Home Landscaping - Replacing Old Plants - All About Nandinas.
In this video I remove some old Gulfstream Nandinas and replace them with Obsession™ Nandinas that have amazing red new foliage all season long. There are lots of new exciting varieties of shrubs available now and if your not satisfied with what you have it is not hard to replace your old tired landscape shrubs. This is part of my home landscape projects.

My husband has a strange dislike for all Nandinas. We had several around the pool area and he cut them to the ground, twice. They keep coming back. Should I tell him to dig up the roots? Nah, I'm just gonna watch and see how long it takes him to figure it out! LOL

I am amazed and how easy you can remove your nandina. I am having a very difficult time removing some that spread three feet in my yard down a fence and three feet into the neighbors yard along the same fence. He is spraying his. I am digging mine up since spring using a pick axe, shovel, and some hand tools. Sometimes it feels like an archaeology dig!

I think a lot (all?) of the negative comments on this thread about Nandinas have to do with Nandinas domestica. That variety should be avoided, and it should not be sold in stores. The problem for some is owning/purchasing a property where this variety was planted many years ago. They are a tough plant to remove. A neighbor has a 5 year-old Obsession Nandina that looks nice in the landscape that has never had flowers or berries. It is also a well-contained plant, roughly 2.5'x2.5' in mostly all-day sun with minimal pruning so far (a few long branches taken to the base of the shrub). They actually moved it several feet a couple of years ago, and the root system was easy to dig up. Not overly deep (less than 1') and not too wide.

"The latest and greatest" comment tickled me. We're buying a 60 yr old house, and most of the 'foundation' plants are considered invasives here now. They're lovely and healthy though, and most are on the north side of the house.

Nandinas! Arrrgh! I'm digging them up now, the stalky, shooty, variety and I'm ~16" into the ground and there's no movement at all to the stump. I'm 3/4 of the way around and I'm thinking about dynamite at this point!

Guys, the previous home owner planted these by the pool area. Talk about struggling! The roots are everywhere! Under the pool concrete. I’ve been working on killing it for 9 months. It’s impossible! I don’t have a clue how he was able to dig these out so easy! I’m researching how to remove them. Any tips you have please let me know!

Love Nandina and use the sprays of berries in Christmas decorations. But keep in mind the berries are poisonous, especially for birds. Nandina is not a native and our Cedar Waxwings will flock to them in late winter, stripping the berries. So please after the first of the year consider stripping the berries. Won't take but a few minutes.

HILARIOUS. I could maybe understand taking the old Nandinas out to replace with an entirely different species of plant like Oleander, but to plant Nandina again, C'mon. The Nandina I have is slow growing, so it will probably take five to ten years for his plants to reach the size of the old ones. I guess he really wanted the new variety plant like some people want the new model car.

I'm in Dallas and just planted 2 obsessions and 4 lemon limes. I'm not sure I planted them low enough after watching you. They said to leave 1 to 2 in above-ground and I did and then lightly covered with mulch. Should I dig them up and plant again? Also my house is north-facing and this time of the year they only get a few of Morning Sun before noon. The nursery said that should be okay but now I'm concerned after watching this 😶

It appears he used his shovel to measure the distance he desired. His shovel may be 48 inches. Gulfstream Nandina's get 3-4 ft. tall with a 2-3ft. spread. Tags say plant at least 3 feet apart. Jim says the sizes given on tags are about maintaining and most plants will grow larger than tag measurements. I planted mine 3 ft. apart. 🌱👋🏼😊

I have a question. I have 2 firestorm heavenly bamboo nandinas. I planted them about 15 years ago in a flower bed under my front windows. All of a sudden they look dead. I don't understand what happened. The only thing, was termite treatment behind them in the dirt, up against the house last year. But, other plants in the bed are fine. Help😩

Hello Jim. Is it too late for me to plant the "Obsession Nandina" in my area (zone 7). I recently saw them at a garden center in my area and am tempted to buy a few. I love the striking red tops on this plant. I also read on the growing instructions that it requires 3 to 6 hours of morning sun, but I am gonna go by your video and would plant them in the full afternoon sun.

I love Nandina's, but every one I have ever had suddenly, fell over, even though the folliage was still great...... at the root level, all the roots were gone and only a nub at the base of the plant........... I think "voles" are the culprit......... what can I do to avoid this?

I don't understand, because my Gulfstream nandinas are dwarf plants that don't grow higher than 3 ft. What am I missing? Also, I'm looking for a nandina that has color, grows to about 6 ft. but does not produce berries (as my Gulfstream ones don't, bought in 2016-2017). Suggestions? This video is good instruction on planting any kind of plant. Thank you.

Yeah, I've been seeing tags on the Gulfstream Nandina the last couple of years, and they state at most 3' high and wide. I do wonder if there the latest are an "improved" version of the older Gulfstream Nandina. I'm not sure.

I just viewed the video on obsession nandina and this video where you are removing large nandinas from the side of your previous house. In this video, you review several nandina varieties. I am replacing purple Muhlenbergia that is not as vigorous as in previous seasons. I like both the obsession and blush pink because of the continuous color. Which do you think is better for a backdrop -background to 3-foot tall boxwoods? There is plenty of sun in the space.

You said you will only need to prune the nandinas every 4 years or so. I was under the impression that pruning on nandinas and all shrubs was supposed to be done annually? Can you clarify that?
@JimPutnam
@JimPutnam 6 жыл бұрын
+LoriLori Hallelujah There are no requirements to prune shrubs. Some do benefit from yearly pruning to keep them full or flowering heavier, but most of the time we are doing it just to control height or width.

@JimPutnam
