Great video and lots of good details in here. The difference between a hub and a bridge is always something people new to HomeKit struggle with and it’s important to get this right. Great job JR!

Good video Jon. My one Apple TV in a 6000 sq house has suffice thus far, until I recently got the Bluetooth door lock. I was thinking of getting a second Apple TV to help but it won’t since it’s just a standby hub. I might have to get a primary HomePod so I can put it in centralized location.

Great video, John! So I had a question- I currently use my Apple TV (4th Gen) as my HomeKit Hub. However, I wish to migrate to Apple TV 5th Gen. How do I migrate the HomeKit Hub from the ATV 4th Gen to ATV 5th Gen without any issues to my connect smart devices. Thanks

The audio on this is difficult to hear. On my tablet it clips, and the tonal range is highly compressed.

Poor audio plus you missed a key statement of why we have a Bridge to convert radio/infrared signal devices like Philips Hue light bulbs to the HomeKit Hub. The Bridge act as a converter (bridges) between analogue devices to IP WiFi device like HomePod. Apart from that some good information for beginners. Remember a Bridge converters and Hub links devices of the same technology i.e. IP WiFi equipment together and is the central control.

RODkITS43 you are wrong. Hubs in the main enabled devices that connect to the bridge to work with HomeKit. It has nothing todo with converting analog signals, no idea what the f**k you are talking about on that point

Hey! I had a quick question for you. Since my home is quite large, around 5000 SF, how do I control the Ikea smart lights from a distance? (I have a few Ikea gateways to cover the whole house for all the different rooms) because once I leave a particular room, the lights in that room show up as unresponsive on my home kit. Will it work if I set up a few HomePod minis in every room as a home kit hub? or what would you recommend should be done?

Looking at maybe ordering a Apple TV 4K to join the homekit eco system. I've got an iPad 4, which I believe is too old sat in a draw, but that stays at home as I have an iPad 2021 Pro. Essentially is the iPad 4 too old and secondly, regarding positioning, if I have multiple Apple 4K TVs, would the devices connect to the best positioned device? I'm running Unfi mesh wireless and pfsense firewall with IOT devices isolated. Ring, Hue, kitchen appliances, alexa, google protect, 6 sonos devices and various other items. The apple devices would be moved into this LAN segment.

What about the scenario where my smart device is Bluetooth and it’s closer to the standby Apple TV. Can I pair the device to the standby hub and will two hubs work cooperatively?

Hi. I have set my iPad as a hub. Always stays at home. I’ve set an automation to trigger my Hive heating when myself and my wife leave the house but iPad keeps appearing in the “When people leave” section and as it never leaves, it never triggers! I untick the iPad option but it keeps ticking itself again!?! Is it as I have iPad set to share its location? Should I turn this off? Thank you!! 👍🏻

That depends on a number of factors. Apple needs to do some changes in the framework. It would be nice to have one device for HomeKit.

Can you cause confusion by having more than 1 AppleTV as a hub? Will AppleTV hub play nice with Google, Samsung, FEIT, Phillips, or other hubs?

Hello, Great video. I am new to apple home kit. We have an apple tv gen3 and 2 iPads. I have setup Apple TV as a hub and my iPad (for now) as the main home kit controller . I just purchased a Caseta smart bridge bridge pro 2 and will set it up today. My question is, if I take both iPad’s away from the house will I be able to control and automate remotely? What do I need to do in the setup for this to work? Thanks in advance.

Wow thanks for the quick reply. My mistake I have gen 4 model A1625. The issue I’m having now is that I setup the smart bridge pro2 and labels all my lights in the Lutron app. When I connected SB to the Apple TV on my iPad it didn’t import the labels I created. Is this normal?

I don’t follow what your saying. Are you saying that apple home kit software should have imported the reassigned light switch names from SB? Oh I think you meant to say “It should have imported them” I’ll restart everything and try again. Thanks

I like your videos Thanks. I have my bedroom setup with a HomePod and 3 different home kit lights. I speak to Siri to turn lights on and off. Everything works great. However, sometimes on occasion when I ask Siri to turn the lights on or off it will respond saying something is wrong and recommends I go into Settings and fix the issue because not all devices are responding. Well, I don't change anything because I know it is setup correctly. Maybe 10 minutes later I ask Siri to turn the lights on or off and it works ! Why I didn't change anything. Any ideas as to what is going on ? Thanks

iPad does not have to be connected to a charger to work as a Homekit hub. I use it daily and leave it it living room so it is in range of Homekit devices. I just charge it reguralry and use it as a normal iPad.
@HomeKitAuthority
@HomeKitAuthority 4 жыл бұрын
Missing the point. The point I am making is that people might “forget” to charge it. Plus if this is a main iPad then taking it out of the home. Renders home automations useless
@Fleesek
@Fleesek 4 жыл бұрын
HomeKit Authority I use it mine as a main iPad, but it always stays home so it works great as a Homekit Hub. Then when I am going away, nobody’s home so I do not need Homekit automations etc.

I am glad it works for you, every case is different. Although I still use automations when no one is home to simulate people at home or using the location feature to trigger devices such as my drive lights when I am arriving home. But glad it works for you

Update. I deleated the Smart Bridge Pro (SBpro) from Apple HomeKit. Restarted Apple TV, SBpro and iPad. Added SBpro and same results. It didn’t import the light switches I already named in the Lutron app. So I’m just going to manually rename them in Apple HomeKit. Weird
