I only buy homage watches and could stare at them for hours. I'm alone in my enthusiasm, so no in-person watch people to impress. I love to do my own refinements, mix and match parts, get into the 'watch-making' aspect. Buying homages with potential isn't easy and I've learned to really appreciate details. Seems like cheap homages done well are a kind of cheat and something that shouldn't exist, but they hold my interest a long time. Through my cheap hobby, I learned I'm an Omega guy. Also learned I love Tudor a lot and have different iterations of BlackBay homages.

I like the Pagani Design homage chronographs with Seiko VK63 movements as they keep good time, areade of good materials and have good level of finishing for the $75 to $150 price range. I could never afford an Omega or Rolex chronograph and the Pagani models have subtle differences such as added date windows or differing dial colors. Good video and agree about not buying fakes.

Excellent video. First, especially in the area of intellectual property, courts often don't have a clue (I'm an attorney). The AP case you mention could just as easily been decided against AP. And it's worth mentioning that in a given industry (i.e., watches, cars, cameras), the greatest innovations regularly come from the companies who not only 'imitate', but improve a product in the process. In a competitive free market, that's actually what's supposed to occur. When Honda (Acura) and Toyota (Infiniti) entered the luxury sedan market, the companies they were 'imitating' (i.e. Mercedes, BMW) were forced back to the drawing board to create an even better product. Ideally, the innovations and increased choice creates a win/win scenario for us as consumers.

My Steinhart get tons of compliments. I realize it looks like a submariner and that it is a Rolex homage however if someone asks me if it is a Rolex I gladly say "no, its a Steinhart". Still a good watch at a fair price that also looks great. And I didn't have to empty my retirement account to buy it.

There is no WAY I could afford a Rolex Submariner, and I hate fake watches, that is obviously something we should all be against. I bought an Invicta Pro Diver, which is a VERY similar style-wise to the Submariner, but it has a quality movement by Seiko, and it says Invicta EVERYWHERE. I am brand new to watches, pulled in surprisingly enough by smartwatches. I do not have a lot of money, and I expect my "collection" to have quite a few Seiko 5's in it, but it is nice to be able to get a watch that looks great, it's not a fake, but certainly has that style to it.

Look at how hard it is to be original within the industry these days and come up with something new how many companies go back to " heritage" inspired models where they look like their 60s-70s iterations.

i think homage watches are cool, especially if they are paying homages to really sought after vintage pieces. not everyone can drop money for a paul newman.

Another awesome video. I have to say that I was given a replica watch and I took it to a jeweler to size and he was in awe of how good it was. He told me that it was very convincing. I said, thanks & wore it for a while then it died... no big deal. I have several good homage watches that are from reputable brands and they are great pieces. I don't foresee me being in the market for a $25K presidential but my Croton works just as good. Honestly I have no problem with homage watches. Replica and fake watches are the same category to me personally. But homage watches if built right aren't a problem. Most people ( i.e the general working public) can not buy a Rolex, or don't want to spend thousands of dollars on a watch. For most people five hundred dollars is a lot for a watch. Us hobbyist are a different breed where we see that 7 k for a Rolex as justifiable.

I don't quite understand everyone's hate towards homage watches (fake and replicas are horrible though), at the end of the day, it is not the same audience who is looking at these watches. someone isn't on the fence between a Rolex submariner or an Invicta pro diver. Rolex loses no money from having the Invicta pro diver exist. it only benefits the consumers who maybe can't drop thousands on a Rolex but want a similar style. As long as it is two different price points (i.e isn't taking money from the original manufacturer) and is clearly marketed as something else (i.e says 'Invicta pro diver' not 'Rolex submariner') who cares (ideally it adds its own flair too).

Tudor can’t be a homage of Rolex as it’s owned by Rolex. It used to be Rolex’s B line, now it’s starting to develop an identity, although the Rolex influence is present.

Trade dress only applies in some countries, and it varies between them, as each one has its particular Trade dress law. In US, Trade dress rights are enforceable under both state and federal law, but typically, holders of these rights look to the Lanham Act as a source of protection. But it doesn´t applies to chinese homages, because they aren´t made, physically sold, or a constituted brand in US. However, chinese do sell them in the US through ali express page, and selling them is constituted an act of unfair competition. Fair use wouldn´t apply for them as a defense. But also, the design isn´t identical, and they stand out as their own brand, so it is not trademark infringement either. Trade dress focuses on the "looks". Also, Practical functions are Intellectual Property Rights, not Trade dress. I think the World Trade Organization hasn´t put guidelines in Trade dress yet. Swiss Legend is a US watch distributor, and must be subject to the laws of the United States. On the other hand, the Chinese are not. But US federal trademark law also includes online sales. "Infringing goods" are the key words. "Infringing goods" should include Trade dress goods. In US legislation, marketing or promoting infringing goods on a website creates liability for trademark infringement. In europe, the Court of Justice of the EU discussed that the trademark owner has the right to prohibit others from offering "infringing goods", putting them on the market or stocking them for the purposes of sale, under the EU Trademark Regulation. In real life, what will happen with homages watches? Ali express is gonna be banned? there are many reasons why not; some of them may say it is even unconstitutional. But as it is a kind of unfair competition, they can raise tarifs, but then again, that has political implications; we are dealing with china here, hello...

