I'm going to call it between 6 and 7 hours. I've never had it faster than that. Thanks for your feedback Dan. FYI, I'll be using the 1oz hop addition in the Gruit as you suggested earlier, and Immo pointed out in his brewday with BHBrewing. I think he used Sterling, but i'm probably going to have to go with something else, maybe Saaz. I'll have to see what's in my freezer that day. ;-) Cheers!

I know it's really hard to tell from watching my videos, but I kinda like these Blichmann gizmos and gadgets. ;-) It made a big difference for me and I like it a lot. I read some forum posts before hand they were not all great reviews, so I was really hesitant about it. But in the end, I knew it couldn't be any worse than than big screen. The PH tester is really great. I feel more sure about where my brew should be with it, although I still have yet to get my water analyzed. SOON. Cheers Kevin!

Great video, as usual!! I'm glad I saw it in your popular ones list. I also got really tired of that screen from TheElectricBrewery. Total waste of $70, I cannot understand how Kal, or anybody else, can use it. Might be user error on our side, but for me on top of getting clogged really easy on hoppy beers, the flow just stops when the level of wort is underneath it. And to make things worse, it forces the element to be higher up. The rest of the system works flawlessly, and I really love brewing with it! Cheers!

Awesome setup for a start! Im building my own HERMS system but im a bit green on a couple of things. In your HLT is the water recirculating from the bottom of the pot into the pump then out back into the top of the pot, keeping the water in the pot moving around the coil to keep the overall temp of the water more even while you are mashing? Guessing this acts as a "stirrer" to reduce stratification.... am i on the right track with this? Cheers!

I don't know about that, guess it depends on what you drive. :-) I think I was pretty frugal putting it all together - tried to be. Yeah the kettles look nice and are not cheap, but neither is the work that has to go into a lesser expensive kettle to have all the ports and functions this one already has. From the choices I had, these were very competitive in pricing. Thanks and Cheers!

great video. Just moving from gas/propane to an electric HERMS system. Just seems so much more energy efficient. No running out of gas.
@TonyYates
@TonyYates 10 жыл бұрын
Thanks Jerry! I never did propane route so I wouldn't know, but I remember when researching it, all the discussions about electric vs. gas efficiency was hands down better with electric - so much wasted heat escaping with gas. Only thing I would about is power outages, haha... So, although it's not a common problem, there is the rare outage on particularly stormy days. So I never brew during a storm. Seems kinda logical anyway. :-) Cheers!

Hey Tony! - Great video! It's been hard to find a good video demonstration of a Blichmann homebrew setup but you've nailed it. I'm in the process of building my own, I was wondering one thing though; when you pump the wort from the mash tun into the boil kettle, how do you avoid pumping in any grain? Is the grain cake sat below the tap or do you have some sort of filter?
@TonyYates
@TonyYates 9 жыл бұрын
Tristan Fisher Hi Tristan, I use the Blichmann false botton and that works great for filtering out grain husks. Because I'm constantly recirculating the mash, the grains set really nicely and as long I don't disturb the grains in the last 20 minutes for the mash, than it's all running clear when I put it over into the boil kettle. Before switching the hoses over at mash out, I turn off the mash outlet value just long enough to change the tubing configuration over to the boil kettle, then commence fly sparging with a slow fill rate. I use about 45 minutes to fill the boil kettle for 5 gallons, 60-75 minutes for 10 gallons. I think I might be more detailed in this video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/p5x6nMSByLjRhoU.html Cheers!

Okay I think I'm seeing the purpose of the whirlpool its to not have a heating element directly under the grain? I'm assuming they may scorch?
@TonyYates
@TonyYates 10 жыл бұрын
The purpose of the whirlpool at the end of the boil is to get the best hop oil extraction. There has never been a problem with the element scorching the beer or other ingredients. I chose electric because of my environment - desire not to brew in the snow in winter, keep it in doors, not worry about gases, refilling propane tanks, etc). 100% of the heat produced is utilized resulting in faster heat up times and more efficiency. Best regards.

Nice setup! A technical question: how long does it take to raise sparge water to specific temp for example 64 oC? And how You control the presure in pumps for not overfilling wort tank? by hand(water flow control) or other way ?
@TonyYates
@TonyYates 9 жыл бұрын
Depends on the time of year, source water temps... But I have experienced 14 gallons going from 10C to 65C in about 35-45 minutes. www.theelectricbrewery.com/FAQ#How_long_does_it_take_to_heat_with_electricity_ I control all pressures via ball valves. I manually monitor the flows via sight glasses, so I see what the volumes are at all times. I have a few complete brew day videos that show my complete process, they normally have "brewday" in the title. I hope this helps. Cheers!
@Coleburgess09

Okay I may post more questions as I'm watching the video. But I'm currently in the propane stage and looking to go electric. Why do you prefer this method over the bib method? And what's the purpose of recirculation?
@TonyYates
@TonyYates 10 жыл бұрын
I chose this setup over other techniques, such as BIAB, because of claimed better extraction by others who have done it both ways (homebrewtalk) and more control and stability over temp control. It's the closest a small scale Homebrew rig gets to a production brew setup. I've recently seen a BIAB RIMS setup, I think blichmann is building it, and that could be an alternative for folks with less space. I don't claim one way to be better than the other, I don't have any experience doing it differently, so it boils down to personal choice.

