Brenda Lee, Tanya Tucker, and LeAnn Rimes all had their first huge hits when they were around 13/14 years old. All three have a special bond and friendship. "Delta Dawn" was originally recorded in 1972 when Tanya was 13. She went on to have a very successful career into adulthood and 48 years after her first hit, in 2020, won her first Grammy for "Bring My Flowers Now". Other hits by Tanya: "What's Your Mama's Name", "Blood Red and Going Down", "Would You Lay With Me in a Field of Stone", "San Antonio Stroll", "Texas (When I Die)", "Love Me Like You Used To", "The Jamestown Ferry", "Two Sparrows in a Hurricane", "If Your Heart Ain't Busy Tonight", "It's A Little Too Late (To Do the Right Thing Now)", "Strong Enough To Bend", "Some Kind Of Trouble", "Down To My Last Teardrop", and so many more hits than I can name here! That said, proof of her being a true country legend!

This song is about a faded Southern belle whose reputation was tarnished when she hooked up with a man of ill-repute. Now 41-years-old, she wanders the streets of Brownsville, Tennessee, in search of her lost lover. In the book Chicken Soup for the Soul: Country Music, Harvey says the tune is really about his mother, a heavy drinker who died in an apparent suicide by crashing into a tree when the songwriter was a teen. Harvey had just returned from a TV gig with his band; he had asked his mother not to go, worried she would embarrass him by drinking too much and making a spectacle. The guilt over his mother's death stuck with him for years. A decade later, he was hanging out at Larry Collins' house with a group of country musicians. Everyone fell asleep except for Harvey, who stayed up strumming his guitar. That's when he saw his mother. "I looked up and I felt as if my mother was in the room. I saw her very clearly. She was in a rocking chair and she was laughing," he recalled. "My mother had come from the Mississippi Delta and she always lived her life as if she had a suitcase in her hand but nowhere to put it down. She was a hairdresser in Brownsville. She was very free-spirited, and folks in a small town don't always understand people like that. She never really grew up." After coming up with the line, "She's 41 and her daddy still calls her 'baby.' All the folks 'round Brownsville say she's crazy," he woke up Collins and the pair finished the song within 20 minutes.

There were several well-remembered versions of "Delta Dawn". It was first recorded by Tanya Tucker -- thirteen at the time -- who took her version to the top of the country charts, which then brought it to the attention of both Helen Reddy's producer (who reportedly first offered it to Barbara Streisand, whom he was also producing, but she turned it down, at which time he gave it to Reddy to record) and Bette Midler, who recorded a very bluesy version. Reddy's version was released one day before Midler's, and immediately caught on, gaining almost instant radio airplay (at which time, Midler's record company reissued the single with the old "B" side, a cover of the Andrew Sisters' "Boogie Boogie Bugle Boy" now issued as the "A" side). Reddy's version reached #1 (and Midler hit the top ten with "Boogie Boogie Bugle Boy"). Kitty Wells, Tammy Wynette, Loretta Lynn and Dottie West also put out versions of "Delta Dawn".

1. This version is the 1990 re-recorded version for Tanya’s album Greatest Hit: Encore. The original was recorded in 1972 when she was 13. Her voice is grittier in the original. 2. In the song, Delta Dawn is not deceased. The “mansion in the sky” is a reference to broken promises akin to the saying “ocean front property in Arizona.” Delta Dawn is 41, once the most beautiful girl in town, she now wanders aimlessly around town with a packed suitcase waiting for a “man of a low degree” (con artist) that promised to marry her to return.

Tanya is awesome in any era, be it her early teen recordings, her reemergence in the late-80s to her latest recording produced with Brandi Carlisle. Tanya has the tendency to re-record. Probably some kind of a record company dispute. But Tanya is one badass singer. She’s not someone you want to mess with. Her catalogue of hits runs deep. Early songs could be “What’s You Mama’s Name?”, “Blood Red and Going Down”, “Jamestown Ferry”, “Would You Lay With Me (In a Field of Stone). Later ones could be “Strong Enough To Bend,” “Two Sparrows in a Hurricane,” “Don’t Go Out With Him.” She recently had a comeback album in which the most well-received track was “While I’m Livin’”

Tanya Tucker was only 13 when she recorded this back in 1973. She's now been in the business for 50 years. She's the latest inductee into the Country Music Hall of Fame. So many great hits. Listen to Blood Red and Going Down. She did that as a 15 year old.. Wow. Also Two Sparrows in a Hurricane, If it Don't Come Easy or her Bring My Flowers Now.

Every time i hear a Tanya Tucker song, it reminds me of a good friend who fell in love with her when he first heard her sing Delta Dawn on TV. She was 14 at the time and he was the same age. From that day he became a country music fan, after previously being a rock fan. He met her at one of her concerts and had a photo taken with her. He's no longer with us, but he always cherished that meeting and photo with her.

I see others commented, this was first released in 1972. Tanya has a very soulful style and sound. This is one of those older country songs I hear as lost love, still coming to town after years waiting for the man who promised her. She has many great songs hopefully you listen to more of her. She was one of my parents' favorites. Grew up with older country sound coming out of the stereo often.

The story is a sailor came into Brownsville and seduced a young Delta Dawn and then sailed away after giving her a rose to wear and promising her he would come back for her so they could get married. Ever since then, she takes her zuitcase down to the docks every day to meet him wearing the rose, but he never comes. The song mentions she's 41, zo she has been waiting for him for around 20 years.

*DELTA DAWN* is the very first song I ever discovered on my mom's portable radio at the age of about 8 years old. I will never forget it. One night I was very bored with what my family was watching on TV, so my mom told me to go listen to music on her old fashioned pink radio in her room and so I did! I remember being completely entranced by this song and then suddenly singing along with the chorus - one of my earliest childhood memories of loving music.

I also hope you guys watch and react to the film version "9 To 5" which stars Lily Tomlin, Jane Fonda and Dolly Parton, who steals the film in her first role which is now iconic. Dolly is one of the best all around entertainers ever and an amazing woman. Please react to both of these suggestions. Me & a group of friends drove out to see her at the Mid-State Fair in Paso Robles, CA in the mid 80’s. She was a pistol full of fun & sas…just wonderful. We were pretty rowdy & loud stomping on the bleachers to the side of the stage & getting loud. Instead of being sensitive she jumped right in, joined us & practically sang her concert to us, cuz she’s just like that. Gotta luv Tanya Tucker👍🏽

No idea how significant this song is to me. I was a super tiny 4 year old in 1972, walking with my brother, Shawn, 9 blocks to school everyday in Talequah, his hand in mine, me singing this. I remember crying one morning because I had nothing to share for share time. Shawn said I should sing this song. I DID. Shawn drowned in 1976, just before his 9th birthday. He was the bravest boy I ever knew, and he made ME brave that day. Yikes Shucks Miss my big hero brother everyday, until I am with him in Heaven.

@@wlg1223, who cares who did it first? It's OK to prefer a cover to an original, you know. I could say that about every single Linda Ronstadt song, since 99.9% of everything she recorded was a cover. And given that most people don't even know that, they almost certainly like her cover versions better than the originals.
