MERITOCRACY that is called. What is an example of meritocracy in society? 1. Getting the Job due to Higher Qualifications. Why it's Meritocratic: We could consider getting a job due to higher qualifications as a sign of meritocracy working. In this instance, you'd get the job purely based on your ability to outdo your competitors and not based on factors like nepotism or politicking.

In 2001, I took a job working at a small 4 bay auto shop as a mechanic. I was 19 years old at the time, so I didn't have much work history to justify asking for a lot of money. The owner said he'd pay me 10 dollars an hour, in cash every friday. I had just recently stopped taking classes at the local community college because I couldn't afford to pay rent, food, and school expenses without working full-time. The shop had one other mechanic, an older Armenian guy, that basically ran the emissions testing full time. I handled the other 3 bays, which were mostly oil changes, tires, brakes, minor repairs etc. Sometimes we'd get head gasket jobs and things like that. Usually I'd try to keep cars moving through the bays as quick as possible. There was another shop down the road that would send smaller jobs my way, and I'd do the same for them with more major work that we weren't well equipped to take on. On the 3 bays I ran, we'd average thousands of dollars a week. The shop was usually closed on the weekend, but the owner said I could come in on Saturday and Sunday if I wanted to work extra hours, so I usually would go in 7 days a week. I was young and didn't do much besides work back then, so my typical schedule was 0700-1900 weekdays and then 0800-1800 weekends. That's 12 hours weekdays, and 10 hours weekends. Average 80 hours a week, getting paid a flat rate of 10 bucks an hour, so 800 bucks a week in cash, plus the tips I'd get. I was getting ripped off, but I enjoyed the work and at the end of the week making nearly $1,000 free and clear as a 19-year-old in 2001 wasn't bad. I knew I wasn't being paid what they should but it didn't really matter. After a few months of this, the owner said he really liked me working on the weekends and wanted me to continue to do so but they were going to pay me a flat rate of $600 a week because he "couldn't afford to pay for all the hours" anymore. Ended up quitting and joining the Air Force shortly after that. This type of experience is not unique, and why people have no loyalty to stay anywhere.
@libertybell8852
@libertybell8852 Жыл бұрын
Yeah, that's how people get taken advantage of, but it's an experience! I had thr same thing and they basically told me that they paid "Chinese overtime" but... it was a joke. The company ended up getting sued for that crap. I told them way back in 2004 that they would but they didn't listen. 🤷‍♀️ K work in an office setting now and would love the option to work from home 1 day out of 5. I can get so much more done b/c I don't have the people stopping at my desk. Loud co-workers making it so I can not focus, etc. I can get 3 days worth of administrative stuff done at home in one day because nothing is interrupting me. I get why people can't work remote all the time and not everyone has the discipline

Another part of it is the growth of the gig economy. If people don't like what businesses are offering, they have the option to try to take on a gig job like Uber or Doordash, and, often times, these jobs pay better than a lot of businesses do. The average Uber driver makes around $42,000 per year according to Comparably (roughly $20/hr at 40 hrs. per week). Knowing that, it makes sense that people might turn down part time jobs at $15/hr in favor of driving for Uber. Businesses may need to adapt and increase their offers if gig jobs continue growing in popularity.

I'm generation x and it all started in the generation previous and in mine where you see this type of mindset, thankfully I had grandparents that lived through the great depression and they helped to raise me to be self reliant and realistic. Sadly that way of thinking is dying out when it should be what is taught to the newer generations, unfortunately we have a few generations of Americans who are going to have to learn the lessons of the past the hard way and probably sooner than later...Never thought I'd see that in my lifetime.

Most people can buy their own health insurance on a exchange with a premium tied to your income. Lastly, in just the last 4 years most minimum wage jobs then paying $7-9 (depending on your region) are now paying $15-18/hr+ with no experience! Your life is scalable. If you decide or can't elevate yourself through your career, then that's on you & fate. Not everyone will win it big in life. It doesn't mean you can't find value & happiness in your life, as well as be respected. You sound exactly like what they're mentioning. Entitled! That is usually what happens to children raised by adults with poor parenting skills .we are in a pandemic of grown adults trying to be friends with their children instead of a parent . Those same parents never take responsibility for their part in their children's failures as a human and instead want to blame society or the culture or the educational system. Fact of the matter is if you invest in your children like you would a valuable commodity their core values more then likely will be applied in life and not so easily compromised or influenced.

I would add to this, the "helicopter parent" syndrome. No matter where the kid goes, mommy or daddy is hovering nearby. 50 years ago, you let kids go out and play, and do whatever and go wherever, just be home by dark. Nowadays, if somebody spots an unattended kid, the parent is brought up on child endangerment charges. The kids never learn independence or self-sufficiency. They never learn that actions have consequences. They're not given a chance to grow up.

What people need to recognize is that what they bring to an organization has a "market price." The price is higher when it's for a skill that is more rare. Does that mean that an electrical engineer at $50/hour is "worth" more than a strawberry picker at $12? No, of course not. After the thief takes off with the goods and arrives at another store, parking lot monitor follows and calls for tow truck, thieves leave car go in store, truck tows car away, they come out with the goods and have no car to load.

