It's quick, clean, easy and very cheap!
The difference between this method and most others is in 'blitzing' the paper. This means the paper doesn't have to be soaked, pulped and dried before it can be used. This way it can be made in any amount at any time. The mix is 50/50. I hope you find this useful and I hope it saves you money. All the best......Tom

This video is VERY appreciated. I have always liked taking the DIY approach. Many of the modeling products out there are just regular products that are repackaged as modeling supplies and then marked up 500% for 10% of the regular product. Plus not everyone in all parts of the world has access to these materials so it's great to see how you can get similar, same or better results using some store products and little imagination.

Cheers for that Tom. Now we know where all the toilet rolls went in Lockdown. Seen other ways of making your own sculptamold but yours is 'simply the best' and easiest way. Like the health and safety tip too, so important ! As a builder I've got all the tools, but never thought they'd get used for this !!! Brilliant. Keep up the good work buddy. xx

That's a great way to shred TP ! Instead of plaster, you can also use white glue mixed with water, to make a nice mushy, sculptable paper mache. A dollop of dish soap helps to mix it, so it's not so dry. I use approx. 70% water to 30% glue, When it dries, it's as hard as tough plastic!

Thank you for this, i am going to deffinately use in my future builds ! No idea how yet but will be of tremendous help. (Here plaster is extremely cheap, so this is an awesome idea, however i think ill replace the water with a special concrete primer) I have recently tried using herbs mixed with concrete primer used for bonding materials, herbs, and PvA, no water. I will try using this, with my own mix and adding a concrete filler alternative of the rubbing alcohol too , along with PvA, primer and plaster/paper. P.S primer is similiar to PvA but it hardens in much harder form, seems with PvA it gets absurdly strong.

You can substitute cellulose insulation (the kind that's blown in between stud cavities) for the toilet paper and save the hassle of shredding with the drill. In the US it's available at DIY stores (Home Depot, Lowes) in 19 lb bags for about $13.00 (10 pounds UK). Great channel and videos. Thanks!

Just tried this, worked a treat, set up quicker than sculptamould too. Just one question though, do you add plaster of paris as you mix with water or premix it dry and store? I mixed mine dry first but did find the PoP did settle to the bottom of the container so when I dished out some for mixing with water I had to remix to get even quantities.
@tomjenssen7486
@tomjenssen7486 6 жыл бұрын
Great news :) Yes, it sets very quickly..I usually make a small mix at a time. For mixing, I put the paper in the bowl first then sprinkle the PoP all over it...add water and mix. If it feels like too much paper, I add a bit more PoP. After a few mixes I started to get a feel for it. But yes, I keep the paper in the bucket and take a handful as I need it. If you do decide to store it in a dry mix you'll need to give it good shake for 30 seconds before mixing. :)

Tom, how smooth were you able to get the mixture? I was thinking about blending the pulp mix before adding the plaster. As well, did you try this with hydrocal?
@tomjenssen7486
@tomjenssen7486 4 жыл бұрын
Hi. The blend is much the same as the branded product. I use different ratios of pulp:paper. For light weight filler I use more pulp and for a smooth finish I use a little extra plaster. I haven't tried this with hydrocal but I find it very light weight as it is. It's also worth noting that this mix sets very fast as it doesn't have the PVA powder that's added to the branded. 'Luke's APS' channel also has a similar video where he blends the pulp, it's worth checking out. I blitz mine dry as it allows me to make a quick mix as and when I need some. Hope this is helpful. All the best....Tom

Hi Tom, I just started building diorama! I enjoy watching and learning something new from each video, How ever, I do work a lot with plaster of Paris and the time that I have using it after mixing is less that couple of minute, then it gets hard quick!! is it something that you are experiencing also? There are tons of plaster of Paris in Home Depot, and Lowe's and all the other hardware stores in US!
@tomjenssen7486
@tomjenssen7486 Жыл бұрын
Hi there and thanks for your comment. Try adding a small amount of pva to your mix to extend working time. I recommend doing a few test samples first. Alternatively, use plaster for your main structure then switch to spackle for the surface details and fine carving. I hope this is helpful. All the best....Tom

The 1.36kg bag of Sculptamold was £12. The 3kg bag of PoP was £6. Then 9 rolls of tp for £2. I make at least 3 times as much without using all the rolls. So, around £7 for mine vs £30+ for the original. I use a lot of this so the savings multiply.
