For musician Teitur, singing is about giving away a piece of yourself to others. "If your intentions are to impress people or to get the big applause at the end," he says, "then you are taking, not giving." Listen as he plays on stage at TED2015, offering two songs about love, distance and home.
TEDTalks is a daily video podcast of the best talks and performances from the TED Conference, where the world's leading thinkers and doers give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes (or less). Look for talks on Technology, Entertainment and Design -- plus science, business, global issues, the arts and much more.

I saw Teitur in the title and knew I recognized the name somewhere. I listened to him play and I knew I had heard him before. I checked him out on spotify and found his first album Poetry and Airplanes, released in 2003. The first song I played, Josephine, was shockingly familiar; so familiar that I was flooded with emotions. It reached me on a deep level and brought back emotions and memories I thought I forgot. I realized that I know every single song, because I grew up with his CD on road-trips and during dinner parties and while just relaxing at home. I'm so glad to have found him again; he was a part of my life nestled in all the hard parts of my childhood that kept my sanity at bay when times were hard. It's crazy how well you can remember songs you haven't heard in years. That's the power of CDs; I don't know if our knew way of listening to music has that same effect.

The fact that he sings instead of talks doesn't detract from his message in the end. I'm glad TED changes things up every now and again.

not all learning is science and facts. Sometimes learning is just looking at the world through someone else's eyes and, in this case, it happens to be a musician. All I see in the comments is negativity and that's slightly disheartening.

What is its intention is like asking why. Intention is a better word. In Polish why is asked by saying for what. To fathom is to interpret as to perplex is to perceive.

+captainandthelady Of course. Such is the balance of life, however I have no doubt he was referring to motivation. Giving with no expectation will always return, and if you are not "locked in" to what those rewards should be, you are open to much higher rewards.