There is another way to view this from the younger people's perspective. Now I'm a bit older and somewhat stuck in yesterday's prices, in fact, I started to grab a candy bar a while back but balked at the price, telling the cashier that's pretty steep for a candy bar. I didnt buy it because I still expect the same price as 20 years ago. That was at Home Depot BTW. If you made your living years ago and the price of a candy bar is of no consequence you get one if you want one. But if you are that 20 something on the bottom end of the payscale, with rent due, and you know the old car is just about done, you dont grab an overpriced candy bar. Few of those 20 somethings begrudge anyone doing well for themselves, but what discourages so many of them is that they cannot get by in any reasonable way on what they are paid even if they worked 80 hours a week like I have often done. And even if they bust their hump in hopes their effort might get noticed and they might get a raise, it wont still wont be enough to really live on. They will have to live in mom's basement till they are 40, and not mess up anything, bust their hump the whole time, and if the stars line up just right, and they have managed to outperform 15000 other employees that have come and gone to become store manager they might actually be able to afford to raise a kid. And let's face it, most of us are not cut out to manage a crew of 100. Whatever happened to the idea that if a person went out and did an honest day's work they could make an honest living? Ok here is the over-riding problem, all of the money is going to the top, there is not enough left to pay a living wage to the ones who are wearing out their bodies to do their job. Just have a look at executive pay relative to the average in any corporation over the past 40 years, right there is the problem. The pay structure needs to be flattened out a lot. I dont know how you fix that problem other than the executives themselves having a heart and refusing more pay than they can possibly spend, and turning around to their crew to see who has earned an honest living.

@@haihengh US citizen trying to make a living mowing grass or laying roof shingles is expected to abide by the tax code. If they were to get caught not paying taxes they can lose everything and even be imprisoned and they have no home country to escape to if that happens. If someone entered illegally or overstayed a visa and doesnt pay tax, gets in a wreck without any car insurance, shows up at the emergency room but never pays the bill, doesnt pay rent for months and uses every lie their Aunt taught them of how to get a bigger welfare check by fraud and worst case if they know they are going to be prosecuted for something, they sell everything they cannot ship and go back home with all the money they can grab on the way out. They can gamble on the risk of getting caught because they have sympathy on their side, they can play ignorant and they have a possibility of escape should they get caught. What would happen if a US citizen got caught not paying taxes, walking out on hospital bills, months worth of unpaid rent, car wrecks with no insurance, defrauding public assistance, in Viet Nam? Just imagine if 2000 US citizens showed up at the Viet Nam border every day with only the clothes on their back, not even any ID. Would they be able to eat beef steak every night that Viet Namese people paid for but cannot afford for themselves? There are ID cards scattered all over the ground just outside the US border, millions of them. Why would a person throw away their ID just prior to surrendering to US border patrol? Simple, they want to present themself as someone else, perhaps cause they got deported before and need a new identity to try it again. Now dont get me wrong, a lot of people come to the US and end up becoming citizens themselves by contributing and adopting their new home and doing all they can to help it thrive, but there are a lot who just want to gain all they can by any means possible and they dont care if they leave it in shambles. That is the kind of people who made the place they left undesirable in the first place and the US is ushering them in by the millions with little regard for whether they are likely to pay taxes and obey the law or not. If they break the law to get in, what would make anybody think they will abide by the law thereafter? 9 months later they dont show up for the hearing and nobody knows where or who they are. I agree the US government is effed and so are anyone who support it continuing to favor everyone else over it's own citizens. US is not unique in the trend to take much better care of foriegners than it's own, there seems to be a pandemic of governments in the west crushing their own people in favor of continued invasion. I'm sure there is plenty of goodess and beauty in Guatemala, I just dont want my state to become what Guatemala has become.

Currently, that’s not the case. I would also add that these younger people see the problems of the how businesses run today. All of us know the wage gap for the rich (CEOS, executives, shareholders) is like light years away from the normal person. You are also correct that the average employee at any age can never get ahead. It’s nearly impossible for anyone to make a decent living on honest work. It also unlikely that any of the greedy sodomites will ever agree to flattening out the their wages. I pray that there will be a conviction in those robber barons heads to think and lead with compassion for those under them. I don’t see that happening because Greed is what they live by. Shame!

If something is so important that it needs to be done, perhaps the person who needs it done should offer something better than at or near minimum wage for it. The fact of the matter is that companies like Home Depot struggle to find workers, not because people are lazy or entitled, but because the pay that these comapnies offer is complete crap. People can't live off of what a lot of these companies offer, and, as a result, are starting to look elsewhere for a source of income. Instead of taking a conventional job at a company like Home Depot, they might start doing something like driving for Uber instead. And, chances are they still end up poor whether they take the conventional job or drive for Uber, but at least driving for Uber gives someone flexibility that a conventional job can't match. It's part of the reason why these gig jobs are becoming increasingly popular.
