Diff covers, knuckles, axles trusses, beef patties, lower and up shock ends, links, bumper mounts (you'll have to add or make bumpers), and wheel weights. Then machine some custom brass drive shafts, and finally a brass driver figure ought to cover it!!!!!

I actually really love my ryft. I own a couple crawlers and rock racers. I feel like this has more potential than my bomber for an all around rig in my area where i have flat out ground and lots of rocky hills to bomb. Dial in suspension and fix the front axle and its a pretty fun rig.

It's a fun vehicle and is crazy capable but... not out of the box. Gotta mod it, check those diffs and make sure the ring gear bolts are tight, mine weren't so tight and that leaves them a bit too loose inside and they strip out fairly quickly if they aren't checked. Over the big pond the low 1st gears are out for the 2-speed, maybe we will get them soon here.

I put the HH Puller Pro R 540 L- V2 2100 KV motor with a Mamba X and it has way better slow speed control. Also the JEC racing aluminum lower arms and sway bar from FB Ryft member JW. Locked the center diff with an Axial spool and it’s quite a different beast now.

both myself & my 12yr old own this rig. his is bone stock minus the center spool i threw in it & mine runs a mambax and puller pro v2 off a 2s 130c along with a small handful of upgrades. it is an awesome rigif you use it as a hill killer. start using it as a basher or hitting shit at full speed is not what this is intended for. my only complaint is a sensorless systrm & open diffs on rock bouncer is stupid but its worth every penny imo.

I bought mine specifically to bin the cage and electronics and use the running gear to build my own vehicle, it will be a 6.6 scale defender 110 Rock Crawler but not mental stuff, Realism is my thing. It’s going to be big and heavy but I don’t want speed, just low speed control, Gearing down is difficult on this and I think the lowest pinion is 14t with no option for Larger spur gear. Will my Mamba x and Holmes Puller Pro 2200kv be ok to power this weight if I can build a bolt-on gear reduction box to take the gearing down to give a top speed of around 10mph?

An RTR crawler will need many if not all the parts replaced with upgrades for higher performance. I've ended up with crawlers that are only axle housings and transmission and otherwise all upgrades. I don't see this as anything less then a typical RTR. Add in the sway bar, upgraded servo, and two speed, and it should hold up to light duty hill climbs very well.

Don’t take this the wrong way, but, to say that cold weather is the reason they break axles, is a pretty lame excuse. I was out running mine the same day as everyone else, in the same places as everyone else, yet no one else broke axles and they were jumping farther and higher than me. I’ve replaced front and rear axles, plus the servo saver broke, a shock shaft broke, and the rear plastic trailer arms crack through where Axial put the holes for adding the metal stiffeners. Pretty sad that stiffeners were made available on release, even in the parts manual. If they needed stiffeners from the get go, then they did a crap job. Also, front and rear differentials went out on the second day. If only the spools and everything else wasn’t on backorder. But yes, they really are fun when not broken!! Just gotta figure out how to keep from breaking the main things that no other rig seems to have problems with.

Thanks to your kick ass motor (4100KV 540 L) my TRX6 does 25 MPH with bone stock driveline all the way to the stock pinion gear. I beat the living shit out of that truck and still haven't broken any drivetrain parts. I mean I jump it 20-30 feet all the time and on pavement it straight up will drag the bumper wheelieing from a dead stop, and I do it way too much because it makes me giggle like an idiot. Lol. My point is, not all fast trucks break all the time due to speed. The only weak points I've had to issue is upgrading the front suspension to handle jumping. Stock shocks, just better mounts. This truck is freakin bullet proof. I also have several trucks that never make it through a full pack without breaking. Like my Yeti.... I still love it though.

You'd think Axial would have seen what a misguided effort Redcat's Wendigo was and put better thought into the Ryft. The motor/ESC combo is sh*t, and if you drive it as intended it quickly and repeatedly breaks. It took Exocage RC $300+ in Vitavon aluminum axles, reinforced suspension links, anti-sway bar, four rear shocks, and several brushless motor ESC combinations until his Ryft became drivable and halfway reliable. Sorry Axial, I don't buy $500+ RC trucks that require an extra $400+ simply to perform as designed.

It’s not a rock racer it’s a bouncer for climbing steep inclines.

Breaks easily but it's fun when it's not broken.

It seems normal that the thing can't be driven without upgrades. Pretty poor planning and design.

On the contrary. Purely done so with the purpose to force people to buy extra axial parts to get the thing half-way drivable. Basic 'Marketing 101' thought-out by beancounters and "it's just business" -vultures. In Short: Horizon Hobbies. Profit is always in the spare parts, not in the base car. Those are usually sold at a bit of a net-loss. That goes for real cars as well as RC toys.
