Welcome back to the Ultimate Tech Hub. On this episode we will show you how to install 2 different wireless routers in one single home network. We chose 2 different brand routers for this video. One router is a Linksys and other router is a Netgear. UPDATE: I made an error with the IP Address for the Secondary Router so make that IP address 192.168.1.2 not 192.168.2.1. Sorry about that I swapped the numbers on accident. This video is only about setting up 2 routers and not about any advanced settings. Router 2 acts as an access point. I will make another video about LAN to WAN connection between 2 routers. And thank you for all who pointed that out! Much appreciated! Thanks for watching!! If you have any questions please leave them in the comments below. Thank you for being a part of The Ultimate Tech Hub Team and if you haven't Subscribed yet please do its free. And if you like this video give a thumbs up and share it. Thanks again for watching the Ultimate Tech Hub Channel! As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualified purchases.

Most all routers are completely self-negotiating. So all you have to do is plug the 2nd router into a LAN and you are done. I have 4 routers all from different companies without issue and no wifi channels have nothing to do with IP conflicts they are not even related. If a router is upstream of another router it just switched to Access Point mode and follows what the upstream router commands.

Question if I may? Right now I have a Midco setup and that means I have the modem and router as an all-in-one unit. However I also have an ORBI system I would like to put to use. So, I have an open port on the back of the MIDCO modem/router and I would like to plug my ORBI main unit into that and use it like a second network...with different IP address, on channel 11 and a different SSID. I also have the ORBI satellite that came bundled with my Orbi purchase, so in my mind once I create that second network...then the satellite (extender, basically) I could put in my basement and get better coverage down there. The Orbi is Netgear as you probably already know. I have watched your video and many others so I get the whole process, but I wonder if I will run into a hiccup since my Primary router is a combo modem/router? I cannot find any information on doing this procedure. I hope you reply as others have not. Thank you for the great video!

Hey there UTH, apologies if this is answered already - Question - does the Primary and Secondary routers need to be connected via an ethernet cord OR can you go through settings changes on your secondary - and on a cable router just plug into another room say in the basement and essentially have two cable wifi routers in your home without the hassle of running a 300' ethernet between the two?

For the purposes of this video you need to connect via ethernet. However it really depends on your router. Some routers allow for mesh wifi setup for wireless connectivity to the main router. I have some videos on that subject if your interested let me know I can send you a link.

I'm setting up a network for a second home in a different town than my primary home network. At my primary I use a nighthawk router and have all of my lights, thermostat, stereo, TV, etc., working off of it. A few years ago, I had a job out of state and set up my network in my condo there with a nighthawk and gave it exactly the same network name and password as my primary home, so that any device (even my Chef IQ thermometers) were automatically "at home" at either location. Now, I have to set up at a secondary residence; however, the provider in that local is a "Direct TV-like" provider (Viasat) that installs their own modem (model RG1100). I would like to connect my nighthawk directly into their router and set it up the same as my nighthawk back at my primary residence so that all of my network devices feel "at home" when I'm at either my primary or 2ndary home. I plugged it in to Viasat's router and it is acting as a router, but it doesn't have internet access. I haven't started messing with the settings yet, but it seems my scenario is similar to this one except, I don't want to use my second router as a network boost, I want to allow both the provider's router and my nighthawk to generate their own networks, but use my nighthawk as my preferred network (which will be set up with the same name and password as my primary residence). It seems all I really need is to set up the Viasat modem/router to allow internet sharing to my nighthawk...is it that simple?

You can connect to router 2 lan port. Network speed is determined by the age of the router and the age of your computer and of course your ISP max speed. It shouldn't affect your speed very much if at all.

I made the first 3 octets(numbers) the same & made the 4th one in router 2 ip address 1 above the one in router 1. Change the dhcp pool start to something above that in router 1 if not already, say 10 higher & turn off dhcp in router 2. That way i can go to either routers ip address & manange that router if i want to.

Does having the SSID names the same on both routers not affect devices connecting to the best connection? I read that they will connect to the router that answers the request first and not necessarily the router with the fastest connection so the 2 routers should always have different SSIDs.

Just curious, why did you put the management address of the second device on a separate subnet on what appears to be the same broadcast network? Also how does selecting a different channel avoid IP address conflict? Finally if the second device is not routing, then it’s not the router in this setup.

One question though: is this a solution for offices where employees can walk around without having to manually switch between the two WiFi signals? The Linksys Velop does not have the ability to create 2 subnets on the LAN. If you want this you need a router with this capability. One low cost router that has this function is the Ubiquiti Edgerouter X. With this router you can have multiple subnets and put in firewall rules to allow or deny traffic between the subnets.

So is this a way that I can have the 2nd router in another part of my house and have its wifi set to 5g? I'd like to get some faster data coming from my computer that will be used for VR. The computer is near my original router in an office room and it's hardwired. I'm assuming since the 2nd router will also be hardwired that the data can have a nice fast flow from the computer through to the 2nd router. Then maybe if I have the 2nd router set to 5g wifi and I'm using the Oculus Quest 2 in that same room, then maybe the speed will be nice for some PCVR to the Quest 2?

If you want to use a different band like the 5ghz band for a different area then you can set that name to something different and just log into that network. My router that sits by my tv on the first floor is an older nighthawk R7000P What would you recommend? I was thinking about buying a newer nighthawk and move the older one to the basement. Or I thought about just using those unified wall access points all over the house and use a switch in the living rm and family rm for wired devices. (TV, Fire Stick, PS5, etc.) I appreciate it. Yes it is, but you have to poke around the configuration wizard. Personally, I feel it's easier to get the device mac address you would like to limit and throttle the device. Thanks for video. Can you explain the difference I will have increasing the last octet by 1 rather than the third octet. So many videos advising either way.
@UltimateTechHub
@UltimateTechHub 3 жыл бұрын
Yes there are videos that show either way. I've even seen a website wikihow that shows the third octet increasing by 1. But you need the 2nd router to have an address range in between 192.168.1.1 thru 192.168.1.254 that keeps both routers in the same network. Changing the 3rd octet puts the 2nd router into a different network. If your 1st router has an IP address of 192.168.1.1 then use 192.168.1.2 for router 2. I hope this clarifies this. Sorry for accidentally swapping the numbers in the video. Thanks for watching and keep me posted if you have any issues.
@TurboSpeedWiFi
@TurboSpeedWiFi 3 жыл бұрын
@@UltimateTechHub Great explanation. Changing the 3rd octet is great if you want the second router on a separate network. Some videos show creating a guest network this way. They plug the primary router into the WAN port of the secondary router. This creates a double NAT isolating the two networks from seeing each other. I am personally not a fan of this technique but it does work. Of course this assumes that we are using a /24 (255.255.255.0) subnet mask.

Connect LAN-to-LAN is my recommendation. LAN-to-LAN: This extends your existing network connection and SSID to include the second router. LAN-to-LAN connectivity allows you to share files between devices regardless of which router they connect to. LAN-to-WAN: Creates a second network within the main network which allows you to place restrictions on any devices that connect to it and therefore is a good idea if you wish to isolate certain devices. A LAN-to-WAN setup doesn’t support the sharing of files across the two separate networks. This is why I choose LAN-to-LAN. Thanks for watching!