Is my Spinnaker Hull watch a homage to a Panerai? Absolutely. But it’s also different enough to be its own. I also do not mind homage watches because I don’t think they’re stealing customers from the higher tier brands. Would I rather have a Panerai? Again, absolutely. But I didn’t buy the Spinnaker for a 1-for-1 replacement - I bought it because I love the style of Panerai watches but I’m never going to buy one unless my position changed radically, or for a number of years. So great points! But also yeah, replicas can GTFO.

I don't think I'll ever be able to buy a Rolex, yes I can probably save for seven, eight years and get one, but I'd have a problem justifying the purchase. To my mind, the money can be better put on rent, a car or even food on the table. That being said, I also believe that you're only fooling yourself if you've purchased a fake watch. If people know you can't afford a Rolex, the first thing on their mind is it's a fake. For me, homage watches on the other hand serves a way to scratch the itch lusting for a particular design, without trying too hard to pass of a fake as the real one. I have several homage watches, and love them for what they are, well built (for the price) watches that offer people access to iconic designs that otherwise would've been out of reach. Another thing is that the market for homage watches is completely different from the market of top luxury brands, and won't steal market shares away from them. With companies like Rolex who cannot keep up with demand, and prices becoming thousands of dollars above retail, finding one for the right price is becoming a struggle to even the people who have the money to buy one. The only way I'd buy a luxury watch brand is if I win the lottery, my conscience just wouldn't allow me to save for a luxury item, especially if there are more important things that I can put the money into. I'm living comfortably with the meager wage I earn, I'm happy and I'm content. Part of that bliss comes from not being a slave to fashion.

For my inexperienced eye almost every diver with bezel that looks like Rolex Submariner looks like a homage watch. Even Orient Ray III, which I'm planning to get my hands on, as soon as it hits the stores in my country. And there's only handful of variations of dress watches you can make, so accidents are inevitable. So I don't have problem with those, unless it's exact replica with different logo. In China manufacturing price for any automatic replica is under 100 USD. so if you pay 500 for Rolex you get ripped off and have a trash on your wrist. For real deal you get ripped off, but you can wear it with pride. btw, manufacturing price for quartz fashion watch is under 2 USD.

I always loved the look of the original Rolex Daytona and the thing that's always fascinated me about the "homage" debate is that the design and layout of the Daytona was based strongly on the original Omega Speedster. Does this then make the original Daytona a Speedster homage watch?

I agree that homage watches are great for giving people without mountains of money access to the great designs high end brands provide. I generally prefer a lot of more original designs, but homages are generally not bad unless you get companies like Hublot making Royal Oak like watches. I don’t mess with fake watches though. It’s just not right to try to pass off a fake when I’d rather show up with a really nice original design that isn’t pretending to be something it isn’t.

I personally own many Homage watches from a brand that over values their watches and then sells them way more cheaply because I love the look of the Submariner, but cannot afford one. For less than $100 at a time, I can get all the variety of features that I want. I do not act like I own an original, but enjoy wearing the look. Love all of your videos.

Great video. I have an idea for a video. After my father passed away and my mother gave me his Seiko 17 jewels automatic. This Swatch holds sentimental value to me, I remember as a kid my mother giving it to him for Christmas and father wore that watch every day of for the next 30 years or so. But the now the watch is in bad shape. I love this watch and would be honored to wear it in memory of my father. So, my idea for a video it's a simple question how should one go about to repair and or restore old watches?

Teddy's example of Tudor and Rolex Sub is a great example. There are other 'accepted' homage Subs like Seiko. So that being the case I think that opens the door for others to do the same. Citizen has a Sub replica so if these examples are 'accepted' then all other properly badged Homage watches should be acceptable as well.

Homage watches have never really appealed to me because, in my opinion, most of them really look nothing like the brand they are supposedly "Mimicking" (For want of a better term!) Replica watches? I can't see that the problems these fakes are causing will ever be completely eradicated. Too many people who (Like your present scribe!) will never be able to afford a Rolex, still want something that looks like the real thing. Indeed the very fact that these watches are considered illegal might be another incentive for some people to buy one! I firmly believe the rightful owners of these brands should pursue the "Fake makers" in the courts...but I also firmly believe that they will never wipe out the illegal trade.. I wouldn’t feel comfortable wearing a Invicta pro diver around my friends that have a R. Submariner. But I would feel comfortable wearing a Casio Duro, because it is different and a classic in its own way.

