To this day, 30 years later I still remember my euphonium part/solos and all the fingering. I miss playing so much. Thank you for sharing.

You should get a euphonium and start up again :)

I love Holst in general, but Mars is one of those seminal pieces where the low brass can manifest their collective power and majesty unapologetically. Thank you for this view into the core of the piece!

Here's a comment for everyone saying "this is a Euphonium not a Tenor Tuba!" Yes. As a Euphonium player myself, I know that is obvious. The term is referring to the part name which Gustav Holst named "Tenor Tuba," it's not referring to the instrument.

From my understanding, a euphonium is a tenor tuba. Several of my instructors have told me that the names are interchangeable, even

Hey im a young euphonium and it makes me sad knowing that euph isnt in jazz or normally in Orchestra and its because people assume euph can only do one thing and play soft..... i know euphonium can be in all different types of environments but i dont think composers or conductors will understand and continue to limit the ability of this amazing instrument

Elkholm the same goes for the concert band song named *Awayday by Adam Gorb* it’s a tenor tuba part but we the Euph’s get the part.

A euphonium to me is like a trombone but with a more similar tone to a tuba, and I agree it should be used more in jazz and other genres of music other than classical and British brass bands

A euphonium is quite literally a tenor tuba. One and the same.

Thanks for playing it straight. I always get a giggle when players try to use vibrato in the solo not knowing the context of the Euph part in the piece.

The euphonium soloist in the wind symphony orchestra at my school uses vibrato and it just sounds wrong

"Tenor Tuba" is a generic name for any wide bored saxhorn type designed to play in the tenor range. There are quite a few, but the Euphonium happens to be the most widely used type. The French style Saxhorn Basse or French Tuba and the Bohemian Kaiser Bariton could equally be described as tenor tubas. If you look at bass tubas,, you will see a great variety of types, shapes and sizes, some with piston valves and others with rotary valves. Nobody would think to suggest that a Besson EEb isn't really a tuba but that a Mainz or an Alexander rotary model is. Euphonium is just a name on a par with Bombardon (for a bass tuba). The only difference is that the latter name is rarely if ever used, whereas the Euphonium name has stuck.

Is possible if this part played by Wagner tuba?
@weavileoff04612 жыл бұрын
Yes, but Wagner tuba is much harder and you have to correct pitch with your lips unlike horn where you put your hand in the bell

Dont know why but i dont like the bass bonist next to you, nothing personal on them but to me it just seemed choppy and a lot of times i cant hear you bc of them, i play bass bone myself but i always try to keep track of these main parts when i play this, just brings it together

K66919190 tenor tuba on mars tends to have a lot more parts supporting it when there isn’t a solo and the way you would typically play through a stand in orchestra would mean that the bass trombone would almost be playing directly into the microphone of this camera opposed to the upward facing bell of the euphonium
@TubaTones5 жыл бұрын
I know why you don’t like the bass bone in this video. Because it’s really not good at all. Intonation is a mess, notes start sharp and then slope down, if at all. Also the timing (feel) is lacking. As with the balance, you also have to consider microphone, or in this case mobile phone, placement. The bass bone bell is pointing straight at the iPhone microphone, the euphonium is pointing straight up, away from the microphone. No chance.

The way a trombone resonates is vastly different than a euphonium. You can hear how even when not playing that loudly the euphonium rings throughout the auditorium like a bell. Trombone players have to put out a lot of sound to get the kind of resonance needed for a piece like this. If you were out in the audience it would sound very balanced.

Correction Euphonium not tuba nearly the same but still different

The caption is tenor tuba and not tuba. The Euphonium is as much a tenor tuba as a slide trumpet is to a soprano trombone. The mechanics and design are the same.
