Located on Holy Island in the county of Isle of Anglesey just off the north coast of Wales is the town of Holyhead, or Caergybi in Welsh.
Holyhead was the site of a Roman fort believed to have been built during the 4th century as a defence against sea raiders. It was a rare instance of a three-walled fort, with the fourth side facing the sea, and possibly the site of a quay.
In the 6th century King Maelgwn of Gwynedd gifted the site of the old Roman fort to Cybi, a Cornish saint who built a monastery there, hence the town's Welsh name, Caergybi - meaning 'Cybi's fort'. The monastery was sacked in the 10th century by Viking raiders. On its site today is St Cybi's Church, which was built between the 13th to 16th centuries.
In the early 19th century, Holyhead became the main Welsh ferry port to Dublin. This came about following a series of improvements to the roads of Anglesey, culminating in the completion of the Menai Suspension Bridge in 1826, designed by Thomas Telford.
In 1848 Holyhead's first railway station opened. In 1851, a year after the completion of the Britannia Bridge linking Anglesey to mainland Wales by rail, a second station opened. The present station dates from 1866 and is the western terminus of the North Wales Coast Line, which links up to Crewe in England. On the site of the station itself is the Port of Holyhead ferry terminal, providing a direct connection for those coming to and from Dublin.
In 2006 the Celtic Gateway footbridge opened. Seen at the start of the walk, it links up the railway station and ferry terminal with the town centre. Holyhead is the busiest passenger ferry terminal on the west side of Britain with about 2.3 million people passing through the port each year.
Famous people from Holyhead include Dawn French.

Stayed here in 2019 whilst on my way to Ireland with my springer spaniel Rolo. Stayed at the Wavecrest B&B (Highly recommended) I absolutely loved it, so much that we stayed over again on the way back. I loved the sleepy little town which gives no clue as to the amazing beaches just a short distance away.

Wonderful viewing ! I was last in Holyhead over thirty years ago and feel certain the Celtic Gateway Bridge was but a twinkle in the town-planners eye at the time . There was a mood of optimism on the train as people were going on or returning from holiday. Sadly , this evaporated as I toured a few pubs before my sailing .The local residents were crestfallen and pinned their hopes on a move to a major city far away . A few years back some of my Hong Kong friends passed through on their way to Dublin. They were delighted to hear the ancient Welsh tongue spoken by 'blue collar workers ' only to be told they had been listening to Polish ! I look forward to your next trip . You regularly select such evocative locations .
