personally I think starting at lvl 1 with 0 reputation locks out a characters backstory effecting their reputation. let their backstory influence their starting reputation but just keep the bonus or negative low from whatever backstory aspects they may have. gives the player more investment in caring about their reputation from the start and lets their backstory have more influence in the game as well.

Tie such a change into their background in that case. Starting at 0 for character creation is just a baseline for the typical character.

Brillant video. My group run into " THE HATS." Half the party think they are an enemy. Half think they are neutral. Guess how they are identified? They wear hats!

Sheriffs in my setting wear black hats with broad brims. Higher up sheriffs wear plumes of various colors depending on their level. Other minor offices, such as the jailer, wear colored ribbons around their hats.

I just wanna say, thank you so much for these videos. I'm a very new DM that just ran a session 1, and your How To Videos really helped to better the experience for my players. So thank you, and I hope you and this channel succeed and continue to bring important information and bacon awareness to the new DMs out there.

At first, i wasnt on board with this mechanic because I have always mitigated rep in my worlds, but you have really fleshed out this mechanic in a way that makes massive sense and less work for a DM/GM, you won me over! Looking forward to getting this book, and will be getting on your Patreon soon!

I think I'll use it in my recently started game, but give the characters some backstory adjustments - a -1 global for the bandit for being a wanted criminal in a neighboring kingdom (but the arrest warrant hasn't made it across borders), +2 in a town for the amnesiacs family reputation she's trying to figure out, -3 with the church to the dhampire necromancer for... well... being a half-undead necromancer.

I like to openly share an overview of the party’s reputation with the players as a simple chart with factions as columns and deeds accomplished with green dots showing +1 and red dots showing -1. For example, for the local order of knights +1 for defending the town , but for the tribe of forest goblins -1 for defending the town. Players only learn which of their deeds will affect reputation after they do it. However, I will also have some marked as +1 unknown reason, or even unknown faction -1 for rescuing the lost fey. The players can speculate among themselves who the unknown faction is, or which of their deeds just impacted reputation. Tracking reputation is a great deterrent for murder hobo parties!

One addendum I would make to the system is adding a Global Awareness that only ever ticks up every time a point of Global Reputation is gained or lost; if the party did enough to gain 5 rep, and did some other things that lost them 5 rep, that would bring them back to 0 which kind of looks a lot like the kind of reputation of green adventurers that who've never really done anything of note yet in their lives. If there is a large discrepancy between the Awareness and their reputation being to one side or the other - then it would signify that the people of the world have heard of them, but the stories have been quite conflicted. The other possibility is to have a + or - streak denoted; then if they have a -4 reputation, but their streak is 3 to the positive, then maybe there might be a bit of cautious leeway that they're led a bad life but are doing something to make amends. Or if they're at positive 3, but their streak is -4, it can be that the world saw them once as paragons of virtue but they've had some major falls from grace. - this would help give a bit more weight to their most recent actions (as most people do seem to have a bias towards the most recent; "yes, but what have you done lately?")

The d20 Star Wars system already has an amazing rep mechanic. When an NPC meets you they roll an intelligence check of 25 minus your reputation. If they succeed, you gain +4 diplomacy/persuasion. If you have a "bad" reputation and are "infamous" you get a -4 on those interactions but gain a +4 on intimidation. You could also use your reputation in battle to give penalties to an enemy's attack rolls and saves if they knew who you were and had reason to be afraid.

@@tannermason4315 It's called "Star Wars Roleplaying Game Revised Core Rulebook" - came out in 2002. I ran a 10 year long campaign and my friends loved it. My favorite rule system (based mostly on the 3/3.5 D&D rules, but better)

Great idea, but as much as i love quantifying the world into some tables, i think that reputation is hardly able to be quantified but has to be watched on an individual level and may change nearly chaotically. I still like the idea for the general overview and which factors or dimensions to take into account!

I've been trying to figure out a good way to track reputation, especially since I know a couple of my players tend to do stuff that might affect their own reputation, but those things shouldn't necessarily affect the entire party. Well, at least not always - the friends you keep, right? It just made more sense to purchase your already developed system rather than reinventing the wheel. Thanks!

Good advice, though the way a sliding scale works feels a little restricted to me. What happens to the player reputation when they bounce back and forth between positive and negative reputation? If you only track their current reputation, you have a world of NPCs with exclusively short term memory. I think I would add something like Bad Blood markers. Some offenses do far more than merely shift your current reputation rating and become unforgiven grudges. Each Bad Blood token/marker you acquire makes it so you need higher and higher reputation to get what you want, because even if they like you more recently, they haven't forgotten THAT thing you did before. They like you, but they don't trust you. You may not be so bad anymore, but you're still unreliable. Then the natural thing is to let players opt in to Atonement sidequests where they can get rid of Bad Blood tokens by doing a special favor for those still harboring ill feelings

A good reputation with a group won't necessarily mean they try to help the party. A thieves guild might send assassins after a group that helps them a lot, testing to make sure the players haven't 'gone soft' and are still worthy of their reputation

@joejackson3091 Ай бұрын
I don't remember offhand, did you have "the guy who thinks his character's actions shouldn't have repercussions" as one of the worst types of D&D players? Because I've had a few of those over the years. Their characters act like complete asshats and then they're surprised when NPCs don't like them and won't just up and help them or give them stuff. I actually had one player lip off to a city councilor in the very first session because the party asked for horses and he gave them one old fence-chewing nag. These were level 1 characters who had done nothing but show up to a meeting about undead issues and they expected to be fully financed by the city council to go out and - to the council's thinking - probably just get themselves killed. One of the other characters in that same campaign lipped off to everyone to try to flex how tough he was, even referring to one of the party's greatest allies as the c-word, and then acted surprised when NPCs chose to interact with other members of the party and ignore him altogether. There doesn't have to be a mechanic. You know your players and their characters. All you have to do is decide how far word has traveled at any particular point in the campaign.