@TonyYates 8 жыл бұрын
+ericmillerlite Right, around time 13:55, when I start to fill up the boil kettle is when the sparge water is at mash out temps and I start to sparge. Sorry I didn't show it here, but I do in my later brew day footage - I know it does in my latest one, the Paul Wicksteed Tribute brewday. It only takes about 1.3 minute per degree raise. Cheers!
@Coleburgess09
@Coleburgess09 10 жыл бұрын
I meant the whirl pooling while mashing. Like why wouldn't you just have the 2 pots and mash in one instead of keeping the grains in one and recirculating the hot water through the hlt is it to not Scorch the grain?
@TonyYates
@TonyYates 10 жыл бұрын
Oh ok, now I understand what you meant. The recirculating of wort is for two reasons: maintain mashing temperature and continuous sparge. The is zero chance of scorching the wort during then mash because there is no element in the Mashtun, only the HLT and boil kettle. The HLT water maintains a constant mash temp during the mash, while the wort pumping through the coil in the HLT ensures that the mash wort always maintains the correct mash temperature. I have a more thorough brew day footage and explanation here: Homebrew Wednesday 1-1-2014 - SMaSHing in the New Year - Electric Brewery Brewday, SMaSHing in the New Year video. I hope this helps. Great questions!

Hi Tony , i`m putting together a system and ordered a bunch of camlocks & hose for my kettles . On my F camlocks they came with some "dust plugs " but I have no idea how they are supposed to connect with each other ? Do you have these , and if so, are they just wired together or how are they connected ? Thanks !
@TonyYates
@TonyYates 10 жыл бұрын
Hi, I'm looking at my type F quick disconnect and the "dust plug", AKA Type DC fitting. I see that the DC fitting has the same side levers that the B, C, and D fittings have. So for me, it's just to slip the DC fitting over the F fitting and pull the levers back. Does your DC fitting not have the sealing levers?
@slinkers111

Tony Yates Are they quick connects or cam locks ? I have cam locks , and the dust cap only has a tang at the end of the cap with a hole in it , there are no other parts to it , no levers or anything .

***** As seen in the video, I too have cam lock fittings. Here is an image of the the dust cap (DC) fittings I have. The only reason not to the use the plastic cups. Tastes better using glass. Also, I have read a lot of negative complaints on the blichman hop blocker using pellet hops. How has yours worked out?
@TonyYates
@TonyYates 9 жыл бұрын
jcbarnhart77 It's been a good long while now and I'm happy with the hop blocker. It's not a perfect solution, haven't seen that yet, but it's good and works well enough for my needs. As seen in my latest brew day videos, I use a strainer to capture any hop debris that get's through the hop blocker before going into the fermenter. The strainer also helps to aerate the wort too. Cheers!

hi tony i have been watching a lot of your videos and learning a lot as i build my brewery in my basement. the electric control box. where you put your holes on the kettle ect ect. you have had great advice and thank you for all the videos you put up. but this video i had a question that i am not to sure about and its about the blichman hop stopper. i went on there site and looked at the hop stopper and saw that there holes are a lot lager then the screen you have been using. and it makes me question you on that choice. how much sediment is actually making past it and getting into the fermenter. I'm not questioning you knowledge but i just don't get it. i don't use blichman products cause they are very expensive so i settled for some jarhill 15 gallon pots i found on ebay. I'm not to happy with it but maybe blichman will send me some of theres for free. long shot but its nice to dream. let me know either way i am interested in knowing

Great question. I have yet to find the perfect solution but this one has been the best so far. When I whirlpool (seen in my most recent brewing videos) the holes initially let some hops through , but quickly compound around the holes to act as a filter too. I'm quite satisfied with it. Cheers!

+Mark Milano Hi Mark, while I wish I could give you a quick answer I have to say that everyone's equipment profile is different, as are the volumes due to those equipment differences. Very rarely with two different systems deliver the same efficiency with matching volumes, and that's why there are well-defined formulas and so many calculators out there to help with these differences. If you define your equipment profile in brewtoad, and define your desired batch volume (5 or 6 gallons), brewtoads brew steps will give you the volumes for strike, and temp to meet your mash temp, as well as sparse volumes. There is also Brewgr.com, brewersfriend.com, and of course apps like BeerSmith and Pro Mash. Hope this helps, cheers!

Oh man! I am new to brewtoad and did not even notice the equipment profile section. All my answers were there the whole time. Thank you for all your help!!!

Oh, and I forgot to mention: That's a darned good looking setup! I've always wanted a couple of those BoilerMakers, but with my current economy, I'm stuck with 16 gallon plastic fermenters that's build actually quite close to your setup :)

I will, once I get a couple more brews done on it and feel confident that everything will go "as planned". Don't want to upload a video where it looks like I've never tried the setup before.

+Tony Yates . I have a question: Can you add the grains in the MLT, and then add the strike water from the bottom? I seem to recall reading somewhere that that would prevent dough balls.