Saying that replica watches are a damage to the gen brands is nonsense. The money that go into replica watches will NOT go into gen brands if replica watches disappear. I have multiple homage pieces and they are all very nice watches. I can't buy a Rolex Submariner as of right now since school is my focus so for me it's perfect. I get the styling and look without the huge price tag. Eventually I am going to buy myself a Submariner, but for right now I can only afford an homage piece. I totally disagree with the issue with Homage Watches. For example, I own 3 tudors, 4 Rolexes , and 3 Omegas. Also I bought one San Martin Homage similar to Black Bay Pro but with some key differences for me that prevented me to buy the Black Bay Pro (Size on san martin is 39 mm, dial has applied markers, the GMT hand is slightly different and match almost the size of the Minute hand, and the case is thinner than the original Black Bay. In order to get changes to achieve my takes what I want to complete my perfect watch, I changed the Movement to seiko 6R54 The results has been really nice. The watch sits better on my wrist and regulated the movement to -3/+4 spd. Total expenditure was $925 then I have the watch I want including an excellent piece that will last longtime. Tudor has not come out with a solution for a thicker slab case for Black Bays. I buy watches to wear and enjoy, not buying the watch to show I bought a expensive watch to show the people. At the end who is looking at the watch it’s me to check for the time. Also, Rolex is play the game with Flippers to get the prices up. BS on my opinion.

I think that big brands like Rolex etc, should not sue homage watch companies because someone who is buying a 200$ homage in most cases can't afford to buy a 10,000$ Rolex, so they are not stealing customers from Rolex.

My opinion is as follows: Fakes: Unacceptable under any circumstances. Replicas: I would differentiate them from fakes by saying that a fake is an exact replica of an existing item using trademarks and copyrighted material without the approval of the owner of said trademarks; whereas on the other hand, a replica is an exact copy of an item that is so old and so long out of production that none of the branding or logos are copyrighted anymore. I don't know if there are any watches that fall into this category, but I know there are plenty of companies that make replicas of classic cars, like the Shelby Cobra, that are an exact copy of the original car, but since the Cobra is so long out of production, nobody really cares. These I would consider acceptable. I don't know if there are any watches that meet the criteria I have laid out, but if someone were to, for example, make a copy of an old pocket watch or ships chronometer from the 1800s, if it was from a brand that no longer exists, and it is marketed as a remake, and not an original, I wouldn't have a problem with that. Homage watches: I would consider homages acceptable in one of two circumstances. 1) The design is different enough that it has originality. 2) It was a homage made with the original manufacturer's consent (i.e. the Tudor Submariner or the Sinn 903). With regard to case #1, while very close homages aren't illegal, I personally consider them to be tasteless and gaudy. For example, the Steinhart GMT Master homage, the Invicta Submariner homage, the Rotary Seamaster Diver homage, and the Bulova AP Royal Oak homage shown in the video were just blatant ripoffs with little to no originality to the design whatsoever. However, I think the Citizen Navihawk (or whatever Hawk that was) and Seiko 5 were different enough from the Navitimer and Fifty Fathoms that they would be acceptable.

With Rolex you are literally paying for a brand. In fact you could buy an Omega Seamaster for 4k (which is super expensive) and it will keep better time than any of the Rolex watches you get that would cost you 10 times as much.

As an engineer, it's not hard to replicate anything. It's simple as buying the watch and reverse engineering it. Companies do this all the time, from automotive, clothing, tech, and watches, you name it. It's not unbelievable that these watches are replicated.

Framing the camera, in a way where you could see more of you (like the whole torso), and 2. Also changing up the background music, because after the intro music it feels like a stark contrast. If the Swiss luxury watch industry was really serious about shutting down fake watches being sold as authentic, then they could easily accomplish that with absolute minimal cost to them, measured by their profits. All they need to do is create a universal, secure, online database, into which the Watch serial number at time of original purchased plus a second secret code only known to the original customer gets entered. That secret code would be passed on to the next owner at time of secondary market sale. As long as the system is free of electronic glitches and protected from getting hacked, each and every watch can be authenticated, fake watches would be shut out, and the customers would be protected. But it seems that the Swiss watch industry looks out for themselves, but not for their customers.

I have a friend that was passed down a Rolex Sub from his grandfather. However, he didn't like to wear it out during college for fear of losing it. So he got the Invicta watch that looked similar but obviously wouldn't hurt as much as losing as Rolex. These Replicas are also great for starting a collection, as I picked up a Seiko 5 for my brother to get his collection started. He is now becoming much more interested in watches and hopefully will buy his own nice watch soon!

Ironically, the Rolex replica market is probably more profitable than the genuine one.

Hi Teddy. Love your videos. I got the call from my AD in November and purchased the two toned Bluesy Sub. I’ve always loved this watch. I also bought the Invicta copy and here’s why. I’ve read that in some restaurants and other places, there are spotters. So, I wear my Rolex in the restaurant and before I leave, I go to the bathroom and switch to my Invicta. If anyone demands the watch on my wrist I will happily give them the copy and make the spotter look like a jerk.

I BELIEVE that replica and homage watches do have a place and use .both for aspiring watch owners as well as those who own the originals, this comes from the( jewelry World) if you are the owner of very rare and irreplaceable pieces, it would be unwise to wear it to a social event for fear of loosing it or having some sort of damage, but what good is it to have something so fine to leave it in a vault where no one ever sees it .so its common to have a replica made that you can wear for such events. In similar fashion if i was traveling on vacation somewhere i would still want to wear a nice watch but if the replica was lost or stolen it wouldnt ruin my vacation !!!
