Saturn is the unspoken hero of The Planets in my opinion. The way certain downbeats are delayed is a really cool effect and also thematically appropriate, a good answer to Jupiter much like how Venus is a good answer to Mars. nice stuff

Mars: Menacing, Aggressive, Brutal, It's Telegraph-like beat seems like a premonition of an upcoming conflict. (Holst composed Planets in 1913, right before WWI). Venus: Calm, Serene, dreamy and gentle, as if angel was touching the piano's keys with it's wings. Mercury: Energetic, light and spry, this quick little scherzo perfectly mirrors the celerity and quirkiness of both first planet of Solar System, and the Graeco-Roman Messenger of Gods it was named after. Jupiter: Joyous, Festive and carefree at first, but then becomes a very solemn, grand, but still a very happy, uplifting anthem. Quite Jovial, right? Saturn: Dark, Heavy and Existential. With it's almost non-existant melody, and pendulum like cadenza, Saturn is very nihilistic piece, that perfectly contrasts with Jupiter's jolliness. I always get shivers when the bells start to ring the death knell. But not all of this piece is dreary, as towards the end a few calm tones portray the acceptance of our mortality. Uranus: Excentric, Bombastic and comedic it it's grandiosity. Uranus is a whimsical romp through the keyboard. Heavily inspired by Dukas' "Sorcerer's Apprentice", it is trully a brilliant and magical show, with a massive tutti chord in the grand finale. Neptune: Enigmatic, Nebulous and Bizarre, Neptune is the planet farthest from the Sun, and Holst portrays it with a shimmering harp and formless tones. It is weird, baffling, obtuse and mysterious, and it only gets more alien, when a disembodied voice of space sirens (in truth a choir of female singers located in the neighbouring room) start to sing their wordless call, which, like any other mystery then fades into darkness of cosmos...

They’re suppose to represent the Zodiac. Holst was very big into astrology. Aries the Warrior Mars. The suite starts with Mars / Aries being the first sign of the Zodiac. Venus - Libra / Taurus - the bringers of peace. Mercury - Gemini. Jupiter - Sagittarius. Saturn - Capricorn. Uranus - Aquarius. Neptune Pisces.

I love Venus and Neptune. Venus feels like falling asleep after such a long, stressful day at school or work and waking up on a cloud and you feel relaxed and rested and some sort of love and peace that you have never felt outside of this dream world. Neptune reminds me of waking up and feeling the apprehension of school, work, or some other place. You sometimes feel excited to see your friends or someone else but you feel the nervousness and tension the closer you get. The majestic chords remind me of approaching a castle or abandoned place as well.

I've only listened to the Mars theme so far, but this is already so freaking GOOD! You guys arranged this piece so well, it's hit me with some inspiration- I wanna get home from work and arrange this for wind band!!! ...ah, who am I kidding, I'm playing video games after my shift 😂😂😂 Real talk though, you two- and even the other SMB arrangers- are all great. As a fellow arranger who does it as a hobby, I don't really have much motivation in life, since I'm only 21 and very lost in life. These arrangements are one of the few things that motivate my creative side and make me want to better myself, keep doing great stuff ❤️❤️

0:00 Mars, the Bringer of War: Mars was very powerful and harsh - cruel even. It definitely expressed fear and death. 7:23 Venus, the Bringer of Peace: Venus was very soft and dreamy. Sleepy sometimes, especially towards the end. 15:40 Mercury, the Winged Messenger: Mercury was hoppy, exciting, bold, and even in one part gentle. Many points in the music sound like running feet. If you know mythology, it really sounds like the god Mercury. 19:45 Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity: Jupiter was very happy and jolly (hence the name). It felt like something to be played at a festival or festive event like that. It made me feel so happy and energized. 27:27 Saturn, the Bringer of Old Age: Saturn felt so sluggish and depressing, but at the same time sort of creepy. Probably because it brings old age, and also death. 37:52 Uranus, the Magician: Uranus sounded like an awe inspiring performance. It’s exciting and enchanting. 43:48 Neptune, the Mystic: Neptune was very slow and magical. Also very horrifying it’s own way. It sounded eery and in some points, like sprinkling water. I think my favorites were Mercury and Uranus. Thank you so much for reading! 😁

I’m learning every movement for orchestra (except mercury because it is so fast and Neptune because no choir). I play mallet percussion for Jupiter and Uranus(epic xylophone part in Uranus), as well as the Celesta for Venus. I was also asked to play the harp 1 notes on the celesta on the entirety of Saturn, and portions of Uranus, and harp on Mars(because I don’t have an instrument to play on mars). Love learning all the notes even though I’m reading form 3 different sheet music, and this video gives a lot of help especially for learning Uranus and Saturn. My favorite 2 movements are Saturn and Uranus orchestrally, but on the piano, I loved hearing how Mercury and Saturn sounded, looked like a lot of fun to play! Thanks for helping me get the timings right especially in Uranus and Saturn!

An astounding transcription and recording. Firstly, the acoustic is unbelievable, and the fidelity is amazing. The transcription is also brilliant, in that it captures the essence of all parts, but boils it down to 'what does the ear hear at that point'. Feels as if a player-piano (yes, those old machines with a roll) may have been used to produce this performance, as it has no errors and is uncanny in its precise voicing of chords (as well as playing these perfectly, a human player would slow down or add emphasis to the main tunes). Such a machine has been used in recent history to re-create the recordings of Busoni, Ravel, Debussy, Stravinsky et al on a modern grand piano, in a perfect tonal setting. An astonishing recording nonetheless... and something for pianists with two hands to aspire to. What an acoustic, and what a piano.
