This is the log splitter I built about ten years ago. It uses a Honda GX390 engine rated at 13 horse power and powers a 22 GPM Haldex pump. It uses three cylinders. One for the log lift, one for the splitting ram and one for the four way wedge. Don't try to build one of these at home in less you are prepared to spend twice what the ones at the box stores cost. But... they don't have a log lift, a four way wedge, a 25 gallon hydraulic tank, an outfeed table, a cup holder, and real steel!

My box store brand is Champion. It rocks with a 26 gallon

yes, 26 gallon is good. My hydraulic fluid gets hot after a few hours run time even with 20+ gallons of hydraulic fluid.

You are a very smart man, I was wondering why you needed two valves for the ram & then I saw the auto return. Damn smart sir. Also loved the adjustable 4-way & deck @ the end. Work smarter not harder. I may have to cheat a little & copy some of your work. That's good ole American ingenuity at work, my hats off to you sir.

Allen, thanks for the compliment. But I borrowed this isea from the very well thought out and built Timberwolf Splitters.

i dont mind having auto return only on the return.. when you split you dont want you hands on the log.. that goes 10000 times good and 1 time bad..

Pretty good design 👍🏻 A couple things to note, the type of beam you used for main construction is called “wide flange beam.” I-beam has a much different cross section and they are both built for different applications. Also on your splitting blades, consider having a pinned connection to the small cylinder as that should take care of the lifting you are experiencing. Cheers.

Dustin, Thank you. That's a good point on the solid connection to the wedge. But.... I need to make it easy to remove... some of the big wheels with lots of knots have problems when I use the four way wedge, so I need to have it easy to remove. Not an issue unless I have knotty wood. And not little knots....

hi there nice setup you did a nice build . do you know about surplus center that is where we get our hoses john

John, Yes, and I've bought from them before. This was painless.... I brought the entire machine to the hydraulic store and they cut/crimped each hose to fit. As you know, many of the hose connections are indexed since the hose doesn't twist. I could have used different adapters, but I didn't!! Hope to see you soon.

Any chance you could post the specs on that self return valve you used for your splitting ram? I have been designing one of these and I'm looking for the actual name of that valve, there are a few other makers out making similar machines, all $10k plus for one similar to yours. Excellent work and a nice machine!

My valve is a Prince Auto Cycle valve with "power beyond" so I could attach and power the 4 way wedge. This part here is what I have exactly: RD525MMEE5A4B1. I bought them from these guys: www.splitez.com/hydraulic_valves.html They were great to deal with and very helpful. Good luck!

I'm guessing you will be building a 6-way anvil in the near future . It's a nice rig you should consider tallying up all the components and their specs and selling it as plans. Yes people will pirate it, but you should make a few bucks on your engineering effort.

Thanks Raul. Well... the reality is I could not (or didn't chose to..) buy a commercially built splitter from Timberwolf... I modeled this after their splitter and that's where I got the thought of the log lift. And lifting the big wheels up is just not fun like when I was 25, or 35, or 45, or 55!!! Sadly, the price of steel is making fun projects like this really expensive now!

You need to change hose shops. I just had three 20" hoses made for under $85.

I'm not saying I got a bargain on the hoses, but price depends on the diameter of the hose... 2" hoses with fittings are expensive!!!!

I’ve been wanting to build a splitter for myself and really like the machine you’ve built. How did you go about the design and measurements? Just from scratch? Or a set of plans? Any advice is appreciated! Thanks!

Hi, I modeled after the Timberwolf splitters. But they cost big $$$! I did end up buying the 4 way wedge from them. Regarding design, I designed it around the steel beam I had. The log lift took some trial and error. The hydraulic pressures are not too hard to figure out. Most of it you can learn on the internet. There are some companies who sell valves and cylinders as a kit. Thanks for watching!
