Ventoy is a great alternative to Rufus that runs on Linux and Windows. Once you do initial prep of the USB stick, you just drag over the ISO images. Pretty slick.

Great suggestions. I'm rebuilding my NAS this week, and it seems more difficult to spec' full ECC than it was 10 years ago when I put the original system together with Supermicro mobo, ECC UDIMMs and Intel i3 CPU w/ ECC support. Using user benchmark as a comparison between intel and amd is a risky business.. They are obviously anti AMD and their results are always skewed in favour of intel in comparisons. So if they comeout even in the comparisons in real life it means a win for AMD.

Be careful! I found out a problem with the NVME Kingston A2000, it's crashing randomly in Linux OS like Proxmox. It seems to have something to do with Kingstons PowerSaving settings and Kingston released a firmware update for the A2000 series to get rid of this problem! Man, my server consists of 2 e5-2470's from 2012, 10 years old, but it still does really well for my use case, but the top PCIE slot doesn't work with x16 length cards, it just wont post, but x8 or lower it works fine for some reason., I just need more storage.

Welcome to PVE :) I'm running 3 VMs @ home: 1. OPNSense with Sensei; 2. OMV 5 with URbackup; 3. WS2019 as DC and UniFi controller. All that on 4590T with 16 ram, 120GB SSD, 1TB HDD for backups. The PC is running on 12V from my solar setup :)

I would now recommend AMD Ryzen 7 1700 as they can be bought for very cheap and are amazing CPUs , pair that with some good value RAM and some SSDs, i would recommend using Samsung 850 to 850 EVO SSDs, then a nice power efficient power supply, be sure to calculate what each individual component uses in your server then times the power draw by 1.5x then total all power and once again times by 1.5x to not only give you a little bit of head room but also to make sure all components have sufficient enough power bandwidth! :D

I am using the i5 10400 and 32GB of ram and samsung 500gb 870 evo plus nvme in my home server. Proxmox with 3 ubuntu server vms (pi hole, mail server with iredmail, minecraft server) and 2 windows 10 pro vms (used for remote access). Its so good. I snaged it up for 140EUR and what was a deal for me is that it has integrated graphics. I have another server i5 6500 that runs only windows server 2022 for active dir and as a nas server and as well as a vpn (all home computers are windows as you see)

What about running proxmox on a fanless miniPC (for permanently running TrueNAS/Unraid and similar always-on services) and integrate the main PC as second server for virtualizing Windows and other operating systems for heavy load applications? Is this possible? The MiniPC would then be zfs network storage, a backup system. If this is possible could you make a howto? :)

Have any of you tried to run the VE on a 12th gen Intel machine? The new hybrid CPUs have P-Cores and E-Cores and I’m not sure if Debian is able to see them. If Intel is going in this direction, then all future CPUs will have the similar characteristics. Apparently the future Intel Enterprise CPUs (Xeon) will use the LGA1800 socket which will almost identical to the LGA1700 of the Alder Lake. So I guess at one point Proxmox will have to follow the trend with the new generation CPUs. I ask a Proxmox guru like you: Can we install VE on a 12th gen motherboard and take advantage of 12th gen. full functionality?

A comment about data corruption. Its really important to know when data is corrupted because backup retention is not indefinite. If you find out too late, then its not in the backup and the data wont be recoverable. (Always scrub your data)

Hi. I am my way to make this same build but I am checking around for motherboard now. Does ECC works correct on your motherboard? Many motherboards accept ECC-memory but they are runnit it as non-ECC.

Would you recommend running a 3400g if only setting up a NAS for backup and a plex server?

I've had poor experiences with Dell workstations, between acting as dust magnets to the point cleaning it required masks or looking away when taking an air compressor to the inside, and proprietary components making replacements nigh impossible.

most consumer intels don't support ECC while all Ryzen CPUs do( though not all AM4 mainboards). You can run an AMD rig with no GPU, you'll just have no graphical ouput besides a tty. This is enough if SSH and webservers are all you need(proxmox).

A redundant hard drive is not something specific to ZFS, it's just RAID... ZFS brings a _TON_ of other useful features, that are not dependant on RAID arrays (as in they come through the file system, not the hardware used. Also, RAID5 and RAID6 in btrfs is still unstable and is not to be used unless for testing pruposes (or if there is an easily accessible backup of the data stored on the array available). Also, the (supposed, I run it and will not run non-ECC RAM with ZFS just to be safe)) benefit of ECC with ZFS arrays is not connected with software RAID arrays, but to the fact that ZFS stores checksums in RAM. Running a scrub with corrupted RAM could cause a 'scrub of death', destroying the data in the array. But apparently this is the same for most filesystems as well.

AMD CPUs are also more power efficient, especially if u look at the 11th gen furnace. you might see an Intel CPU at 65W and an AMD one at 65W and think they consume the same power, but that's not true, as intel's TDP is calculated at base clocks, while AMD's one at their boost, so there is a significant power consumption difference. However with precision boost enabled (as well as Intel's similar), it will also push further than the rated TDP for as much as it can, but that's beside the point.

This was a great video. However, I need to repurpose an old Dell XPS 8700 PC. It has an I7-4790 with 4 cores and 8 threads It can take up to 32 GB of non-ECC Ram I want to use it to store family pictures and videos and as a plex server... What's your power consumption with this hardware?

The story about ECC was very confusing. If you run non-ecc memory any file system might be destroyed by intermittent errors. Also ext4 and ntfs use free memory to store disk records, disk administration and log entries. If they are corrupted in the memory and written back to disk, the results might be catastrophic. Intermittent memory errors will destroy any file system. If you want to avoid the minimal chance of intermittent memory errors, use ECC memory for any file system. Of course, if you use 64GB of memory, the chance on memory errors will be 4 times higher than with 16GB of memory. I have confidence in my non-ECC memory and for more than 4 years I use ZFS without any issue on desktop with 16GB DDR4 (3000MHz); on laptop with 8GB DDR3 (1333MHz) and on my Pentium 4 backup-server with 1.5GB DDR (400MHz). The one time I had memory issues with one of the four 512MB sticks, the Pentium 4 crashed during start-up, when passing the 1GB boundary :) Which show that it is wise to run a memory test after changing memory or in case of doubt.

Very cool video, however there's one caveat : never use a normal SSD for your ZFS volumes, even for caching ! ZFS is very intensive on read and write, and it will kill your non-pro drives very rapidly. Apart from that, I built my new homelab about two months ago and just found out your video, I am glad I did it right because my setup is quite similar to yours !

In my opinion, ZFS isn't worth it for home systems. It requires INSANE amounts of resources and gives back very little. Amahi, on the other hand, can run on a single 1ghz thread with 1gb of ram and do pretty much the same thing. And as long as you make backups or use raid you should be fine for data redundancy.
