Holocaust survivor recognizes himself in documentary

A Holocaust survivor recognized himself and his brother as children in a screenshot from a recently released documentary.
The image is deceptively cheerful.
Taken in April 1945, it shows a dozen or so children smiling through a barbed wire fence. They are prisoners at Bergen-Belsen, a Nazi Germany concentration camp, and they have just been liberated.
Yehuda Danzig, 82, recognized two boys in the picture after it was recently published in the Times of Israel. One was him at the age of 11. The other was his brother Michael, who was 12 at the time.
It was the first and only photo he’d seen of himself as a prisoner.
“I started to cry,” says the soft-spoken Danzig. “I couldn’t believe it.”
Danzig had been in the kitchen reading the newspaper on his tablet when the black-and-white still frame caught his eye. It was taken from the Holocaust documentary German Concentration Camps Factual Survey, shot at 14 different camps and sites of atrocities in Austria, Germany and Poland, including Auschwitz, after the fall of Hitler.
Though parts of the footage have been shown over the years, the film, directed with the help of Alfred Hitchcock, wasn’t completed until 2014, after the British Imperial War Museums took over its restoration.
Danzig refuses to watch it, but says its existence validates the nightmare he suffered through.

Wildland Firefighter nope, this is not “ freedom of speech “. Free speech for neo Nazi/ white supremacy doesn't necessarily have the intended effect: protecting other kinds of expression. In fact, in practice free speech for Nazis is often itself a threat to free speech for everyone else, because Nazis use their freedom to violently suppress their opponents. Racism is built on inequality and disproportion; you can't confront it by pretending that we're all in this together when we manifestly are not. Do you know why the Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville in 2017 ended up with the death of Heather Heyer ? Because a neo Nazi used his freedom to make sure that Heather Heyer would never speak again. So, NO: first learn how to talk to others, THEN you can get “ freedom of speech”. Otherwise you will all end up like entitled ignorant spoiled brats who will learn to shut your mouth in PRISON ciao !

@@DarKRiseR it's not about 'not liking' something. there's a difference between freedom of speech and prohibiting hate speech, which anti-semitism inherently falls under. the youtube comment section is, surprisingly, not the place to practise your freedom of speech freely. youtube has clear rules prohibiting hateful speech towards persons or groups, which you'd probably know if you didn't get so defensive about your right to be racist on a video sharing platform.

Scott Grudziadz - When you are on KZfaq, FaceBook, Twitter, etc., you agree to comply with their respective terms and conditions, as in effect from time to time. The protections of free speech set forth in the US Constitution are utterly irrelevant as a legal matter to what you are permitted to say on KZfaq as it (KZfaq) is not the government full stop. If KZfaq were to adopt a rule prohibiting everybody from writing the word “Scott”, they could enforce that with zero legal problems insofar as the US is concerned.

I also find it horrible that people were separated from their families and if they were twins they were tested on. The world has changed and I hope discriminating against people will end soon and nobody is like people then! It so good that people that have survived have lived to tell the story and be thankful they survived! I really hope discrimination against people ends very soon because we’re all human and we’re all equal no matter what race , gender , religion or beliefs everyone should be treated equally❤️ RIP to the innocent people who passed ❤️

My mother kept secret the pain she suffered during the war. She could not relive it and said "secrets must be taken t the grave". She only ever told us about how she and her family had to run in the middle of the night, because the Nazis were rounding up people for the camps. This was Italy in 1943, just as the allies were coming through. They found a family that hid them for three months. They stayed in a coal bin to avoid detection. The horrors of WW2 sadly continue but it is us who must remember.

I feel you. I can't imagine that this happened in my country! I am German too with mostly German ancestry and a bit Danish... I always cry while seeing footage or documentations about that time. My grandmother turns 86 this year(she is born 1935), she grew up in a small village with a lot of agriculture. When I asked her about that time and what she noticed as a kid, she said that sometimes she went with her mother to a small town, Jewish people had many little shops there. But she was never in touch with Jewish except while visiting town because in her village there were no jewish... She can't believe why people have done this at the time. My grandfather was from Frankfurt, he was traumatized by the war, they lost everything and he saw many dead people as a kid. We can't change what people in the past have done. Today there is still genocide in other countries which is so sad.

@@Niels596 The truth will withstand the most critical of inquiries; only lies require draconian laws to prevail. That and the imprisoning of 90+ year old grandmothers in Germany.

It's perfectly understandable that he cried. A lot of emotion would wash over him seeing that photo! I notice that this was a Toronto Star project. I graduated from UofT in 1974. I met a lot of kids who were first generation Canadian. One was my Jewish boyfriend, whose parents had BOTH been put in camps during WWII. After what they went through, they opened their hearts to a Catholic girl from the U.S.!

I love his voice.... I couldn't be happier to hear the beautiful voice of one of the angle's we were lucky to have survived the holocaust....we lost so many beautiful souls and all we can do is pay them respect and rememberance.😔

Every single one of these survivors has borne the loss for an entire lifetime. I always tear up and weep along with them. Their pain is very real to me.
