I always liked Brendon's relationship with his mom. Normally when the main character of the show is a child, they'd barely interact with their mom or the mom would be kinda like a villain who didn't allow the main character to do fun stuff but in Home Movies Brendon and his mom would almost always have a good time, have fun and stuff like a mom and her child should do

All the children in this show act like normal adults so the dynamics are stranger than usual

One of the things the creators of the show took seriously were the personalities of the children. They didn't want them to feel like stupid kids but relatable people. In a nutshell Brendon Small believed at a certain point you're just mocking kids instead of representing them or somethin like that. They did a good job at making them feel realistic, even if you forget their only eight sometimes.

Yeah it very clearly did not belong in regular cartoon circulation. There was occasional swearing, heavy themes of job insecurity, alcohol abuse, sex and degradation of relationships, the cost of getting older, etc. Regular cartoons can touch on these topics, but you have to be very careful. Home Movies was not, at least in Season 2 and 3. Season 1 is just a fun little cartoon romp, Season 4 is more a send off and again just having fun.
