Not as uncommon as you might think, building on old cemeteries and the like is sadly a fairly common practice. If your lucky they actually removed the graves first, if your not and decide to expand a basement you might find "surprises". That or old landfills, they love to build on them because the land is cheap after all.

Way back, small communities would bury family members close by. Backyard close by. Because that's how it was done. The family kept track of who was where. But over time, the family dies out or moves away. The stones fall over, get covered up. The little graveyard disappears. Until someone has to dig up a basement....😮

I knew a boy when I was in primary school (different school, but were in the same club), in the 80's, whose dad was exposed to a MASSIVE amount of asbestos. I mean huge amount of asbestos exposure over just a year or two, as he was a builder/contractor for local government. He died within 10 years of exposure, he was exposed sometime in the 1970's, usually it's like 40+ years and died of Asbestosis. Then while I was at that school they found asbestos in the disused clocktower, we had 10 weeks worth of "Summer Holiday" (which the parents weren't happy with) instead of the usual 6 and they had to decontaminate and test the entire school. You don't mess with asbestos to any degree, but the whole house and they had multiple renovations over the years. WOAH!!

Both Canadian and US laws should hold these fly-by-night inspectors liable for missing so much. They work for the realtors in most cases and they don’t want to lose a deal. In addition, when code violations are found (per the code of that prior year), the city/county should be notified so that repairs much happen prior to sale.

@@wendwllhickey6426 And have taxes that discourage real-estate as an investment (except for houses that will be used by you and or/your family). A lot of this sloppy cover-up work comes from people buying houses just to make them pretty and sell them for a big payday. This is not the standard of work you would do on your own house. I saw it on a small house near me as well. They bought it, added exterior insulation, applied a very thin white coating, and sold it again a few months months later (probably for a ton more), one year later the coating is already peeling off in multiple places ...

I'm wondering if he had an inspector prepare a report, or had an inspection report prepared; maybe the seller just prepared the report himself.
@robertbrainard5651
@robertbrainard5651 7 ай бұрын
the problem is that contractors aren't all certified and even if they were, if you're using a contractor that's hired by the seller's realtor, bias gonna be applied. Also there are lots of buyers that like this couple that are STUPID. They didn't check foot to ass on this house to see if its good, they looked, saw how beautiful it looked but didn't bother to hire a expensive inspector to see if this house is worth buying, sometimes paying more gets you a more honest inspector.

@bluechang08
@bluechang08 9 ай бұрын
Home inspectors should carry liability insurance so when their reports inevitably go bad, the home owner has an outlet for compensation. It will make the home inspector accountable for their report because their liability insurance will skyrocket if not with the quantity of claims made against them, so instead of a quick run through with a pre filled report and the money in the back pocket (and currently no option to go after the inspector), the inspector actually spends a decent amount of time to check and verify everything they can. I also think that potential home owners need to go in with wide open eyes instead of using their heart and falling in love with a property - spend the money and get dedicated electrical, plumbing and heating reports done - anything found will give room for negotiation on cost, or the ability to walk away from a potential death trap as in the long run, the cost of these reports would be less than having to do remedial works after you've signed on the dotted line.

Homes built between 1850 and 1950 without a remodel, will have plaster/lathe walls. The plaster may have asbestos as the reinforcing fiber in it. Some older homes may have horse hair as the fiber in the plaster. Very old plaster may have asbestos as a natural part of the plaster. So you still have to be very careful. In the 1950 until drywall was invented, used expanded metal as the backing instead of lathe. (the metal will act as a Faraday cage and cause bad radio, TV, cell phone, WIFI reception).

I watch this video series in both amazement and horror. We lived in a house that had hidden the fact that the floor was completely separated from the house. You could see about an inch or 2 outside into daylight. When a person came to repair a electrical problem in another house they had to open up a wall. It was filled to the roof and down to the bottom with fungus and ugly mushrooms. It turned out the entire house was filled with bracket fungus, mushrooms and mold. Never let my inlaws or husband go to rent alone again. Cheap is never a rental bargain. And yes the heating was a total joke.

lol 15:29 reminds me of my Century home (built around 1880). Can do that in my living room. Built on the Canadian Shield so it has settled and not willing to risk any issues via jacking it up. 15:48 -- had that issue in bathroom on back room that someone added on. Crawlspace was dirt/stone and I cleaned it out, encapsulated it and added a jack post to try to take some "bounce" out of the floor. In that process the bathroom door no longer sticks. LOL

Odds are never would have called Mike and really doubtful they would have had the money to fix it them selfs...... With what Mike found. It kinda sounds better to pull the house down, and build new... But then that would be a bad TV show, so Mike and his crew get the "fun" (nightmare) job of fixing the full house. Looks like the only thing good in the house is the appliances and windows.

The bathroom contractor is top notch. He could have just done the reno and disappeared. But he was a pro and told them to fix the structure. That said, the inspector should have caught it. The floors were visible, no need to move furniture, or lay down. He could have seen the amount the walls separated from the floor, or the wedge in the kitchen cabinets. With what fixing the house cost a shaman and an exorcist would have been the better way to go

I suspect the main reason they don't a lot of the time is zoning. Around here, have a lot of homes that are built places they can't rebuild. Too close to roads, etc. So you're stuck fixing a total wreck or moving, since if you tear it down the lot might not meet modern codes, and you're left selling empty, unusable space. That's the big downside with really old homes, at least around here. Also, if you have a mortgage that can be an issue. You can't destroy the value of the existing building so long as the bank owns it, so the bank will let it get fixed but not demolished and rebuilt. There's a ton of issues that make it so you're forced to repair garbage that frankly should be leveled and redone fully. Loads of headaches. @@SeithonJetter

If only we could all hire Mike Holmes. state legislators passed laws protecting Inspectors as most States don’t allow lawsuits.A friend had to spend thousands replacing old broken pipes and fireplace issues. Fix the house and never move.

Asbestos is the most dangerous material ever discovered. My grandfather died from mesothelioma. He was a shipwright by trade, and during WWII he was working for the Pentagon as a civilian contractor lagging the pipework on US naval vessels. Two US military police officers, (in civies no uniforms were ever seen) would knock on the back door, tell him to pack a bag, and he would be gone. No-one knew how long it would be. Mum told us that grandad would be there for dinner, but not brekkie the next morning. Apparently there were a few aussies doing that kind of work, but it was all very hush-hush,,, official secrets act stuff being war time and all... The lagging product he used contained Blue asbestos, supposedly the worst type... He died in 1959. It wasn't until the 80s that we realised just how bad the stuff was. 🙃🐨🇦🇺

There should be some way to censor or fine home inspectors that lie in the new home inspections that were used to determine the sale of the home.

Asbestos is perfectly fine, and will be no problem, so long as it is not disturbed. If it is, the fibers can become airborne, that is when the health issues can occur. However, it the asbestos insulation is in good shape, and not disturbed, it is fine.

There was asbestos in the plaster, so they were at risk anyway.

At least by removing everything all the problems will be fixed but at the cost of the work you can buy a good sized house or build one.
