Homefront: The Revolution is a sequel (or possibly reboot) to the epic story of how North Korea defeated and occupied America. And that's not the only odd thing here...

The first game (just like the Red Dawn remake) was originally going to involve China attacking the US, but they wanted to be able to actually sell copies in China, so they changed it to N.K. Given how NEITHER of the two backstories they gave made that scenario likely at all, they might have been better off making up a fictional country called "North Borea" or something.

They traded in one ridiculous backstory for another. Why in the hell would the US buy weapons from North Korea? Why in the hell would North Korea sell the US weapons? Yeah, backdoor blah blah blah. This makes zero sense and they should have just let everyone forget about Homefront. Great video True.

> They traded in one ridiculous backstory for another. Why in the hell would the US buy weapons from North Korea? Why in the hell would North Korea sell the US weapons? You could fig-leaf it. After the end of the Korean War, by initial appearances it was the North that was doing better than the South, thanks in large part to extremely generous subsidies from the Soviet Union. The country progressively turned into the mess it's in today because of extremely poor leadership (obviously) and because with the demise of the Soviet Union those subsidies ended. The suggestion at the start of the video was that North Korea developed a thriving electronics industry beginning in the 1970s, taking on the role of both modern-day Silicon Valley and the (South) Korean electronic giants. That's plausible-ish if you don't think about it too hard (namely, where were the Soviets in all this?) Of course, is is still a gamified version of Red Dawn. The _implication_ is that America is weakening itself by buying everything from actual-real-life China, and that the nation's stature is only permitted at the suffrance of international financiers. America will only be Great Again with true, grimdark guns and grit, with no room for modern liberal mamby-pambyisms.

Because North Korea is US entertainment code for China? And by that I mean films and games companies want to sell in China. Pissing them off by making them the enemy is not a good sales move, so we get 'North Korea'.

"North Korea is US entertainment code for China?" But if that's true, why didn't they use a code country for America? They make the Americans look just as bad if not worse than the North Koreans and surely they want to sell in America.

M W Considering the Imperialist Japanese Army committed atrocities that horrified the S.S., I'm pretty sure we can be as racist and discriminatory as we want against those involved in those atrocities. And he's not wrong. If we hadn't attacked them with nuclear weapons then Russia would've invaded and brutally killed them or America and Russia would've invaded until there were more casualties than if we'd dropped 5 nukes.

Actually Jon, that's sort of how guns work. It's not 100% accurate but it's not totally out there bonkers either. Really converting a handgun to a submachine gun equates to putting an auto sear in it and putting it in a pistol carbine kit. Incredibly similar to what they did, just a little slower.

True, but then again those North Koreans clearly knew you were members of the resistance, whereas the resistance beat you up and were in the process of torturing an apparent civilian based on the fact that you could possibly have been a spy. The Koreans were slightly more justified in their actions imo, despite them being dicks.

I think this is true for games like CoD, but this game is not one where America is the invader (unlike in real life). Violent resistance against a foreign occupying military is justified, but they wouldn't be able to sell the game of they had you playing as Iraqis defending their homes from American invasion. I actually think it's a great critique of American imperialism in a roundabout way

