FYI: Alcohol exhaust is only carbon dioxide with a tiny bit of water vapor - about the same amount a human gives off per burner. It's probably the safest fuel I know of.

When you add the hunk of stovepipe you need to reduce the diameter to about half of what it is where it comes out. The decrease and diameter should increase pressure, or air flow coming out of the stove pipe

Good idea, thanks for taking the time to do the video. I have many times cooked with my Trangia in the vestibule of my tent when it was rather cool and then left the stove to burn for some heat. It is amazing how much warmth the stove will create. I will be trying a couple versions of what you are doing. Thanks for the inspiration.

Use some washers for spacers and place a ceramic tile on top of the original set up, without the heat riser. It would act more as a space heater, after the food is cooked. It would keep coffee, soup and yourself warmer.

Nice one! Thanks for sharing. I use alcohol in a decorationheater for indoor use...it's both nice to look at, and also gives out a fair amount of heat...completely safe. I feel more insecure when using a powerful propane stove for wokpans in my kitchen..not worried about passing out by lack of oxygen or so, i keep a window open slightly just for extra safety....but it's so hot my curtains almost caught fire a few days ago while i was cooking 😅

That's a good idea but for a space heater you need some mass it heats up the mass and then it radiates into the room. In your case I think plaster of Paris would work well you can make it into any shape like the can or pipe or just a plate and you could take it off ro cook on it either one maybe that will help good video though.

In your house none of this is cheap for long hours of heat. This burns out in minutes, requiring more pricey alcohol snd constant care. Kerosene heater burns 8 hrs for $4 on pump kerosene and produces 1000x more heat. In a tent..is this safe: Till you knock it over and the flame follows the spreading alcohol soaked ground cloth or worse yet nylon tent tub floor trapping you in melting flaming tent. If the tent is canvas, just use a RR lantern. Makes more heat, safer, longer, cleaner and is meant to survive being jostled in a barn. Don't like kerosene, then a candle lantern or two.. even a candle in a jar. Cat heater is $20 and a $4 propane can. It is engineered NOT TO KILL YOU. Nylon tent...nothing...just wrap up and go to bed.

Then pour in denatured alcohol To saturation and put the lid on tight. Then make a upper chimney like yours to fit. When I got to the blind I would pry off the lid and light the alcohol and set the chimney on the burner. It should burn quiet with no smell.

I have an old class A RV. Propane is a premium to use regularly for heat. What I would like to do is a permanently mounted cabinet with one of these inside. Ofcourse use cotton balls to keep alcohol from splashing around. Would the fumes be a concern with it being ventless? The RV is not that drafty. It is very tight. Maybe slightly open window for fresh air if fumes are toxic?

like what corey said. I've done something similar to what you're asking. There isn't much chance of it killing you, but you might notice a difference in the air after a few hours. It's hard to describe exactly.. but it just feels different. Doesn't make you sick or dizzy or anything, and a stove like this will only burn for maybe 45 minutes tops. Should you actually fall unconscious for some reason it will definitely burn out before you die.

MatoNupai Hello! I never read what’s n rubbing alcohol, what I’m asking is, is denatured, methanol, grain alcohol...the same as rubbing alcohol??? If not, where do I get it??? Seeing how u have many years of experience with this, may I ask ur advice? I live n a house (sticks and bricks) n winter I do not turn on heat, layered up, I’m okay to -30, sometimes less if the wind isn’t blowing, when I feel too cold I turn on a small heater fan. I’m very frugal and do with little, but getting older, the cold gets colder. Question: a few years now I’ve toyed with the idea of taking thick mil plastic, draping it like a tent to the width and length of a van, using this method or candles to heat it. Ur advice on this please. Thank u
@ogi22
@ogi22 4 жыл бұрын
@@joybickerstaff194 Every alcohol burns. Alcohol is just a chain of carbon-hydrogen with OH (hydroxy group). As MatoNupai noticed, the colour of the flame is an indication of "cleaniness" of the burn. Bright blue flame means that fuel has enough oxygen to burn all carbon into CO2 and water. Red flame and sud means there is not enough oxygen and flame releases not completly burned atoms of carbon and and carbon monoxide. The only thing incorrect is that you can burn "safely" any fuel if you change all carbon in it into a CO2. It doesn't matter if it is methyl, ethyl or propyl alcohol. But every burning process will release also other chemicals, because air and fuel contains more things in it. So you can safely burn isopropyl alcohol in the same way you can burn methyl or ethyl alcohol. It only requires more oxygen. Improperly designed or manufactured (aka home made) stoves have much higher chance to have this redox reaction to be partial. Which means not all carbon will be burned completly and it will produce CO - carbon monoxide which is DEADLY for us. Also clean burning things in an enclosed small space is a bad idea. CO2 produced by ANY burning process can also kill you. If it gets to 10% concentration in your small, air tight bag/cube, you are dead too. The only good thing is that you will feel bad, short of breath before it reaches deadly concentration. Every room that is heated with any flame, must be ventilated.
