(August is an album by blues rocker Eric Clapton, released in 1986. Primarily produced by Phil Collins, in association with longtime Clapton associate Tom Dowd, it became Clapton's biggest-selling LP to date.)
Eric Clapton wrote this song with Stephen Bishop
(Bishop explains how this song came together: "Phil Collins married his second wife Jill in 1984 and I was invited to the wedding, so I went and stayed at Eric and Pattie's castle Hurtwood Edge. While I was there, Eric asked me if I wanted to work on this idea he had called 'Holy Mother.' I went upstairs to my room and started working on the idea - played what I had for him and he worked on it later and he recorded it on his August album with Phil Collins producing. He also did a version of it with Pavarotti which is really great." )

This song has help me get through some very rough nights. As a fireman for over 38 years I have seen tragedies that have changed families lives . Witnessing people die regularly ,and then seeing their love ones trying to dealing with loss would tear into my soul. There would be times when as a fireman I would have to be a “stand-in “family member. I would be the last person that this dying person would see before passing away. I would try my very best to try to save them, but knowing full well that I would not be able to do so. I would return back to the station and turn on the shower so no one would hear me cry. This song helps me cope with these tragic memories. It is painful, but I know there is a Holy Mother. Thank you Eric Clapton.

A prayer to Our Mother will NEVER include cursing her name. No matter how you try to justify it, your faith should never allow you to do such a thing. In what would be an otherwise beautiful example of crying out in despair to the Gentle Mother, he absolutely ruined it for me.

Written while in a rehab for substance abuse, Clapton said: "It was like a moment of clarity when I saw the absolute squalidness of my life at that moment. I began to write a song called “Holy Mother,” in which I asked for help from a divine source, a female that I couldn’t even begin to identify. I still love that song, because I recognize that it came from deep in my heart as a sincere cry for help."

I had no notion who I thought I was talking to, I just knew that I had come to the end of my tether . . . and, getting down on my knees, I surrendered. Within a few days I realized that . . . I had found a place to turn to, a place I’d always known was there but never really wanted, or needed, to believe in. From that day until this, I have never failed to pray in the morning, on my knees, asking for help, and at night, to express gratitude for my life and, most of all, for my sobriety. I choose to kneel because I feel I need to humble myself when I pray, and with my ego, this is the most I can do. If you are asking why I do all this, I will tell you . . . because it works, as simple as that.

Thank you for this. Many have lived in those times so desperate, they cried out to Mother Mary. My father, a Marine once told me, when the odds were so great against them under heavy fire in WW2, many of those young teenage boys cried out for Mother.

Bearing in mind the physical and mental state Eric was in when he wrote this song, and all the pains he had to endure and overcome at these times and after them, there is a strong suspicion that some Holy Mother listened to him...He said he's not in religion, ( neither me ), but let's hope that she still keeps an eye on him for as long as possible