one thing i have to say is. the British military ESPECIALLY the SAS and the SBS are pretty brutal as well and play things their way. but they're such silent professionals that many people don't know about it besides military people who work with them. as someone who has a lot of SOF friends i've heard stories!
@dominateeye
@dominateeye 8 жыл бұрын
Okay, in regards to the story, it's a lot more plausible than that of the original Homefront. Majromax down there already explained how it could theoretically have happened, so it's good enough for me on the basics. I like a good rebellion-against-oppressive-government game so I kind of wanted to like this, but you're right, the Resistance are too jerkish to be able to be rooted for. I'm not saying they shouldn't be cautious, but automatically assaulting and torturing everyone who enters their tunnels is overkill, and frankly torture is unethical and doesn't make them look good either-- there are other, ethical ways of interrogation that rely on emotion and empathy that get better results, already in use by the US government today (though not to say the US government doesn't unethically torture people because they do and it needs to stop). And yes, Jon, there are guns out there that are modular already, and this is the future, so it's not unimaginable that you could have fully-modular weapons like the game depicts. Frankly, I don't know why the Resistance is trying to revive the USA, with all the baggage the name has. Sure, there's good parts, but there's stuff that is just unethical and inexcusable too. Why not just start a new government? Coordinate an ambush on a KPA patrol, steal their weapons and armor, modify them, clear out an area, set up a border and be public about it, for Christ's sake. You'll find there's a lot less secrecy and damp tunnels that way. Since this is an FPS, it'd probably be a lot more fun, too.
@dominateeye
@dominateeye 8 жыл бұрын
I've now made it through the entire video, and aside from that one point where the marker clearly had an arrow on it, I think Jon's dislike of this game is entirely fair. I would have much rather preferred to see the game transform from boring nationalistic oblivious shooter into actual revolution simulator by performing military operations for the actual betterment of the civilians in the area and restoring civil liberties and having it all actually have an obvious effect on the game world. That would have been interesting, and seeing the militaristic characters that had been introduced up to that point being exposed as "shoot first talk later" idiots would have delivered a message that we really kinda need right now, especially considering the two kinds of poison that the two main parties have put forward this election.

This story makes even less sense to me. 1) we would never use their tech in all of our military equipment and 2) in the first game I thought it was a military alliance led by a mysteriously technologically advanced North Korea which means they had a technology advantage and could draw upon troops that weren't initially Korean. I mean yeah it ended up being us vs "the Asians" but at least that makes more sense than us supplying our army solely with North Korean tech for years and never noticing the backdoor
@feetmusk
@feetmusk 8 жыл бұрын
I like how Jon says the North Koreans don't torture and kill their prisoners while 2 of the 3 prisoners in the interrogation in the beginning died. If you were part of a Resistance, you would have to be especially careful who you let in. Also, you say you would rather join the NKs, but they likely attacked the UK as they are allies of the US.
@feetmusk
@feetmusk 8 жыл бұрын
Also you aren't really terrorists because NK is occupying the US. It isn't the original government. It would be a different story if the Resistance fought against the US government.

I love this game because there are very few games that allow you to play as an occupied population against foreign invasion. A game where you play as Iraqis killing American troops to defend their homes from imperialist occupation would never be allowed to be published, so imo this is the next best thing. It comes across on the surface as a "rah rah go America" game, but I think it's actually a great critique of American imperialism where Korea is the globe-spanning superpower invading countries to "help" them. Also the gameplay is fun and I love the "Yellow Zone" vs "Red Zone" dynamic

Hmmm, I've never played a Homefront game, but it seems to me like the message of the game was that we (First World Western civilization) would do the same things as the terrorists if our situations were reversed. I imagine that much should have become clear the moment the resistance decided to hide their weapons in their own clinics. They could have named the game Homefront 2: London Boogaloo featuring a UK overrun by the technologically advanced hordes of Neo Malta and the basic story beats would have remained unchanged. I feel like Jon is -OH, SCREW YOU, JOHN! I JUST LOOKED UP THE DEVELOPERS AND THEIR BASED IN NOTTINGHAM, YAH DAMNED FOG HORN, THE "LEAD NARRATIVE DESIGNER" (psh!) WENT TO UNIVERSITY OF SUSSEX AND DEEP SILVER IS BASED OUT OF GERMANY! AMERICAN EXCEPTIONALISM MY YANKEE ASS! GOOD DAY TO YOU, SIR! *sigh* I miss G.I. Joe... and non-murderous Optimus Prime

I really don't want to defend a game like this, but yes, if you shoot a helmet made of very good material with a dinky pistol, it won't kill.

2 years late...but whatever, I'll say it anyways. The key to a good alternate universe is it's connection with our own. I don't get what this has to do with our own universe (thus, the shock or interest is immediately diminished). Their prologue/backstory bit up front makes no sense and has no connection to what we know today. There wasn't a turning point to diverge these realities apart from "Hey, NK made tech in the 1970's and...well that's it". That's it! the catalyst! That made up, totally historically inaccurate and downright fantastical change that facilitates all this other magical backstory that defies logic and reason was all that was needed!
