Roald Hoffmann was born in Złoczów, Poland in 1937. When Nazis began deporting Jews to concentration camps, Roald’s neighbor hid him, his mother, and three relatives in their schoolhouse’s attic and storeroom. While in hiding, Roald occupied his time with studying the schoolhouse’s textbooks. After the war, Roald and his surviving family members lived in displaced persons camps and, in 1949, he and his mother moved to the United States.
Roald graduated from high school in New York City in 1955. He obtained a Bachelor’s degree at Columbia University, Master’s degree from Harvard, and doctorate from Harvard. In 1981, Roald was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry.
In 2006, Roald returned to Poland to show his son where his family had hidden. He found that the storeroom had been, by coincidence, converted into a chemistry classroom.

I’m so grateful for those videos to be posted. Those testimonies are so incredibly important. Indeed it’d be great if the sound volume could be a little higher.

tHANK YOU. Thank you. Born january 1939 in Normandy France. During the time of Mr Hoffman's life I discovered the atrocities of Nazis in the ' Stalingrad of Normandy" BUT in 1944, we were liberated by POLISH, gal Madek, the British and the Americans. I bear my cross everyday? I always said 'thank you' to those who served LIFE/ Regards

My hearing is sound and I have appreciated every word. I also applaud the interviewer. Letting Dr. Hoffman take the lead. I shall look for the play!

I suggested to people below that they get a speaker to hear these better. MANY are hard to hear. I bought a used Bose for $40, but also have two that were only $4 each. (Pawn shops usually have them if you call around). Bluetooth or plug-in, they help a lot and all films sound better with one as the typical speakers in laptops don't have enough volume. The new HP I bought has much more volume than this 4 year-old HP.

I enjoyed listening to his beautiful, calm & gentle voice. It must have been frim learning ti quiet & patients as a child.. Being Australian and born in 1954 & not having the horrors of war around me.. it's incredible to hear what went on in Europe when you all live so close & you keep getting invaded by different countries.

You say that your father and stepfather were not there when you received your Nobel prize. I believe they were there in spirit ❤

In the 1930s Polish universities introduced the so called „Desk Ghetto” enforcing stringent quotas on the number of Polish Jewish students allowed to study, and those who were admitted had to remain standing up in the back of the room while non-Jewish fellow students could attend lectures sitting. The University of Warsaw only recently added a plaque which acknowledges this tarnishing period in the history of the university.

This is an unusual interview. He has little memory of it. Too bad his late mother wasn't interviewed before she died 6 years ago.
