Hi guys! I am so glad you are here with me today. In this addition of Home Short Tips, I'm repairing a water damaged window sill in my bathroom. I forgot to mention this in the video but I hung another shower curtain over the window until it tried completely, this way we could still use the shower without further damage to the sill. Enjoy!

Jessenia you did a great job as a novice. The filler foam was a great idea and the filler with the flex just adds to to brilliance of it all. I can tell you did your homework before trying it on your own. A girl after my own heart lol. Thanks for sharing. I am sure this will help many people!

I think the flex seal was definitely the answer to the problem. You did a great job fixing it.. The window looks good & although it’s not ideal to have a window there, I don’t even have a window in my br so if I did I probably would just have put a shower curtain over it to begin with 😂 👍

I would highly suggest that you look in the wall cavity underneath this window, you would probably find more rot as moisture almost surely got through. Also, with that much rot, it will continue to feed on organic matter and spread. Lastly, if there is moisture to that degree, I almost always find termite damage. They are usually synonymous.

If the moisture dries out, would the termite go away?
@qmyers367
@qmyers367 Жыл бұрын
@@walden6272 not necessarily, the colony has a queen that can live for a while, they have a food source, they have soldier termites and whole colony structure etc. so they want to stay. (You can spray a vinegar and ginger solution to kill them if you want to stay away from chemicals.) But first, stop all moisture leaking into the area or wood where they feed (cellulose). Termites will continue to stay in “dry” Wood . I say “dry” because there is always a minuscule amount of moisture in it. (But the excessive Moisture from an exterior leak or pipe leak is what attracts them in the first place). When they eat this “dry” wood , The minuscule amount of moisture in wood will help them survive as they they derive moisture from their feces before it’s pooped.
@walden6272
@walden6272 Жыл бұрын
@@qmyers367 I stop the leaked. And I see damaged from termites but no live ones. I wonder if they are still there hiding somewhere. Do I have to tear down the whole wall to find them? It's only a one small area seems to get affected by the water damage. I want to make sure I get rid of those termites before I do the repairs.

I am not wanting to say this, but this is a mess. You did say you were going to remodel and I assume something is going to happen to the whole window. I guess that is why you did not worry about the globs of stuff on the trim. I have a window in both baths and never had an inside issue. Outside is another story. If you do a rebuild on that window I would use pvc products all the way. I guess this happened from lack of concern as to the water build up. You seem like a very nice lady and I cringed at the video. Keep telling my self, she said it is only temporary.

Hi, thank you so much for watching my video. I appreciate your comment. I don't have the money to do an extensive window remodel yet, but what I was able to do has worked very well for our family. There's been no more wood damage and the window looks better than it did when it was rotting. That's all I wanted to accomplish in this video. I will post a picture on my community page of how the window has held up so far. Thanks again.

@@BeThrifty2 Glad you did not take my comments as being nasty. I see where you are coming from. Now is awful time to remodel.$$$$!! When you do I would be sure to look in that wall under the window. This should not have happened to you and you need to figure out what caused it in the first place. I am not computer smart and know nothing of a community page but I am glad you explained it to me. Your reply was kind and heart felt. I am interested in your future good luck on this project.

My dad uses a product called rock hard. It’s a powder you lightly add water to make paste like consistency. You apply it with a spatula, pushing some in the hole or rotten section. Make smooth & level with surface. It will harden to a rock like hardness. It’s paintable & sandable. This is good around windows & door trim especially where water spatter has rotten the bottoms. Remember the ole school weightlifter guy with the round ball weight bar above his head, that with be on the front of the can.
